Putting on 2kg in a few hours?

Hiya,

I don't know if this is normal or not but my scales which Bluetooth up to my phone are telling me that I have put on 2kg in the space of a few hours?! I have been out for dinner but surely not? My stepdad finds it hard to believe but I just wanted to know if anyone knows if this is normal or due to water etc. I'm very funny about my weight and have got into a habit of weighing myself multiple times a day. I feel rubbish now I have eaten a big meal.

Sorry I just realised I posted this in the wrong topic!

Perhaps stop weighing yourself multiple times a day, it's simply not good for your mental health.

DearDeirdre · 09/08/2019 21:07

This could easily happen with fluid and food intake, a good night's sleep, a poo snd a few wees will see you back to normal :)

BeeMyBaby · 09/08/2019 21:08

Yes totally normal. I always weigh myself in the morning before eating and after going to the loo as that's my lowest. By the evening and when dressed I'm 2-3kgs heavier.

Sunshine196 · 09/08/2019 21:10

For me it’s totally normal (and frustrating). I bloat really quickly. I’m going on a 2 week hol soon and I know I’ll come back at least 10lb heavier. I’ll lose about 7lb in the first week but it is annoying. I agree with not weighting several times a day. I’m currently trying to stop weighing everyday as it’s no good seeing it fluctuate so much.

colourlessgreenidea · 09/08/2019 21:31

You haven’t gained 2kg of fat in a matter of hours. 2kg is the weight of the food and drink you’ve had over the course of those hours, plus the accumulated mass in your colon, etc., from the day that has not yet been expelled.

Sparklesocks · 09/08/2019 21:35

It’s not a great idea to weigh yourself multiple times a day because things like water retention etc will have an impact

usernameee · 09/08/2019 21:37

Thank you everyone.

Subconsciously I am sure that it's just from eating and water etc but I have a really unhealthy obsession with the scales and get huge guilt when I eat more than two meals a day or unhealthy foods.

You're all right about stopping weighing myself everyday! It's silly because I used to never weigh myself as I didn't see the point!!

Not really an issue its normal to gain weight over the space of a day. If you weigh yourself at the same time usually first thing once a week you will get more accurate results.

dollydaydream114 · 09/08/2019 21:44

This is completely normal. This is also exactly why you shouldn’t constantly weigh yourself. Weigh yourself once a week, first thing in the morning after you’ve been to the loo.

I am currently using a personal trainer and the one thing he is absolutely adamant about is that weighing yourself all the time is a meaningless waste of time. My weight fluctuates by a couple of kilos in the space of a few hours due to sweating after exercise, water, salt consumption, time of the month etc. Body fat percentage and waist/hip measurements are much more important than weight. You can be very fit and lean and weigh much more than someone who is bigger and fatter.

Padiana · 09/08/2019 21:45

2 litres of water (which we're advised to drink every day to stay hydrated) weighs 2kg!

colourlessgreenidea · 09/08/2019 22:41

Subconsciously I am sure that it's just from eating and water etc

Never mind “subconsciously”, it’s a scientific impossibility for 2kg of fat to be created and stored on your body in a couple of hours.

2kg of fat is equivalent to around 14,000 calories. How could you have eaten, converted, and stored 14,000 calories within a few hours?

Fatted · 09/08/2019 22:46

You need to stop weighing yourself so often. Do it once first thing in the morning.
It's a fact that you weigh more later in the day because of what you eat and drink. Like others have said, a litre of water weighs a kilo.

Perhaps you need to get some help with your outlook on your weight and eating.

Cocobean30 · 09/08/2019 22:53

Op are you ok? Sounds like you have an eating disorder if you are afraid to eat more than two meals a day

slashlover · 09/08/2019 23:28

Bin the scales completely OP, go with how you feel in your clothes. Only eating two meals and the constant weighing is dangerous.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 09/08/2019 23:30

When I did Weight Watchers years ago they used to tell us not to weigh ourselves more often than once a week because it wouldn't give a good indication of weight loss or gain. Weighing yourself several times a day is surely causing unnecessary stress?

usernameee · 09/08/2019 23:41

It's so hard. It's like an addiction to weigh yourself and to always get below the last number in a way and I know it's unhealthy but it's really hard.

For people telling me that it's obvious you can't put on 2kg of fat in a day, sorry but I was just concerned that it wasn't necessarily fat but something else that wouldn't drop as easy as it went on.

Maybe I do need help after reading these commentsSadthank you for all your replies anyway. I feel reassured now

Totally normal but also shit scales. I have an expensive Salter set that give me 4-6lbs difference every time I step on them. Load of rubbish. I have an old cheap salter set that are more accurate than NHS scales. New scales are cheap and shoddy tbh.

dollydaydream114 · 09/08/2019 23:51

OP, if you are this obsessed with weight and food guilt, you do need some help. This is a level of obsession which isn't doing you any good at all and yes, I think if you are getting 'huge guilt' from eating more than two meals a day you are edging into eating disorder territory. Could you discuss this with your GP?

You're basically punishing yourself with the scales and it's making you anxious and unhappy and messing up your relationship with food. You deserve better than this xx

Mummoomoocow · 09/08/2019 23:55

FWIW scales need to be properly calibrated, preferably every time you use them, I’d have a look into how for your piece of mind considering your obsession with weighing yourself multiple times. You’ll get the true figure that you can mostly believe is right rather than any old number nearby your actual weight

Barmaid101 · 10/08/2019 00:27

When pregnant with HG I got admitted as I was dangerously dehydrated and very poorly. After several bags of fluid IVs I had put on over 2kg on the same day

Bravelurker · 10/08/2019 02:48

God I, to this day have no idea how to automatically convert from one measuring system to another. I know how much I weigh roughly in kgs, lbs and stones but I can only recognise weight loss /gain in stones.
Plus I NEVER weigh myself, just use my tightening /loosening clothes as a guide.

colourlessgreenidea · 10/08/2019 09:34

What sort of ‘something else’? Confused

SirTobyBelch · 10/08/2019 09:43

Electronic scales aren't accurate. I can weigh myself first thing in the morning, then half an hour later - after going to the toilet and not eating or drinking anything - weigh myself again and be 1-2 kg heavier. On one of those days I had a hospital appointment where I was weighed (with clothes & shoes on, and after eating) and was 3 kg lighter. You can't assume single measurements to be accurate. Weigh yourself at the same time every day and look at changes over the course of a week or two.

Even mechanical scales, which are much more accurate, will show different weights if you stand slightly differently.
