Get your dog away from me!

I'm sick of dogs charging / jumping up at / barking at my dd.5. I'm.not a dog hater ( I used to have a Labrador) but why is it ok for dogs to approach / bark/ jump up at me) my DD? More to the point what can I do to stop this? Would a silent dog whistle help? I have NO issue with any other dogs, on lead / off lead but with perfect recall etc.

I have to agree with other posters in how much of a problem this has become.

I go out running and the amount of dogs who have jumped up on me in unreal and sadly for the poor dog they get kneed out of the way. Then there are the dogs who run along with me as their owners frantically call on them to come back which they ignore. Not good as I’m not stopping on my 10 mile run just because their dog is off the lead and clearly not trained.

Now there are some lovely dog owners who put their dog on a lead/stand to the side with their dog and they always get a cheerful thank you as I go past but it does seem to be getting worse.

Also they are smaller and slower than a lot of dogs, and much less likely to hassle you on a walk or picnic

Also a lot less likely to injure, cause pain, or draw blood.

I like dogs but I'm fed up of them nipping at my heels when I'm running in the woods: "he won't bite". Ok, but he won't come back to you when called either. You do your thing, I'll do my thing please.

Mammatino · 09/08/2019 14:47

Yanbu. I love dogs and used to keep ridge backs that were as soft as butter. They were always leashed, they had excellent recall. I knew they were perfectly safe but I doubt some poor walker would know it if they saw the buggers racing towards them. My dogs my responsibility, a wasp sting a loud bang and the softest friendliest animals can turn and do serious damage. My little boy was knocked over by a couple of dogs off leads, in a leads only area. The owners couldn't understand why my son was so terrified, as the massive barking beasts were so friendly. He is now scared to death of all dogs, we are desperately trying to overcome this.

I've never come across so many dog-haters as I have on MN. Is this aBritish thing or a parent issue?

InTheHeatofLisbon · 09/08/2019 15:38

I love dogs, I've never not had a dog as far back as I can remember.

BUT I can't abide people who don't keep their dogs under control and allow them to approach, jump up on or otherwise get too close to strangers. It's ridiculously irresponsible and selfish.

I'm a support worker for adults with disabilities and last week my manager and I were out with a service user for a walk. He's nervous around dogs and we have risk assessments and strategies in place for when we come across dogs.

There was a man with two Weimaraners who bounded up to us (boss and I stood between SU and dogs) jumping and pawing. He could clearly see that our SU was distressed, and that we were trying to keep the dogs away but it took a very firm "call your dogs back, NOW!" from my manager before he did anything, and then he took the hump.

My SU was distressed for 4 days afterwards, he's non verbal and had a really tough time. That has never happened before, usually the owners don't have to be told and the strategies work.

Shockingly arrogant owner.

Batshit I've never come across so many dog-haters as I have on MN. Is this aBritish thing or a parent issue?

I haven't read any comments from people saying they hate dogs.

I have read many comments from people saying they were afraid of dogs out of control, and were made uncomfortable by them and avoided going places because of them.

That's a bit different from being a dog hater.

Perhaps there aren't many places where people can discuss this topic other than online discussion groups? Are there other places you would expect it to be discussed instead?

YANBU, my DD is still terrified of dogs after a little terrier ran at her in a park when she was two. She’s now eight and would literally jump in the road to avoid a dog approaching us if I let her.

MNersAreBatshit · 09/08/2019 16:36

Maybe "hate" is a bit strong. More weirdly hung up about/ unusually uncomfortable with.

I got bitten and ended up in A&E and on antibiotics for 2 weeks following what should have been a nice run.

I would say avoiding the park where it and a number of incidents of being chased by dogs happened is a fairly sane reaction.

I'm still not scared of most dogs but I am more wary. It was an extremely deep bite which fortunately missed any major bits but even so was incredibly painful and stung like hell. Left massive bruising too. Being bitten by a dog is really horrible.

According to the owner, it happened because I was running.

Joggers are a lot more of a nuisance than dogs round us. Earlier this week we were walking past scar half parked on the pavement, a jogger clearly couldn’t wait 2 seconds and barged is out the way.

Joggers that count pounding up behind you and scare the shit out of you need more consideration of what they are doing

Applejack5 · 09/08/2019 18:16

Haha what have joggers got to do with it?

Nonnymum · 09/08/2019 18:39

wouldn't be a problem if all the off-leash dogs were well trained and didn't bother anyone. People still have the right to walk in those places without being hassled by a dog.
This. People should always come before dogs. A dogs right to run free doesn't trump a person's.

harrypotterfan1604 · 09/08/2019 19:15

My dogs love all people including children and think everyone wants to be greeted with a huge pounce bark and lick so they stay on their lead and when we pass another person I pull them into me so this does not happen.
Bad owners giving us decent owners bad reputations 🙄

MoreFrog · 09/08/2019 19:29

I don't hate dogs, but I don't like them either. I don't want them near me, I don't want their nose in my crotch, I don't want to smell them and I don't want them running up to me or chasing me or barking at me. All of which I've experienced in my lifetime, some more often than others.
I completely ignore them wherever possible. Nose in crotch is difficult as I I'm nervous to push them away as they might get stroppy. I have to ask the owner to get them off me.
I shouldn't have to do that. I wish people would keep their dogs under control.

sprite25 · 09/08/2019 19:39

Morefrog a relative used to have a dog like that when I was younger, it used to forcefully bury it's face in everyone's crotch, it was gross and embarrassing and was really difficult to get it to leave you alone, and said relative would just watch you struggle with it trying to get it away from between your legs 🤢

MoreFrog · 09/08/2019 19:50

just watch you struggle with it trying to get it away from between your legs

And more often than not they think it's funny.

sprite25 · 09/08/2019 20:02

DHs parents used to seem to think it was funny when their giant German shepherd would jump all over me and get in my face when I was sitting on sofa, even used to jump on my pregnant bump which they would just sit there lovingly looking at the dog like it was an angel
