Any NHS experts? If you are a fit but elderly male, how do they fix low blood pressure?

Just that.

It's my Dad.

Someone has told me that they can't fix it and I don't believe them...

There isn’t a lot to be done for low blood pressure, eat more salt and drink more water is usually the advice. There are some medications for the kind of low blood pressure which strikes when you stand up from sitting or lying down.

PinkBuffalo · 08/08/2019 23:20

I was told to up my salt intake (neurologist advised this). I have low blood pressure too. Not much they can do I'm afraid. I already drink huge amounts of water

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:22

Paqhita

That is exactly the type I mean.

Do you have any other advice?

Depends on what is causing it.
Has he always had it?

Seeingadistance · 08/08/2019 23:27

I’ve always had low blood pressure. There really is little to nothing that can be done about - assuming it isn’t a symptom of something else which can be treated.

It can be managed though. Taking care not to stand up too fast, not having overly hot baths, sitting down if start to feel faint etc.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:28

Is there anything you can do for the stand up or sit down mediation?

OP posts:
Seeingadistance · 08/08/2019 23:28

Not everything is fixable.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:29

Omg.

What do you mean by that?

OP posts:
OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:31

Please don't leave it there?

Seeingadistance · 08/08/2019 23:31

You just have to remember to take your time moving from one position to another. When I get out the bath, I do it in stages. If I feel I’m getting woozy I stop or sit back down again.

It really is a matter of being more self-aware and knowing what is likely to make you keel over, and how to move to prevent that.

Northernlurker · 08/08/2019 23:31

Old is old, bits of the body start wearing out. Not everything can be reversed.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:32

Seeing

How old are you?

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:33

North

So. What's old?

OP posts:
Seeingadistance · 08/08/2019 23:33

How is it affecting your dad?

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 08/08/2019 23:33

Fludrocortisone and midodrine can help with postural hypotension but they don't work for everyone and are not suitable for everyone. It can be a rather difficult problem to treat and depends how it affects him.

Is he falling?

Seeingadistance · 08/08/2019 23:34

I’m in my early 50s but I’ve always had low blood pressure. My mother is the same and so was her mother.

Northernlurker · 08/08/2019 23:37

How ageing affects somebody depends on genetics, lifestyle, luck. There is no arbitrary age at which your warranty runs out. Different bits go at different ages. I would say 60-75 is 'not young' and 75 plus is old. 94 plus is super elderly to me.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:38

Hes recently had an op.

Today they needed blood.

They fkd it up. 3 out of 4 times. Then he fainted.

What next? Apparently his blood pressure is low?

OP posts:
fivecupsoftea · 08/08/2019 23:40

If his blood pressure is lower than usual because of the surgery then it will probably improve as he recovers. Have a chat with the health care professionals about your dad’s situation.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/08/2019 23:45

Liquorice root tea. Will order some.
