Sainsburys and allergens

My dh went into sainsburys today. He picked up some doughnuts that we've all had before, but he always checks ingredients as we have a ds with a serious nut allergy. Anyway they've changed the packaging and it lists all allergens, nut etc. on it. It also said to ask a member of staff for more information.
He went to speak to someone, and they said that as of last week they now have to say everything is in it.
AIBU to think this is very lazy of them? By ds wont beable to have any treats at this rate.

Of course they are going to cover their arses - that way they can't be sued.

Also makes packaging easier as they print the same on everything.

With all the fuss recently over allergens, anyone with any common sense could see how it was going to end up.

Surely it only says "may contain,"?

We were always told to ignore "may contain" warnings unless DS had had previous reactions (multiple allergies).

KindleAndCake · 06/08/2019 15:05

They used to list the allergens present but now it says evertrhkn is in it and they've been told to tell customers that too. Its crazy and lazy. My ds has gone from being able to eat a selection of bakery products to now not being able to eat any of them.

The actual ingredients won't have changed at all, so if you're still happy to feed your DS those snacks, you can regardless.

They put that on the labels to save on printing lots of different labels, and to cover themselves, like PP said. If they have the warning that it "may contain" all allergens, they can't get sued. I don't know what else you could expect them to do, really.

Sainsburys are a nightmare for allergens with loads of cross contamination.
Suggest coop for doughnuts as these only have gluten in :)

megletthesecond · 06/08/2019 15:08

Yanbu.
Lazy arse covering.

IHeartKingThistle · 06/08/2019 15:11

They changed all their ready meals and curries too - now they all say 'not suitable for those with nut allergies'. It's lazy in the extreme. They're just covering their backs legally, it's not about the consumer at all.

KindleAndCake · 03/10/2019 07:58

I absolutely agree, it is pure laziness.
