To think that being part time shouldn't affect your competence or chances of progression

Hopefully this won't be too outing.

Been back from maternity leave for a few months in a public sector role (not quite the same role but an equivalent). I work 29 hours a week across four days, two from home, it is the kind of job that you can easily do from home or office based. Home working is actually the norm for the majority of full time workers (1 or 2 days a week). But it helps me with childcare arrangements as well.

I had a meeting with a senior manager to discuss progress in the team and also the path to promotion. I was a bit surprised when the manager said that:

  • It could be expected that I wouldn't progress so quickly in the team as someone who is full time and who works more in the office (even though I do 50% in the office and most of my colleagues do 40%).
  • Promotion would be slower than for full time colleagues if you work 4 days a week.

Does everyone see the logic of this or does it seem vaguely off/discriminatory?
