To make my 5mo sleep on a mattress on the floor

DS3 is currently in a Moses basket, he is outgrowing it.

From my experiences from my other two sons I hate cots as did they. My biggest issue was my back absolutely kills at the age where I need to lower them into cots. They woke for feeds, which I don’t begrudge. 😊. Just hurt me a lot to put them back in. This was made worse by the fact they both didn’t want to be in the cot so the lowering happened more than I wanted.
Anyway, I gave up on cots at around one year old both times went to a mattress or a cot bed. Would IBU to go directly to a mattress at 5mo.?
My biggest issue is our room is small and DS3 potentially could roll under our bed. If anyone could give me a safe way to prevent this, that would be great. I realise I could research this myself but I know i would just come back to mumsnet for a quick and sensible answer

Can’t you raise the mattress so it’s high up?

Cookit · 09/08/2019 20:46

We co-slept on a mattress on the floor for a long time (double mattress on the floor next to our bed). Only stopped because we moved house and could no longer fit it all in. It worked brilliantly.
With this baby I’m going to struggle a bit more when she’s moving because we’re on a proper bed.

littlepaddypaws · 09/08/2019 20:46

elephant feet under a cot to raise it, surely a 5 month isn't going to fuss about a cot.

BeanBag7 · 09/08/2019 20:47

@NoSauce but then the baby might fall off and hurt themselves??

OP I wouldnt do this if theres a chance he might end up under your bed. When hes a little older and starts crawling he might get under there and hurt himself.

I would either put him in his own room on a mattress, so you can baby proof it all, co-sleep, or get a divan bed so he cant roll under it and fully baby proof your bedroom.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 09/08/2019 20:47

Can you not just get a cot with adjustable heights? Mine has 4 different height options I think, so before DS could pull himself up I had it on the highest setting. No leaning over, no backache. Can't think of any safe way to keep a 5mo on a mattress on the floor and won't lowering him.onto the floor still hurt your back?

SlackerMum1 · 09/08/2019 20:48

Toddler size sleepyhead? It’s got bumpers so they can’t roll out. We had this as DD loved it but one of the great things was before she was mobile we could travel easily and just pop her on the floor.

NoSauce · 09/08/2019 20:49

@NoSauce but then the baby might fall off and hurt themselves??

Huh? I mean raise the mattress in the cot so it’s not too low down to hurt the OPs back. There’s 3 settings iirc in a cot.

I put your mattress in the floor from 6 months when we started to cosleep. It’s a trendy floor bed. Very Montessori.

CherryPavlova · 09/08/2019 20:50

Block your underbed space.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 09/08/2019 20:51

That would be our mattress.

CherryPavlova · 09/08/2019 20:51

Or don’t use a mattress but let him sleep on the floor.

Dandelionrarrrr · 09/08/2019 20:52

I have a cot in my loft which has 2 different heights. Still hurt my back.

My understanding would be to settle on floor. When he wakes get up kneel down to comfort and get back into my bed.

Crunchymum · 09/08/2019 20:55

How is kneeling down on the floor going to be better? Shock

flowerstar19 · 09/08/2019 20:55

Mattress on floor with a bed guard on the side near your bed so he can't roll out?

Knoxinbox · 09/08/2019 20:56

Just put the double bed mattress on the floor and cosleep with him. Simples Wink

RockyRocky · 09/08/2019 20:57

I have lingering PGP, couldn't lift him in and out of cot, so went straight to cot bed with him, with a mattress next to his bed (which I would lie on while he settled. And slept on when he needed me)

Dandelionrarrrr · 09/08/2019 20:59

@Crunchymum i suppose like downward dog would help your back. Lower, rather than bend and lift.

Get a cot with different base levels. Do not put a five month old baby on a mattress on the floor by themselves to sleep.

tenredthings · 09/08/2019 21:09

Get rid of your bed base and put your mattress on the floor next to him.

notso · 09/08/2019 21:11

Why don't you put him straight into a toddler bed?
I know a few people who've skipped straight from Moses basket to toddler or single bed.

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/08/2019 21:17

Toddler bed with pillows or some such on the floor in case he falls?

Or a toddler sized ready bed? Basically like an airbed with a sewn on blanket - sell them in Argos etc.

Frlrlrubert · 09/08/2019 21:17

We attached the cot to the bed with the closest side off so I didn't have to get up to feed.

I had DD's mattress a tiny bit lower so she didn't roll into bed with us and was careful about my duvet.

HatingTheBigShow · 09/08/2019 21:21

Yes to strapping a 3-sided cot bed to yours, it worked perfectly for us, especially good for night feeds if you're BF

emelsie · 09/08/2019 21:28

Some of these suggestions seem pretty dangerous , I'm not sure of the perfect solution but I would make sure to check the safe sleeping guidelines before you decide on anything.
