To ask about merlin passes?

Would I be unreasonable to commit myself to paying a monthly merlin pass membership payment for 12 months. I probably have better things to spend money on, and although I can make the payments, can’t really afford it.
But just seen they now do monthly memberships instead of annual payments.
I live in London. Usually do the theme parks once a year anyway with free tickets from sun newspaper.
Is it worth it?

If you could easily afford it and would use them then sounds good.
But given you've said it would be a stretch and you normally get them reduced anyway, seems a bit pointless surely?

RubbingHimSourly · 10/08/2019 10:35

Definitely if you live in London. We buy them solely for our yearly visit, they're amazing value really.

Vgbeat · 10/08/2019 10:38

I have them and pay 35 a month for the three of us for premium passes. If you can afford them they are great as you always have a day out with little cost. If you are in London you are lucky as you have the London attractions as well as Thorpe, Chessington and Legoland. Just be aware though you can't use standard passes in London during August and bank holidays and can't be used at them parks Fri-sunday which is one of the reasons we have the premium

Oblomov19 · 10/08/2019 10:49

I wouldn't. I'd buy one outright or use Tesco vouchers. We've had merlin passes for years by Tesco vouchers, but that's because my two went to Thorpe park at least weekly, often 2 or 3 times a week, for many many weeks in the year, with all their school mates, so for us we certainly got value for money.

Imustbemad00 · 10/08/2019 11:03

I wouldn’t mind not being able to visit the London attractions in August. I don’t rate them much anyway and can imagine they’d be hell on Earth in the summer holidays.
I’ve also got 2 children, 6 and 14. Don’t know if it’s be worth it for the 14 year old as they rarely want to come out with us these days.
It’d take me years to save up enough tesco vouchers. I don’t spend enough.
I’m just weighing up how much we’d actually visit Legoland and chessington and if we’d get bored of them pretty quickly.

@Vgbeat can you use the standard ones in the parks at weekends outside of August though? That was my understanding.

Oblomov they have different events on through the year. Join the Merlin annual pass membership page on Facebook for loads of advice and tips.

stucknoue · 10/08/2019 12:01

If you shop in Tesco you can buy them with club card points. Only worth doing it if you genuinely want to visit lots of the sites in a calendar year, I cannot be doing with more than one theme park in a 12 month period

Justme1981 · 10/08/2019 12:05

I have the premium one & love it, live near alton towers premium includes weekends & car parking, it makes a big difference to me as otherwise i wouldnt be able to afford regular trips out

SistersOfPercy · 10/08/2019 12:16

DD lives in Milton Keynes and has the premium one. We live in Staffs. Between the London attractions and Alton Towers she gets a lot of use from it.

Hairyheadphones · 10/08/2019 12:19

I think as it’s a stretch for you you really need to take into account the extra cost of transport + food.

We had them for a year and really made a lot of use of them, by the end of our membership we were happy not to go to any of the theme parks again for a long time!

Relationshipsajoke · 10/08/2019 12:20

We have annual passes that we were bought as a Christmas gift last year, we’ve found them useful (although haven’t made it to any of the theme parks yet this year!) it’s great to be able to go for days out st little cost (there are 6 of us so it’s very costly for us!) but if I had to buy them myself I’m not sure if I would, if I had loads of spare cash - definitely, but if it was a struggle I wouldn’t.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/08/2019 12:21

can you use the standard ones in the parks at weekends outside of August though?
Yes you can.

Vgbeat · 10/08/2019 13:33

@Imustbemad00

Yes you can outside of August

Imustbemad00 · 10/08/2019 22:31

I think I’ve decided against. I don’t think we’d use them enough. As I said, I’m not keen on the London attractions. Maybe beciase I love so close and just see them as over crowded money making machines. It’s be mainly for Legoland and chessington and I’d occasionally pop to the sea life on a rainy day. But factoring in petrol, food and spending money too, I don’t know it’s be worth it. I don’t think I could visit the theme parks often enough to get the moneys worth. I’d get too fed up of it all I think.

I meant fed up of walking around, queuing for rides ect. I think after a couple of times I’d be done.
