Utterly crap that the uk is pulling out of interrail

Pulling out in Feb 2020. British young people will still be able to buy an interrail pass to travel in the rest of Europe, but the uk will not be included in the countries covered by interrail, so any European young person wanting to add the uk to their trip will have to buy a separate ‘BritPass’ covering the UK only, that costs around the same as the pass for rest of Europe. Why? And how many are actually going to do that?

Another triumph for Little Englanders. How parochial we are set to become.

Noting to do with Brexit - sorry to burst your bubble.

Interrail are not offering the passes into the UK because the UK has never accepted Eurail passes.

The RDG (rail delivery group) wanted to stay a member but have been told no. It was talked about last time the membership was renewed which was long before brexit.

Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit but don't let the truth get in the way of a good rant.

Miaowing · 08/08/2019 09:25

And I believe the reason we never accepted Eurail passes was because the way the funding was shared out was detrimental to the UK.

Did I mention Brexit? Interesting that you chose to make that leap though.

You can read about the decision to pull out here -

Sounds to me like it was a British decision to opt out? Going by the article above at least

I went interrailing in 2000 after finishing uni. The basic pass even in Europe doesn't cover a lot of services. Anything intercity or between countries was pretty much extra to the pass. So we paid a lot of supplements even having brought the pass. Plus it didn't cover the whole of europe then. I seem to remember the Scandinavian countries being extra on top.off the basic pass.

Miaowing - you sound a bit obsessed with Brexit given that OP didn't even mention it! What is to do with Brexit however, is that British 18 year olds won't be able to apply for the free interrail pass after Brexit - something which my ds hopes to do in a few years' time hopefully.

I went inter-flying a few years ago. Flying from Athens to Bratislava to Copenhagen or whatever works out cheaper and faster than the train. Yes, the inter-rail pass is aimed at cash-poor / time-rich students, but the cost of eating each day and lodging every night adds up too, so your two-day train journey ends up costing more than a two-hour flight.

Besides, with most people choosing to book accommodation in advance online, they might as well book their transport in advance too, and save money.

"Another triumph for Little Englanders. How parochial we are set to become."

Usual line trotted out by remainers. So forgive me if I jumped to the conclusion.

It was the UK decision not to accept Eurail - which we have never done.

It was not the UK decision to stop accepting Interail unless you take "you can't have Interrail if you won't accept Eurail" being given as a choice.

Errrr...... this sounds awfully like a Brexit rant I voted Remain by the way

Yeah I'm a staunch remainer but I also would have thought the 'Little Englanders' comment was a dig at Brexiteers and the fact the word Brexit wasn't mentioned was a convenient way to backpedal when most people can read between the lines.

Miaowing · 08/08/2019 12:40

I'm just conscious that Brexit is being blamed for everything negative - even if it has nothing to do with Brexit!

Blaming Brexit as a knee jerk reaction stops the actual underlying issues being identified.

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/08/2019 18:26

Hooray - the decision has been reversed following public outcry.
