To pass this interview up?

I previously worked 13 years in a job. A couple of weeks ago, I applied for the same job in a different location. I've been offered an interview next Monday.
I want to say yes, BUT, if I got the job it would be a 3-4 hour round trip in the car each day. I would need to find day care/a walker for the dog. On top of that, I don't have enough petrol in the car to get there and back on Monday and don't have enough money to put petrol in the car (not even £1 for the pay at pump).
So, with a heavy heart, I'm going to decline the interview.
I'm doing the right thing, aren't I?

Yes because I wouldn't want that commute daily. I'd not have applied to be honest

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 07/08/2019 17:55

Are you unemployed at the moment?

DuesToTheDirt · 07/08/2019 17:55

Why did you apply? You knew the location then, yes?

itbemay1 · 07/08/2019 17:55

Yes. I had a 1.5 hour commute doing 12 hour shifts and it exhausted me. Only lasted 6 months

PinkyPrincessy · 07/08/2019 17:56

The money for fuel is one thing. There are hundreds of ways to make petrol money before Monday.

But a 3-4 hour commute. Not a chance

Ilikewinter · 07/08/2019 17:57

Yes, that daily commute will be hell

Jarimbert · 07/08/2019 18:09

@DuesToTheDirt I applied because it's a job I know well. I had also hoped that, if I got the job, I could potentially move to the area or nearer to the job.
@Wellandtrulyoutnumbered I'm not unemployed, but my current job is unsuitable for me.
The issue is that, this kind of job doesn't turn up very often (I've been checking every day since I left the post I was in for 13 years). Finding one that's even remotely close is even rarer. It could be another 4 years before one closer to me turns up.

Have you changed your mind about moving?

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/08/2019 18:45

3-4 hour round trip is what a lot of people do nowadays. It's worth going to the interview for interview practice. If the job turned out to be stunning, you could see if there was any way to get an advance to get yourself to work until the first pay cheque came in.

Jarimbert · 07/08/2019 18:48

@MissTrent I'd still like to move, but where the job is, when I've done research, the rent near the new job is more expensive than rents where I am now. I'd been in 2 minds before the interview. I could afford the rent near the new job, but would have to spend at least a few weeks doing the commute before I'd be able to move there.

If it’s an opportunity that comes up so rarely, and you say you’re open minded about relocating if it goes well, why not take a chance?
Nothing ventured...

HeadintheiClouds · 07/08/2019 18:51

A few weeks of the commute is immaterial in the wider scheme of things?

DuesToTheDirt · 07/08/2019 18:58

If it's only a few weeks, then a move, I'd go to the interview. I'm in a similarly narrow field and often wish I had a skill such that I could work anywhere.
