Let's say you're due date is August 30th, and you had 100% control over when to do the section, when would you pick, to give best health chances to baby but to avoid an emergency c-section?

I heard some people even wait until labour starts, but that seems risky! but it's so hard to find information on this online.

39th week on a weekday morning.

I would go for 39 weeks and I'd put the days in a hat (so to speak) and pick one out... I hate the idea of choosing my babys birth date!

Purpleartichoke · 09/08/2019 03:02

Faced with this exact scenario, I chose 39 weeks. The doctor was willing to do the section as soon as 37. The doctor explained that waiting increased my odds of having to have general and not getting to be awake for the birth, but decreased the odds baby would spend time in the nicu. For me, it was an obvious trade off. I also agreed to keep my bag packed and stay in a reasonable radius of the hospital so if I felt any contractions I could head there immediately.

It worked out perfectly.

Id probably choose anywhere in the 38th week. I went into labour with my daughter at 38+5

Gillian1980 · 09/08/2019 13:10

I’d go for exactly 39 weeks.... I had ds by elective caesarean at 39+2 and was having loads of early labour signs for the last couple of days which was stressing me out.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 09/08/2019 13:12

My choice would be the closest Tuesday to 39w if that was an even date. If it wasn’t the closest Monday or Friday.
Best of luck with the birth 💐

Mine was at 39+1. I was told they only do ELCS’s before 39 weeks if it is medically necessary.

queenofmycastlex · 09/08/2019 13:28

Anytime in 39th week and the start of the week (Monday/Tuesday) in case you get bumped. If you get bumped on a Friday it’s usually until the following Monday so you have the weekend to wait!

Outnumbered99 · 09/08/2019 13:34

As soon as possible not a Friday would be my choice.

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 09/08/2019 13:34

For me, growth had slowed down so we chose 37 + 5 and I had steroid injections to help lung growth. He's now 7 and has never had any health problems.

Constance1234 · 09/08/2019 13:43

I agree with the pp - have it early on in the week if you can, so late in the 38th week or early in the 39th week depending on which days of the week they are. I had an emcs on a Friday and we had to wait for some blood test results before we were discharged and the lab wasn’t open during the weekend.

Kaiylee · 09/08/2019 14:47

I'd go 39+1 to reduce risk of natural labour as well as chance of issues.

I've had babies born 7 and 11 days early with no issues at all. Any time after 37 weeks is good but most are born within a week either side so I'd choose within that timeframe.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/08/2019 14:49

39+1.

With NICE guidelines for being mature enough for lung development. Avoids any possible unknown early placenta failure issues.
