It’s not what you eat, but how much. Calories in vs calories out based on your basal metabolic rate. Get an app like MyFitnessPal. As a rule, though, I’d focus on higher quantities of vegetables on my plate rather than starches or meat alternatives.

What do you eat normally? I don't eat meat and occasionally fish, but predominantly veggie. I don't eat pasta, rice or potato, other than maybe a spoonful if I fancy it. Other than that, I eat my protein bit (tofu, chickpeas, eggs, quorn etc) with extra veg.

Can you sub the carb element for veg?Things like cauliflower rice are popular or just have whatever veg you like. I think some of it is breaking with traditional accomplishments, burgers don’t have to go in buns and curry doesn’t have to be served with rice, just do it with cauliflower, broccoli or courgette.
Also, don’t cut the carbs in everything, for example, if the main part of the meal is veggie curry then actually a bit of rice won’t be too bad. But if it were a protein heavy ‘main’ cheese, tofu, egg based dish I’d probably just do it with veg.

I'm using mfp atm, I usually have Overnight oats or poached eggs and brown roast for breakfast, some sort of couscous salad for lunch then dinner can be anything from pasta to a stir fry ect I make everything from scratch never used processed foods if I can avoid it, I feel like my diet is very carb heavy but things like cauliflower rice are a good idea!

Actually thinking about it I don’t necessarily think in carbs, maybe you would find calorie counting easier.

Politicalacuityisathing · 06/08/2019 22:47

Pulses and variety of whole grains (not just wheat so spelt, buckwheat, rye etc). The Fast 800 books have loads of veggie recipes (or ones that are easy to adapt) and is very effective.

I was a vegetarian for 35 years before becoming a vegan over a year ago. I have always been between a size 8 and size 12. Being a size 8 involved keeping my calories below 1200 a day, plus lots of exercise. At size 12 I eat almost anything I like, but still do about an hour exercise every day.

I have tried low-carb diets for extended periods, but I didn't lose anything. It's calories that count, not carbs. I think low-carb diets are unhealthy, unnecessary, don't work (especially long-term) and make you feel terrible. Just aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of variety and eat smaller amounts and fewer calories to lose weight.

I went veggie for 3 years and put on 2 stone.
Have started eating (happy) meat again and reducing carbs and it’s slowly coming off again

Don't do what I did for a month and count cooked pasta calories based on the uncooked weight Blush

Other than that, protein will make you feel full. I've been most successful when having a hard boiled egg and half a sandwich for lunch, and lots of tofu-based stir fries with minimal noodles.

OneHanded · 06/08/2019 23:15

I’m vegan and eat very low carb naturally - it’s possible I promise! Perfect time of year for chilli/curries/stews with huge salads 🙈

BarbaraofSeville · 07/08/2019 07:02

If you were vegetarian wouldn't you be eating loads of veg and pulses, plus maybe eggs and quorn, so easy to lose weight on that sort of food with endless meal options?

Or are you the kind of vegetarian who doesn't eat vegetables and lives on cheese sandwiches and chips, because I know a few of those.
