I'm watching Shop Well For Less, and the presenters are saying... you have 17 mascara, and they're worth £200, or you have 18 aftershave and they're worth £1,000

No thats not what they are worth it's how much it cost!!

Sorry I don't get your point. I saw it on TV for a few minutes. The couple were really bad with money they needed to be shown what they were wasting their cash on.

RosaWaiting · 08/08/2019 20:33

I’ve never watched the programme but I know exactly what you mean OP.

GreenShadow · 08/08/2019 20:34

I find this programme so scary. How can people have so little idea of how much they are spending .

Totally ignoring the point of the original post)

CruellaFeinberg · 08/08/2019 20:34

But what they have is not worth £xx what they have cost £xx

They dont have an asset that is worth an amounr as they wanted to get money for what they have they would not get £xx, would you pay £200 for 17 used mascara?

They are not worth that amount, they cost that amount

I haven't watched it, but if they are supposed to be telling the people how to save money, it seems counter-productive to talk in terms of 'worth' for consumer goods that have a huge mark-up to begin with and are completely unsalable once opened.

Mybestfriendisanalien · 08/08/2019 20:36

Blimey OP, are you this predator about everything?

StCharlotte · 08/08/2019 20:37

Technically you're correct but meanwhile in real life...

Mybestfriendisanalien · 08/08/2019 20:37

Pedantic - not predator!

Shalligo · 08/08/2019 20:39

OP you’re absolutely right. And this is a point which is lost on my neighbour who is trying to sell her bike “worth £300”. No love. It’s now worth about £20.

RosaWaiting · 08/08/2019 20:40

If the point of the show is to help, people spend less, they absolutely should use “cost” instead of “worth”. Even aside from that, it’s not pedantic.

I had a mad friend who wanted to insure some jewellery because she thought it was worth a lot. I told her not to pay out to insure it, so she took it to a jeweller, who confirmed it wasn’t “worth” a lot, but had cost a lot. (Costume jewellery, branded).

Shalligo · 08/08/2019 20:41

And if more people understand depreciation then there would be less debt.

I listened to someone on the radio wittering on about how her selection of shoes was an “investment.” No. Because they depreciate straightaway unless they are one or two rare models of rare manufacturers AND you never wear them.

CruellaFeinberg · 09/08/2019 07:40

@Mybestfriendisanalien it's not pedantic, its accurate. To me they're saying, you could make your money back by selling all your stuff, but it's not right

It's like when people want to sell something on facebook or ebay, well it cost me £50 so I want £49, nevermind its knackered now
