That you shouldn't get on a plane with a sickness bug?

Just seen a 'friend' (honestly don't even know them- no idea why I'm friends with them!) on Facebook complain about having come down with a stomach bug last night and unable to keep water down, still vomiting etc but has asked for suggestions on how to get better quick as she's going to the airport this evening to go on holiday!

AIBU that you shouldn't infect everyone with your very contagious bug on a plane when everyone wants to enjoy their holiday? Selfish.

YANBU.

Very selfish behaviour.

PeoniesarePink · 07/08/2019 12:09

Horrendously selfish and a bit thick but sadly most people with norovirus are.

That's why it spreads so much.

Its awful isn't it! I keep thinking about the poor people who work on the planes/passengers nearby who will no doubt catch it.

Why are people so stupid? If I had a bug I'd stay home for 48hrs till clear. It's not hard!

I am an emetophobe and stories like this make me shudder travelling is bad enough with the fear of someone getting travel sick but I do have some level of sympathy.

We have only been able to afford one holiday abroad in the past 4 years (it was an AI package deal, this is relevant) . Had one of us come down with a sickness bug it wouldn't have been as simple as "the sick person just flies out after they meet the 48h rule"

  • If one of the kids were ill, and adult would have to stay.
  • It wasn't a destination that has several low budget flights a day, so getting there on a different flight wouldn't have been easy
  • It would have shaved 3 days off of the holiday
  • in all likeliness other members of the family would have come down with it.

I would never travel when ill, I have missed a family wedding (1 hour flight) as the baby has D&V, but I do on some level understand why someone would consider it!

A friend of mine posted something similar last year - she just wanted a good excuse to throw a sickie at work as she hadn't packed & still explain holiday photos! (she had FB friends she worked with)

I can’t imagine anything worse than being on a plane with a bug. Imagine if you end up with diarrhoea the whole way it would be awful and mortifying. I couldn’t bring myself to do it let alone infect everyone else

I was recently on a plane with Typhoid Harry, I swear to god. Okay maybe not Typhoid. But the dude was hacking up a lung for seven hours. Three days later, it was my turn. I was not happy.

I really don't think norovirus has a preference for selfish and thick people, it's not that clever.

It spreads so much because it is air borne and with the best will in the world it's pretty hard to avoid tiny lurgies in the air.

Of course you shouldn't (but the reality is I probably would!) You and your family would lose their holiday , insurance wouldn't pay out etc

heydiddlediddle21 · 07/08/2019 13:52

My daughter and niece ended up being hospitalised abroad after catching a sickness bug (guessing from the flight as they started with the sickness the day after arriving) it's very selfish to fly with a stomach bug.

Sandybval · 07/08/2019 13:58

It is selfish, but people always put themselves first so...I'm sure everyone else on the plane will thoroughly enjoy the toilet being occupied for most of the flight, with a side of sickness bug during their holiday if they're really lucky.

dudsville · 07/08/2019 14:29

Not all flights are taken for the luxury of holidays. Some are for work, some are for family emergencies, etc., I don't see it as any different to people who take public transport for work. As this happens in those contexts I can understand why people would forget and do it under less exacting circumstances. Also people may not have money to travel home if they don't take the flights they've paid for. I think we should be more skilled at hygiene; masks, antibac, etc.

CRbear · 07/08/2019 14:32

Selfish or not but there’s no way I wouldn’t try to get the flight if it was for a holiday, never mind a funeral or worse. Insurance rarely pays out and I’d be amazed if they did for a family missing a holiday due to a bug.

My nephew once caught and vomiting and diarrhoea bug the day before we were due to fly home - travel insurance did not cover us staying, everything would have needed to be paid for by us - even mentioned it at check in hoping the airline would let us change to the later that day flight nope they wanted us to rebook completely as they said he was ok to travel - he vomited during the flight and unfortunately had an accident once the seatbelt signs had been lit for landing- we had taken precaution of sitting him on a bag. Felt awful for the other poor people on the plane but not sure what else we could have done (he had an antiemetic and Imodium) - insurance doctor said he was fit to fly.
