"The Gym"

cjt110 · 07/08/2019 10:35

Due to the dire state of my body and weight gain I'm considering joining "The Gym"

£20.99 a month for gym use plus classes etc. No contract blah blah bah. Seems to good to be true?

The main problem I found was you actually have to go

cjt110 · 07/08/2019 10:39

@formerbabe Yep... that's a stumbling block. The classes alone attract me to be honest. I have done zumba and pilates before but at £6 a session that's £48 a month which i can't afford.

I used to go to 'Pure Gym' - same sort of thing as the one you're talking about here. There was no catch and I sometimes vaguely enjoyed it, and other times could barely walk home (I had a personal trainer for a brief period so got all the routines, which machine to use etc, from her). There was a swipe card to get into the actual building and I think I had to provide my own padlock for locker, but no biggie.

As per @formerbabe, I sometimes found the attendance part difficult Grin

I make myself go when the DC are in bed when DH is home from work; mostly I use the classes because after a couple of weeks you get to know people and the sense of being part of something makes you continue going.

The actual gym bit I use once a week at most because it's full of boring equipment I've no interest in.

Violashift · 07/08/2019 10:51

I am a member of ' The gym' is only 12.99 a month but as a pp said you do have to go.

It really is a no frills gym but I love it.

Halloumimuffin · 07/08/2019 10:56

I used to go there, it was basic but no issues with it. Place was clean and hygienic (and less smelly than my current Bannatynes), could go whenever you wanted, the no contract is exactly what it says on the tin. If you don't need complicated hi tech equipment and sauna facilities etc, it's absolutely great. You do have to buy a padlock, they sell them there.

TSSDNCOP · 07/08/2019 10:58

You don’t have to go. But you will need to wear Active Wear to all the places you go to avoid going “ah god I was going to the gym but I had to get my tyres changed instead”

You also have to eat fewer calories than you are burning and also try to eat good food rather than sugar/carbs/processed rubbish.

For most people, it's what they eat rather than activity that leads to weight loss/gain. But being active is always good and if being a member of a gym is how you want to do that, great.

WhatHaveIFound · 07/08/2019 11:06

I've a member of 'The Gym' for just over a year and am really enjoying it. Been to 3 classes in 2 days so i'm aching at the moment but in a good way.

I probaby go 10-12 times a month (depending on work) so it's great value for money. Love that all the classes are included.

cjt110 · 07/08/2019 11:07

@BarbaraofSeville Yes, I am also working with my food too

Depends on the area. Mine was full of sexist drugged up bodybuilders who like to lift in flip flops whilst making sexy eyes at themselves in the mirror. Definitely wouldn't go there on own at night or early morning. And any other time they won't let u use weights.

ohnoessexgirl · 07/08/2019 11:10

Seriously don't bother. What you eat is more important that anything else. Try Keto and go for a brisk walk every day. Honestly. It'll work.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/08/2019 11:15

I just joined 'the gym' on a deal for £28 a month. I can go to any of the 4 local leisure centres and choose to gym, swim, ice skate or do classes.
The lovely Adam who booked ne in nearly killed me with my introduction to my exercises designed to strengthen and where I need to improve after an op. I can still not do stairs without wincing 4 days later....

Ponoka7 · 07/08/2019 11:58

You can get the same deal, here in Liverpool for £16.99 a month. So I'd say it was an average deal, not too good to be true.

Look up the classes and see if they're at a time that suits you.

"Seriously don't bother. What you eat is more important that anything else."

For really good health you do. Women should be protecting their muscle and bone density.

Then sign up.

LettuceP · 07/08/2019 12:06

I've just joined a no frills gym, £14.99 a month. No intention of using the equipment but I want to do at least 1 class a week (preferably 3 but it's a case of finding the time) so it's definitely cheaper than paying £6-£10 per class. I've been to one class so far and really enjoyed it, have booked two for next week. I have considered joining one of those fancy gyms with a creche as then I could go whenever I want but it's eye wateringly expensive and I would seriously struggle to afford it.

AliDran · 07/08/2019 12:07

I have the same chain at the bottom of my road, but they outsourced Zumba and Pilates, and so charged extra for those classes. At £6 a class, it more than doubled the monthly membership. Plus, all their classes are squashed into a small space, next to the treadmills, in front of the windows, which put me off. The only plus point, was that it's a 24 hour gym, which as a shift worker, is useful

Thump · 07/08/2019 12:20

I find getting out of the blooming door to go is the killer. You'd swear I was about to hike Mount Everest some days. So I say, look, just take it easy, don't push yourself, and tend to do the short 1/2 hour classes rather than the longer ones as I'm more likely to go. The circuit type ones are good as the time flies moving from one station to the next.
But as I said, don't overthink getting there, just pack your bag and your water and walk the fuck out that door. says she who failed to go to Pilates today

HavelockVetinari · 07/08/2019 12:43

I'm a member of Virgin Active. It costs £50 per month for me and 2-year-old DS, but it is SO worth it - brilliant baby pool, proper 25m pool, spa, climbing wall, creche, amazing gym, great classes.

I have a brilliant PT too (who I actually hate as he makes me hurt).

Worth every penny!

managedmis · 07/08/2019 12:44

Just low carb instead

Saltisford · 07/08/2019 12:47

I go to a pay as you go Zumba class at a local school which I really enjoy. It’s £5 a session which obviously adds up but the benefit is that you don’t pay if you are on holiday or ill etc. I’ve paid monthly for gyms before and then ended up not going and losing out money wise (saying that you have a rolling contract which is good).

The other things I’ve found at gyms before is that the people come across a bit hardcore and cliquey - basically way fitter than me which gives me a complex lol!

WoogleCone · 07/08/2019 12:50

There are cheaper ones out there, I use xercise4less and you can use all their venues (I have a home gym and a different one i regularly use). Classes i included for £12.99. That was an offer though, DH signed up more recently and pays £16.99

thecatsthecats · 07/08/2019 13:10

Are the 'classes' at The Gym still just exercise videos run on a screen in a room?

I did really like it, but never bothered with those. The equipment was really top spec. Much more modern set up than Fitness First, which was horrible inside, and very old school in both pricing and membership structure.

I'm currently a member of Sports Direct for £25pm, including instructor led classes (without which it would be £20), and full use of the pool etc.

So £20pm doesn't seem 'too good to be true' - especially if those classes are just videos.

LettuceP · 07/08/2019 13:21

@HavelockVetinari I so wish there was a virgin active in my city, I could just about manage £50 but the local one to me that has all that is about £90 per month.
