To want to fall down the stairs to get time off work?

Hi all,
I am in a stressful job, and some of you may remember from previous posts that I have anxiety, and I have annual time off work that I can’t change and it’s only every few months, and I can’t take time off work outside of these scheduled hiatuses unless I have a bereavement or I physically can’t work. There is (outing) reasons why I have to work there, so I can’t just piss off to another job if I feel like it. I want to fall down a flight of stairs so I physically can’t work so I can have time to convalesce and can do something about my anxiety and chronic pain. AIBU?

If you feel like that go to your gp and explain. You could get signed off and that way your bones won't have to heal you can just concentrate on your mental wellbeing.

Flowers it sounds tough.

gearandloathing · 12/08/2019 16:17

Cant you just pretend you tripped overin the shower and banged your head or something?

MaintainTheMolehill · 12/08/2019 16:21

First of all don't try to fall down the stairs. You could bang your head or break your neck and die.
I remember feeling like this and it took everything I had not to walk into the road on the way to work so I would be knocked down and wouldn't have to go.
This isn't living so whatever the reason is that's keeping you there and making you consider risking your life, it's not worth it.
I don't know your reasons but can't you get signed off with anxiety and stress? Long term you know you have to do something about this situation.

DonnaDarko · 12/08/2019 16:23

It sounds like you need to get signed off from stress, go to the doctor and just explain how you feel!

Vasya · 12/08/2019 16:26

You don't need to fall down the stairs OP - you are already in need of sick leave for your stress and anxiety.

Go and get signed off for a couple of weeks, then see how you feel after that.

Your illness is not any less legitimate just because it's mental rather than physical Thanks

If you’re considering throwing yourself down the stairs, I’d say you’re already not fit enough to work.

DisappearingGirl · 12/08/2019 16:28

Yes please go and tell exactly that to your GP. Please don't actually do it!! Flowers

Byorderofthepeakyblinders · 12/08/2019 16:29

I agree, visit your GP and you may well get signed off due to your real issues of anxiety

Likethebattle · 12/08/2019 16:39

I understand and wondered why my bloody appendix couldn’t be one of the ones to need taken out. I actually did fall down the stairs several weeks ago but was uninjured so just soldiered on and i’m not in that situation anymore so was happy enough to go to work.

dottiedodah · 12/08/2019 16:41

As others have said ,Speak to your Doctor and see if you can get some time off due to stress .DO NOT throw yourself down the stairs under any circumstances !.

dollydaydream114 · 12/08/2019 16:45

You need to see your GP.

I have been in a very similar situation to you and you definitely need some help. If you need time off work for your mental health, your GP can sign you off just as they would if you were physically ill - and in fact, you are physically ill anyway, as you have a chronic pain condition.

sackrifice · 12/08/2019 16:47

I fell down the stairs, was off work for 4 months and have never really recovered. Please don't.

But do go and get yourself signed off with stress, and tell the doctor that you contemplated chucking yourself down the stairs, that's how bad it is.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 12/08/2019 16:51

I can relate OP, I spent a few weeks fantasising about being hit by a bus, just so I could get a break.
Go to your doctor, tell them, take the help offered. It will get better, but you've got to make the first step.
Good luck

Jayaywhynot · 12/08/2019 17:02

Dont do it! I recently had a serious fall, opened a whole can of worms healthwise. However, if you want to pretend you've fallen I can give you a list of symptoms that will be very convincing Grin seriously tho, take time off, sounds like you need it Flowers

burntpinky · 12/08/2019 17:06

I felt exactly like this a few years ago - wanted to fall down stairs and also seriously contemplated driving car into a wall, just so I didn’t have to go to work.

In the end I quit and am much much happier and now don’t have those thoughts ever.

If you can’t quit please please get signed off with stress to take some time for yourself and work out a way out. I guarantee your employer gives no shits about you, so you have to look after yourself. Life is too short and you need to live it. Good luck xx

beachysandy81 · 12/08/2019 17:27

If it's that bad get signed off for stress. The fact that you would contemplate harming yourself is reason enough. Chronic pain is not going to get better by falling down stairs. Sorry you are feeling so down.

Noseynails · 12/08/2019 17:41

Thanks all, it’s not that I’m down, or actually would throw myself down a flight of stairs, it would just be quite ideal to have time off work to do as I please.
