AIBU to ask you to walk rescue dogs

Following recent threads about how difficult it is to give a home to a rescue animal, AIBU to ask anyone with spare time to volunteer at their local rescue centre? Just to make these animals' lives more bearable while they await a home.
I walk the dogs or play ball with them in the play area. They are so grateful, and of course gives me plenty of exercise!

Do they let you take kids? My 8 year old would be out of her mind with happiness if we did this.

Wolfiefan · 11/08/2019 17:41

Or volunteer for the Cinnamon Trust. Keep people who can’t walk their dogs with their beloved pets.
Or cat cuddle. Yes it’s a thing! Getting kittens used to people and grooming and socialising cats in rescue.
So rewarding. YANBU!!

Dd tried every rescue near us last year and none would have her as she's under 18.
She's 18 later this month and going to college on the first step towards being a Vet nurse and will try to volunteer again.
She adores animals and will do anything to make them happy.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/08/2019 17:48

She doesn't expect to play with dogs all day, if they set her to work cleaning up poo, she'd do it without complaint.

Bookworm4 · 11/08/2019 17:55

Please look locally as there are lots of rescues other than RSPCA and Dogs Trust.

Pipandmum · 11/08/2019 17:56

My daughter and her friends have tried to volunteer at local cat rescue and they were told they had a long list of volunteers already!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2019 18:14

I'll have a look at this because I love going for walks so could easily take a dog with me.

I already foster rescue cats and kittens and that is just the best thing ever. I currently have a 3 month old kitten purring on my lap and I love her so much.

People always say 'don't you want to keep them all' well yes I do but it's great when they go to their forever homes and also then we get more kittens.

Thanks for posting this.

Barbara I have plans to convert the bedroom of the first child who moves out into a foster room. Blush
Our local rescue allows them from 14 if an adult is with them. DS and I started off when he started D of E.

Whattodoinleeds · 11/08/2019 18:28

There’s an older couple across the road and up a bit from me and I wish I had the balls to knock their door and ask if I could walk their dog sometimes. I imagine the breed would be happy with as many walks as she could get but there’s probably issues with if anything happened to her while I had her.

Wolfie our spare room is a kitten nursery. When the little ones or nursing mothers come to us they are confined to that room and it is their space.

Depending on how long they stay with us they get supervised or unsupervised run of the house and then supervised or unsupervised access to outside. It's a bit slow for rehoming now because people are going on summer holidays. Also still have glut due to peak kitten season earlier in the year.

The ones we have now are up to supervised outside access as we live in a very quiet area for roads but they are being a bit slow to work out how to get in the cat flap despite being able to get out fine Hmm. So I feel I have to make them come in at night and when we go to work because foxes etc. Here is my little lap warmer.

Oh my. That face! Our kittens were in foster with rescue. They arrived so full of confidence and settled instantly. They had such a good start with their amazing fosterer. Would be amazing to do the same for other cats.

onemorecakeplease · 11/08/2019 18:42

whattodoinleeds you should!! They would probably love it

I used to walk my neighbours dog when I was a kid and loved it

I have two rescue dogs now so I haven't much time to walk any more but it sounds like a fab way to spend the day! I am not sure the sspca where I live would let you but I'll find out!

Meadowland · 11/08/2019 18:58

@Wolfiefan. The reason I volunteer at rescue rather than Cinammon Trust, is that I feel the need is much greater. Rescue dogs have nobody, and long for human company. Often they are there as their owners have separated, or died, or just can't afford them any more. The poor things are so bewildered and sad.
I cannot tell you how happy they are when they see me and realise they are going to escape their cell for a while.
Sadly we need lots more walkers and often I have to choose who to walk which is heart breaking for the ones left.
@Ihavebrillohair Please don't give up trying.
If you love exercise and love animals, it's a win win .

Thank you for posting this, what a good idea. I looked after a friend's dog last year and loved walking her. Have two rescue cats who wouldn't take to a dog but this could be the answer for me. Missing my lovely walks, checking out all the sticks and squirrels locally!

Wolfiefan · 11/08/2019 19:19

I’ve done both and both are rewarding. Keeping an elderly lady with her beloved terrier and stopping him ending up in rescue.
Sooooo many animals in rescue though. Sad

Meadowland · 12/08/2019 14:17

If any of you do end up volunteering, I would love to hear how you get on !
Over the last year it has given me a great new dimension to my life, and I don't need the gym any more !
