Crossing road at Pedestrian Crossing

Justaboutdone · 06/08/2019 16:14

I don’t get why so many people with young children cross the road at a Pedestrian Crossing when it’s a Red Man.

Mines always know to press button and wait for green man. And then still make sure it’s safe to cross. Even when they were in a buggy we still made sure we waited for the green man.

They also know how to make sure road is clear when there is no pedestrian crossing.

Surely road safety is one of the most important things parents should be teaching so I don’t get why so many people ignore it to save a few seconds.

I have to admit if there’s no one around and the road is clear I feel like a bit of a tit waiting for the green man when I safely able to cross myself. However if there’s kids around, and when I’m with my DD I do always wait for the green man before crossing.

Pinkout · 06/08/2019 16:25

If there’s no one around I will go on a red man because it’s a total waste of my life to stand there like a dickhead waiting for it to turn green.

Justaboutdone · 06/08/2019 16:26

I go on red if road is clear and I am on my own.

And even if there was other people’s children around I may still go.

But when I am with my own kids, i’ll Always wait with them.

“They also know how to make sure road is clear when there is no pedestrian crossing.”

Why is this any different from doing so when there is a pedestrian crossing but the red man is showing?

Is there inherently something more unsafe about crossing on a red man, when you have made sure the road is clear, than doing them same when there is no pedestrian crossing?

PumpkinP · 06/08/2019 16:32

I go if there are no cars, having 4 children makes it more difficult to cross the road but I always feel abit silly standing there whilst everyone else is crossing.

CatInADoghouse · 06/08/2019 16:43

It's seems that using any kind of crossing now is a rarity. I've see so many adults and children just walking into the road any expecting cars to stop. It's horribly dangerous. Most of time there's some kind of a crossing not far up the road so there's no excuse for it. A lot of people really need to revisit the Highway Code!

adaline · 06/08/2019 16:46

They should be checking anyway regardless if the man is red or green.

If it's red and it's safe then why not cross with them?

Justaboutdone · 06/08/2019 17:06

If it's red and it's safe then why not cross with them?

Because if I do that I am saying to them it’s ok to cross on red.

I recall at high school we had a busy road outside the road that most children had to cross. There were quite a few knocked down.

I cross on a red man. I teach my children to cross when it’s clear not just because it’s a green man

Complete dickheads will run green men sometimes so I don’t pay any attention to it

CassianAndor · 06/08/2019 17:10

I teach DD to use her eyes, her judgement and properly assess. When she starts walking to school on her own next year she is going to have to cross a number of roads with no official crossing. So I don't just mindlessly wait for the red man, I look and assess at every crossing.

If the road is clear I and she will cross.

People jump red lights.

Noteventhebestdrummer · 06/08/2019 17:10

It's not a red man though.

It's a green or red person.

We say green walker and red stopper!

PickAChew · 06/08/2019 17:10

If I'm with DS1, we cross when it's clear, even if it's red.

If I'm with DS2, I always wait and say "green man!" when it's our turn to move. Difference is, DS2 is autistic, presenting with severe learning difficulties, so it's something I have to insist on being rule driven on.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 17:11

YANBU.

Mind you, we may have instilled this into DD a shade too well as she gets cross with me if, after having looked, I want to cross before getting the green man. She's 20. Grin

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 06/08/2019 17:14

If there are only adults at the crossing, I cross if it's safe to do so when the red man is showing. If there are children waiting, I always wait for the green man to show.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 06/08/2019 17:15

“Because if I do that I am saying to them it’s ok to cross on red.”

But why isn’t it ok to cross on red, if you’ve done the same checks as you would if there were no crossing at all?

adaline · 06/08/2019 17:42

But it is okay to cross on red if the road's clear.

The man being red or green doesn't mean it's unsafe/safe to cross. Only your eyes can tell you whether it's safe.

MyFokMarelize · 06/08/2019 17:54

So woke it's actually painful! Grin

EggysMom · 06/08/2019 17:58

I will stand there "like a dickhead" even if the road is clear, waiting for a green man. It means that I am in that habit and don't have to think about whether I have our son with us, or if other children are around to see. For me it's similar to indicating in the car at a road junction even if there is nobody around to see that I am indicating - I've removed a step of the thought process in what is routine activity.

Rainbowknickers · 06/08/2019 18:18

I drilled it into mine so hard about red/green man that one day I happened to be with my dad (no kids) and he went to step out on the red
I grabbed his hand out of sheer habit and yanked it back with the words
‘Red means stop!green means..oh sorry dad!’
I think he forgave me...

Rosemary7391 · 06/08/2019 19:30

Our crossings are broken a little too often for me to make it a habit to wait... Also doesn't help that they don't turn green at all the times in the cycle that it is safe to cross, and they're not smart enough to cut green lights short if there are no cars at them. So no, I'm not normally standing around in the cold/wet for them!

It gets easier if you practise!
