To sew name labels into a year 7 child's uniform?

Nothingtowearatall · 05/08/2019 14:11

Ds goes into year 7 in Sept.

I've always sewn name labels into everything, he loses stuff, a lot.

I'm wondering if it will be seen as a bit babyish in secondary school?

Ds is fine with the labels, says what is more important, being able to find your stuff, or caring what people might think.

I use a laundry marker

SquirellTamer · 05/08/2019 14:12

My DD is starting Yr7 in September and I will definitely be sewing her name on labels. Its bloody expensive uniform!

UrsulaPandress · 05/08/2019 14:13

I used to sew in labels.

Comefromaway · 05/08/2019 14:13

I used a mixture of iron one labels and marker pen. I labelled EVERYTHING.

twilightcafe · 05/08/2019 14:14

I'm using sewn-in labels, name stamps and/or aundry markets. Secondary school uniform has cost me a fortune, so I want to maximise my chances of getting it back.

PumpkinPie2016 · 05/08/2019 14:14

Definitely put his name in things!

I teach in a secondary school and kids lose stuff all the time - unfortunately, most doesn't have a name in so it can't be returned to its owner.

Parents will often ring saying their child has lost something but without name labels, it becomes a bit needle in a haystack.

Add his form of you know it as well - that way, if there are several James Browns in school, it will get to the right one.

Clangus00 · 05/08/2019 14:14

I still would.

TeenTimesTwo · 05/08/2019 14:15

Well, it definitely needs to be named, and in such a way that one quick snip of scissors doesn't remove it.

If it isn't named, it hasn't a hope of being returned if left lying around or moved for a 'joke'.

ThisIsMyBuick · 05/08/2019 14:15

I did them in more discreet places. Inside the tie, on the side seam of the jumper and blazer. I also folded them over so it was just her surname and not so big.

User478 · 05/08/2019 14:15

Sew in or stick on.

Maybe don't get the labels with cutsie animals on though...

Nothingtowearatall · 05/08/2019 14:17

Thank you. Just to clarify, I definitely would label stuff either way, but I didn't know if the actual sew on ones would be seen as babyish. I asked if he wanted me to use marker pen instead but he didn't.

You definitely need labels.

megletthesecond · 05/08/2019 14:18

I used a laundry marker on the labels instead. I though labels might be cosindered babyish 🙄 at a bog standard comp.

WellTidy · 05/08/2019 14:18

I am sewing labels into everything for DS this week as he is starting Year 7. And I mean, everything. Sports socks, tie, swim shorts, the lot. The uniform list is super prescriptive, and the uniform is only available online, so its not like I can nip to the shop if he loses something that he desperately needs.

Having done preloved uniform sales at his primary school, I know that 80% of what is sold is un-labelled items that are just unclaimed for months. At least I/he will be able to identify what is his.

I've done iron on before and they fall off eventually, especially if things are tumble dried. I've also done marker and it fades or washes off. Sew in for me, despite the pain in the arse that it is.

Nothingtowearatall · 05/08/2019 14:19

Thisismybuik that's what I thought, sew them more discreetly.

I am more baffled why you all see labels in than just use the name stickers ! My sewing would never be good enough to sew 3 children’s uniform labels in.
Just get the stickers with no pictures of anything on

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 05/08/2019 14:22

DS1 is going into year 9 in september.

he still has everything labelled (mainly in pen, as it's too flipping expensive to keep buying him labels all the time).

nice big name labels, with dinosaurs, or choo choo trains on might be a good deterrent to losing stuff!

DD1 has just finished year 11. don't think we've labelled anything of hers since she was at infants - difference is, she doesn't lose stuff.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/08/2019 14:23

I don't bother now because he never loses clothing. It's a strange phenomenon and leaves me feeling he can't possibly be my child.

Littlebluebird123 · 05/08/2019 14:23

I use a stamper. Really quick, easy and doesn't wash off.

twilightcafe · 05/08/2019 14:27

Stick-ons and iron-ons always fall off.
I'm a good seamstress, so if I've sewn in a label, they are impossible to remove without ruining the garment.
If someone wants to steal something, at least I'll have the satisfaction of knowing they can't deface or remove the label Grin

YobaOljazUwaque · 05/08/2019 14:30

I wouldn't bother with sewing! We use these iron-on personal transfers. It's only the individual letters that iron on rather than having a heavy scratchy label that can sometimes too easily be peeled off. Get a set in black and a set in white so as to be able to use on both dark and light clothing. It's astonishing how quick and easy it is compared to tedious sewing.

I doubt anyone seriously thinks it's babyish to not want to lose your stuff, but if it's a problem you can iron on the label somewhere less obvious, like inside the sleeve, or in the turn of a hem.

Chakano · 05/08/2019 14:33

Mine is going into y11, and she labels everything. A bit different as a boarder, but her friends/parents don't all do it.

My kids used to lose stuff all the time. Then I made them pay for replacements and suddenly they stopped losing things.

One did lose a tie so went to lost property at school and picked the newest looking tie that was unnamed.

ODFOx · 05/08/2019 14:42

My youngest is about to go into Y10 and I still label everything incl tights and bras. You would not believe what goes missing at school.
I use a mix of labelling types. As long as you get it back surely it doesn't matter if its sewn in, ironed in or written on?
