Mysterious "replacement" credit card - aibu to think it's a scam?

I received a letter today addressed to someone with a similar but different name - e.g. if my name was Lisa Robinson (it isn't) the name would be something like Ms A Obinson. Inside was a genuine-looking replacement MBNA credit card. We've never had an MBNA card - we only have one credit card with our main bank.

We've lived in our house for a year, but the previous people had a very different name and had lived here for 25 years.

Could this be some sort of scam, e.g. to encourage people to call the number on the letter, or perhaps even use the card? My instinct is to cut up the card and put the whole lot in the bin, but wondering if anyone's heard of anything similar or has an idea of how it could have happened.

You shouldn't have opened it. It should have been returned to the sender.

First check your credit report. My DH had application for a loan with his misspelled name and it was identity fraud

Don't ring the number on the letter. Look up the bank's fraud department and give them a call.
