new poster but long time lurker.

my porch glass door stuck and wont open despite key turning - took the facing plate off and tried to turn spindle with pliers but wont budge. had to run round garden and house to lock front door in the pissing rain.

totally broke this month so heart sinking at the cost of a locksmith. any ideas?

So you’re not locked in? You can get out via another door? Or how did you get out to lock the front door in the rain?

DontMessWithMyTootToot · 06/08/2019 23:04

i had to run through my garden, through the fence, go through next doors garden, round the side of their house, along the street, up my garden path, lock the main door and back again.. all in the pelting rain with an excited ladrador pup thinking it was a game of chase

You're obviously not "locked in the house alone" (as the thread title says) then are you?

Nicknacky · 06/08/2019 23:11

Have a look at it tomorrow in the daylight.

HappyHammy · 06/08/2019 23:11

are you locked inside the house? can you not get out if you want to?

TheBrockmans · 06/08/2019 23:13

Have you tried WD40? Spray liberally around it. Is it upvc? You can do some adjustment yourself if you Google it but locksmith far easier. Once open can you leave it unlocked if you have an inner front door?

ThePhoenixRises · 06/08/2019 23:13

Any windows at ground level you can climb out of?

Divebar · 06/08/2019 23:14

Has everyone else got adverts for bespoke doors and windows?

ElizaPancakes · 06/08/2019 23:15

Just leave the house two minutes earlier than normal until you can get it fixed?!

This is an inconvenience for sure but not something that is life or death.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/08/2019 23:16

Ok so if it’s the outside porch door leave it unlocked and lock the inner door.

Do you live in a terrace with no access to your back door?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 06/08/2019 23:16

But you aren't actually locked in as you can get out of the back. And how was a burglar going to get in at the front if its jammed anyway 😕

LuckyLou7 · 06/08/2019 23:18

But you're not locked in!!

A locksmith isn't that expensive. Can you borrow money from someone if you can't afford to get the front door fixed?

jeezerwheezer1974 · 06/08/2019 23:24

ask the locksmith to send you an invoice

TheBrockmans · 07/08/2019 05:38

Locksmiths coming on routine calls are no more expensive than say a plumber. It is an emergency locksmith who has to come out in the middle of the night because you are locked out etc which is so hideous. If you can book an appointment with a local well regarded one and then in the meantime either use the back door or if you can manage to open it and leave it unlocked if you have a second door it will be annoying but fine.

ElizaPancakes · 07/08/2019 13:44

@TheBrockmans if she can’t afford a locksmith it doesn’t matter that their cost will be on a par with a plumber Confused

bluegirlgreen · 07/08/2019 13:46

What a non-issue! Hmm

Pollypenguin01 · 07/08/2019 13:52

Are you hoping for a couple of quid OP? Grin

You might just have to leave the house a bit earlier than normal until next month when you can afford to get the door fixed.
I know it’s shit when you can’t afford to fix something that’s gone wrong but it’s not really serious as you can still get in/out and lock your door etc it’s just not ideal.

TheBrockmans · 07/08/2019 14:07

Yes ElizaPancakes but unless she can fix it herself she/he needs a locksmith at some point. I was just reassuring them that a regular non urgent call out charges is not as bad as she might expect. Alternatively if rented then this might be something the landlord should fix.

AquaPris · 07/08/2019 14:17

What on Earth - you're not locked in. If you can get out (even a long way round) then call a locksmith, ask for a quote and book them in for when you can afford it.

AngelasAshes · 07/08/2019 14:29

Just replace the lock on the door. It’s easy. Get a new one from Homebase for £6 or so.

TheMaddHugger · 07/08/2019 14:39

WD40 does wonders.

You're not actually Locked In

wine for all

LuckyLou7 · 07/08/2019 15:01

@MadHugger

That's my kinda glass of wine Wink

Get the lock fixed after payday OP, it doesn't sound as if it's a matter or urgency right now.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 07/08/2019 15:03

Um... why can you not lock/unlock front door from the inside? Being able/not able to get in and out of the back door has nothing to do with it...? Confused

Basketofkittens · 07/08/2019 15:08

You can change the lock yourself easily. Look on YouTube for a video.

KnickersandGnomes · 07/08/2019 15:15

Are you at all familiar with the expression 'Drama Llama' OP?
