To have told these tourists to leave the swans and ducks along

Prob going to be accused of being racist but here goes
Am currently on holiday in the Lake District in Bowness. As anyone who has been to Bowness knows it attracts lots of Japanese tourists which is obviously great for the area.

Was sat down on a bench feeding the ducks and swans with my sun and about 20 Japanese people walked up and started to try and grab at the ducks and swans to get a picture with them. The last straw was when a swan wandered up with 5 cygnets and one Japanese women grabs a cygnet, and picks it up for a photo. The swan started to give chase and she leaps up on a wall where the swan can’t get to her
I marched up and said in a stern voice “put that cygnet down” the poor cygnet by this time was in a right state.

She looks at me and was going to ignore me till me husband came up behind me and said to her again “put the cygnet down”. She then did. A couple of people watching clap
Her husband/partner came up to us and started shouting at us in Japanese. I just looked at him and said “the swans and ducks are to be looked at not touched it is cruel”
They all then storm off in their group towards the boats.

As we walked past the boat office 5 minutes later they are pointing at us and gesturing at us to one of the boat ticket staff. He comes over and we told him what happened and he said “it’s always happening, a duck was left lame when when a Japanese lady picked one up and then basically chucked it down once a photo has been taken.
I just want to say I know Britain people can also be dicks when it comes to animals but surley something needs to be done to let the toursts know it’s not acceptable to pick up the ducks/ swans/ geese if it keeps happening.

So yeah I can quite and will confidently say this group were not Japanese

And yet OP's Dad recognised the language and as he was there and you were not, I think we can safely say they were Japanese. Maybe in the main Japanese people do not usually act like this but as I and others have said ALL Japanese people are NOT the same.

Anyway regardless of what nationality they were, they were out of order and the council needs to do something and fast!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 12/08/2019 10:50

I’ve seen Japanese girls try to catch the birds in St James’ Park. They were Japanese unquestionably. They were wearing kimonos and fully made up, taking photos of themselves amongst the blossom trees (another Japanese tradition). They also chased after the birds and one of the men stepped over one of the fences to the lake trying to grab various waterfowl. A policeman stopped him before my DH intervened.

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 12/08/2019 11:03

Oh dear BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou I'm sure Ginmel will try and tell you they couldn't possibly be Japanese and that you are being incredibly racist 😂

OpheliaTodd · 12/08/2019 11:07

@CookPassBabtridge and this person is still your friend?? 😡

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 12/08/2019 11:11

You would like to think that, as a nation of supposed animal lovers, you wouldn't see any Brits treating wildlife badly either, and yet the people in my example were British. I often see obviously British children being allowed to chase pigeons as well. It is clearly ludicrous to say that no people of any nation would dream of behaving in this way because I am sure there are always outliers and exceptions to the general rule.

The point is, the OP was completely correct to challenge this particular person, and would still have been correct whatever nationality they were.

rodentforce · 12/08/2019 11:13

DEFINITELY not being unreasonable - very well done you ❤️

But the ethnicity of the culprits was not relevant. Plenty of British arseholes around. Plenty of gentle and respectful Japanese people too.

No I haven't seen her since Uni so about 12 years!

Want2727 · 12/08/2019 12:42

Please read the thread- my dad worked out in japan many years ago and recognised the language
Ginmel if anyone is being ignorant it’s you
I have said that there are dicks in all races including my own (lots) but you can seem to imagine for one minute that this might have happened!!!!.

OP posts:
Want2727 · 12/08/2019 12:45

I should not have mentioned the race I just should have said foreign tourists which would have become clear when I mentioned the langauge issues. So my apologies there. I would not have mentioned it at all if I had not been 100% certain

Ooh I saw a similar Facebook video on this where a woman just randomly grabs a pigeon and puts it into a bag. Let me see if I can find it .....

flumpybear · 12/08/2019 12:55

A lot of other countries have no respect for animals (amongst other things) - we're very pro-animals in the U.K. (which is a good thing) ... well done for standing g up to them

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 12/08/2019 13:06

Oh no I missed Ginmels post. What delights did I miss?

Sagradafamiliar · 12/08/2019 13:18

That video is actually disturbing:( obviously a cultural difference but it seems such an alien thing to do.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 12/08/2019 13:39

flumpybear sadly, the fact that the RSPCA needs to exist rather tarnishes our reputation as a pro-animal nation. I think we talk the talk very well but a lot of people seem to think that they only need to be nice to the cute animals and it's ok to persecute the ones that are less appealing. I've seen people trying to kick pigeons and seagulls. And we're hardly short of animal neglect cases involving bone-thin donkeys and flea-ridden dogs.

Pinkout · 12/08/2019 13:41

We were there last week and witnessed the same thing. One little boy was prodding a swan with a stick, I was waiting for the swan to flip on him and hurt him tbh.

Mia1415 · 12/08/2019 13:46

YANBU I told some kids off (in front of their parents) for chasing geese with swords at Warwick Castle last week. They just glared at me, but did stop.

A lady that was walking behind me told me that she'd witnesses a child hitting a duck with his sword earlier that day.

I can't stand animal cruelty.

OpheliaTodd · 12/08/2019 14:26

What the FUCK was going on in that video?! Please tell me that that utter bitch didn’t get away with it?

hashtagthathappened · 12/08/2019 14:50

This thread is racist. It was designed to be racist.

mbosnz · 12/08/2019 14:56

I think, as with many people these days, some people (of all cultures) will go to great lengths, and do some silly things, to get a good photo. Often this is born out of ignorance not malice.

In NZ, we have a lot of both Japanese and Chinese Tourists. I studied Japanese language as well as cultural studies at tertiary level, and had a lot of Japanese friends, so I'm fairly able to discern between Japanese and Chinese people.

We had a bit of a similar problem over there with things like penguins, and seals. And yes, with Japanese, with Chinese, and also with bloody Moronic Kiwi born and bred who should have known better.

sheshootssheimplores · 12/08/2019 15:14

Actually that was t even a pigeon was it? It was a sparrow or something? Does make you wonder what the plan was? I can’t imagine you’d want to cook a sparrow? I know there were lots of reports years ago of people eating swans. Haven’t heard that for awhile though.

Want2727 · 12/08/2019 15:38

In what way hashtag? Please explain.

Aberhonddu

Shout out to OrangeJellySpread for the comment at 15:48:59
For possibly the most fucking racist comment I've ever seen on here.
You may have just as well said they all look the same, Japanese and Chinese have different appearances so do Koreans, it's really easy all you have to do is look at their individual faces.

Right ms angry Aberhonddu here. Can you explain why me and my sister are often confused for Chinese/Japanese/korean then? Some of us do look alike you know!

sheshootssheimplores · 13/08/2019 10:53

I thought it was a known joke that we think all people from one area of the world look the same and they in turn think we all look the same.

SerenDippitty · 13/08/2019 11:11

The only time I've seen an unexpected round of applause between some strangers is when the plane lands. That always baffles me 😳

Especially in poor weather conditions when the pilot must use the autopilot anyway!

Op, well done.
