When you’re wearing a T-shirt outside and feel comfortable in it...it’s too early for Xmas!

YouFellAsleeep · 07/08/2019 20:56

Surely people are used to this by now? It happens every year. I really don’t see what the big deal is. It’s just stuff.

StarlingsInSummer · 07/08/2019 20:56

I flove the run up to Christmas but not before October at the absolute earliest! It’s ridiculous that it takes up four months of the year as it is, let alone six.

Jsmith99 · 07/08/2019 20:57

Christmas stuff in the shops in August is completely ridiculous, of course, but retailers are not stupid. They do it because they know some idiots will buy it.

It’s such a shame, because Christmas would be more enjoyable if it wasn’t rammed down our throats for five bloody months every year. By the time it actually gets to the first of December, most people are already sick & tired of sodding Christmas.

But Christmas is 1 day out of 365 why do we need 4-5 months of it being rammed down our throats. I don't want people to get used to it and I certainly don't want companies thinking its acceptable or before we know it, the shops will be stocked before Easter.

IceRebel · 07/08/2019 21:05

That article; whilst on a thoroughly depressing subject, was actually very entertaining. Grin

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/08/2019 21:10

Thankfully not seen anything in shops yet but a hotel near us is already sporting its 'book now for Christmas' sign!

August is just far too early to be thinking about Christmas things!

I like to have Halloween and Bonfire before thinking about Christmas.

zeezee3 · 07/08/2019 21:11

Not seen any yet!

Pinkout · 07/08/2019 21:18

I haven’t seen anything yet, it’s usually September when the summer time and back to school shit has gone. Shops constantly need something to plug I suppose. Good ol’ capitalism...

Buddyelf · 07/08/2019 21:24

I love Christmas. It’s my absolute favourite time of year but it being in the shops too early ruins the magic of it. November onwards and I’m happy. Anything before Halloween is weird.

HelenaDove · 07/08/2019 21:35

I dont understand the lack of chronological order We have Christmas things in the shops before Halloween and Bonfire Night things

And Easter eggs in the shops before Valentine presents and chocs.

RuggerHug · 08/08/2019 07:00

It's not one day though, it's the Christmas season [santa]

ohdearwhatdoido · 08/08/2019 07:33

Ahh these threads! Grin

I work in retail and have to start getting Christmas out over the next couple of weeks ready for September. The wholesalers are already sending my orders (that were placed in February) and I have nowhere to store the products so they have to go out.

FWIW it makes me hate Christmas. By the time the kids convince me to put our decorations up I have zero interest because I've been looking at it all for months, and that definitely brings the mood down at home.

So on behalf of many who work in retail - Christmas stock comes out at the same time EVERY year and we don't actually expect you to buy it yet. We know it's too early! We know you don't want to look at it! But nor do we (even though we aren't allowed to say that) and people whinging about it to us 183649201 times a day doesn't make us feel any better Grin so please just ignore and come back to it in November.

EdithWeston · 08/08/2019 07:38

I'm more pissed off at seeing Xmas threads outside the topic before Advent Sunday tbh.

It's one of the lovely features of MN, that with a bit of consideration, both those who love an early start to Christmas and those who loathe that are both happy on one site.

People have been really considerate in the last couple of years (even more than before) so I really hope it's kept up this year.

SirJamesTalbot · 08/08/2019 07:57

I used to work for a large retail card company. The majority of the year's profit comes from Christmas sales. I don't like the seemingly-constant rushing onto the next 'season' whilst the store and back office staff finish up the preceding season but this is the reality of the retail industry. Blame Mr Selfridge.

allthegins · 08/08/2019 08:16

I don’t get why it bothers people so much. People like to prepare in advance. No big deal

LizzieBananas · 08/08/2019 08:21

My village pub will have the Christmas booklet/menu out by Bank Holiday and will be fully booked (for Xmas Day at least) before the end of September. There certainly is a market for it.

SunshineySu · 08/08/2019 08:24

It's fucking ridiculous and utterly shit.
It's not even mid August. This is the reason why any poor sod that didn't calculate thier kids growing rate correctly in May will be utterly fucked if needing to buy any school uniform in the supermarkets at the start of September.
Why is the shopping calendar so utterly
fucked?

Pressure to spend obscene amounts on a one day festival.

More and more plastic shite for landfill.

This gives me so much rage. I just think how much nicer and simpler a very back to basic Christmas, would be.

ShatnersWig · 08/08/2019 08:31

I would ban the display of Christmas decorations until December. I would ban shops from selling anything Christmas related until December with the exceptions of Christmas cards which I would allow in November as some people still send quite a lot and need a while to write them and if they are going abroad, post them in good time. I started receiving "book your Christmas party" stuff at work in early July. That can fuck off too. I get that offices may want to book ahead to ensure they can get in, but it's no surprise that Christmas happens every December. It's not difficult for someone to sort stuff out without the need for advertising like that six months ahead.

OtraCosaMariposa · 08/08/2019 08:34

The only thing I'd allow early is crafting supplies. Things like fabric and cardstock need to be available year round for crafters who make things all year round as gifts or to sell.

ooooohbetty · 08/08/2019 08:35

Shops only put xmas stuff out because people buy it. Not me. I'm a last week in December shopper. Xx

ShatnersWig · 08/08/2019 08:50

Shops only put xmas stuff out because people buy it

But do they really, though, in any great quantity? I don't know anyone who buys Xmas stuff in August or September. I know one who starts shopping in October because their job is ridiculously full on in December. Pretty much everyone else I know does sod all about Xmas until mid-November earliest.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 08/08/2019 09:00

Premature seasonal sales cause me to buy less because by the time the season actually occurs and I realise that I could do with buying something, all that is left is the battered dregs that have been out for months.

I struggled with summer clothes for a few years because having some late summer holidays, all that was in was revolting/ tatty sales dregs and winter stock. Shorts and vest tops weren't on my agenda back when the stock was fresh and I was still wrapped up against the wind and rain.

And we wonder why the high street struggles when they don't actually sell what people want at sensible times.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2019 09:05

Blimey, I've just realised we're a full week into August and I've not had a single charity Xmas catalogue yet. ConfusedGrin
