To think Belfast is a dirty, stinking hole?

We were in Belfast yesterday.

Not for PRIDE, but we couldn't get back out because of the roads closed for the parade, so ended up staying much longer than expected.

I'm not local, but used to work in the city centre approx 10 years ago. It was buzzing constantly, dirty from smoggy buses, but good mix of shops, bars, places to eat etc. Not metropolitan, just respectably busy.

Yesterday, everything smelled like piss. The Deers Head has been bastardised with black gloss paint. Royal Avenue looks like something out of The Walking Dead, no Nationwide, Premier People, Argos, Subway, Alliance and Leicester, ALL gone. North Street actually looked more attractive than Royal Avenue!!

But oh my god, the smell of piss!! Everywhere!!

If we were showcasing our country yesterday for Belfast Pride, shouldn't someone have run round with a duster and Hoover first?

Is this a Stormont thing, or is it because everyone shops online? Is it because of the Primark fire, or did someone use Royal Ave for nuclear weapon testing? Pretend you're explaining to someone from outer space!! WTAF happened the town? How can we fix it?

When I think of all the cruise ships stopping here, and its revolting!! Its an embarrassment!! At the very least yesterday, the parade should have bypassed Royal Ave. I know the NI folk love a "traditional route", but you don't bring visitors into your house and give them tea in the bathroom, you usher them into the good room and shut the door an the messy ones!!

I don't know when the stench of piss will leave my nose, and my heart broke for the Writer's Square, weeds growing through it, no longer a sanctuary or an inspiration, just another grimy, neglected, waste.

Disclaimer, I know there are nice bits, but there is no point in making nice bits if you let the bits that WERE nice, turn into shitheaps. There are more shitheaps than before now.

Our son and his family moved to Belfast from London a couple of years ago, they have a far better quality of life and we love visiting them.

Pjsandbaileys · 04/08/2019 22:56

Belfast is a wonderful city, it's come so far in the last couple of decades! Quite odd to judge an entire city by one street (and by its lack of building societies), I only assume you are from a pristine metropolis, I do however suspect you are from the a provincial town and disappointed by your visit to the big smoke. Belfast like every other of the cities i have visited across Europe has its charms and run down areas. If you don't like it don't go back simple!!

peachgreen · 04/08/2019 23:43

What a load of auld shite on this thread. Belfast is a wonderful, vibrant city. Yes, it has problems, just like every other city. But it's still a fantastic place to live, work and visit. And the people in NI are the friendliest in the world.

Myshitisreal · 05/08/2019 00:10

YABU and very rude about my home town.

AdelaideK · 05/08/2019 00:17

YABU we had a lovely visit to Belfast earlier this year. I thought it was a great city.

DC did get upset about the lack of Alliance and Leicester but I managed to console them Wink

NoUsernamesILike · 05/08/2019 00:20

Your head was too far up your arse OP that's why you smelt piss Grin

PrincessPeach08 · 05/08/2019 00:39

What an odd and goady post. Quite insulted at your description of my home town. Can't say I've ever noticed the smell of piss.... Oh and if you are so concerned about nationwide no longer being facing castle court, there's one right at the end of royal avenue facing city hall, also if you go into castle court there is an argos, as well as the one in rosses court just round the corner and if you go to the food court in castle court there is a subway, hope this helps your dilemma 🙄

TeamLannister · 05/08/2019 00:44

Very strange post and you are beyond unreasonable. Belfast is a great city, not without problems but not a shithole by any means. Suspect the poster who suggested you might have pissed yourself is on to something...

SegregateMumBev · 05/08/2019 06:27

Atomic, lots of great eating places. I like Made in Belfast, my parents love Michael Deane's place behind City Hall, upstairs at Cafe Parisienne, and AM:PM.

Maggie Mays is on Botanic Avenue and also corner of Malone/ Stranmillis by the university, still does a great breakfast.

Egg · 05/08/2019 06:36

Wow. I went earlier this year and loved it. The shopping was brilliant compared to the U.K. city I live in. We had a great time and met so many lovely people. I also went 15 or so years ago and loved it then too.

Egg · 05/08/2019 06:37

And no smell of piss at all Confused

hopeishere · 05/08/2019 06:53

atomic your religion won't make a difference!

Try the premier inn on waring street or the Ramada encore on Talbot Street. Or the grand Central or The Flint.

chamenanged · 05/08/2019 07:08

Came for the mourning of Alliance and Leicester. Stayed for "maybe you pissed yourself OP?" Grin

newmomof1 · 05/08/2019 07:11

I went a few years ago and think it may actually be my favourite city. Beautiful place.

isabellerossignol · 05/08/2019 07:25

Also ideas to eat, somewhere nice. We like great restaurants so hoping we may get somewhere nice but slightly bargainous

There is an amazing Thai restaurant called the Bo Tree kitchen. It's BYO wine and is unbelievably good value. It's not in the city centre though, it's in the university area. Maybe 25 minutes walk from the city centre.

Yugo in the city centre is an Asian fusion restaurant and it's some of the nicest food I've ever eaten.

I also really like The Lantern.

CherylStreep · 05/08/2019 07:26

YABU. As someone said upthread it's like judging Dublin based on the state of O'Connell St (and/or the quays). I was in Belfast last year (from ROI) and thought it was lovely - lots to see and do, etc.

thecatsthecats · 05/08/2019 10:17

I travel a LOT, and Belfast stood out to me as one of the friendliest most welcoming cities I have been too. Really lovely people who really wanted us to enjoy their city - the taxi driver gave us an impromptu tour of where to see the next day. We had a great time there.

And it didn't smell of piss.

Frankly OP, you sound like one of those has beens who doesn't know where's good any more.

Pud2 · 05/08/2019 10:23

Belfast is a fantastic city

Piglet89 · 05/08/2019 10:24

Hahaha because London (for example) is spotless.

There are A LOT fewer unpleasant dicks in Belfast than in London as well, OP. If my job didn’t tie me to London, I would seriously consider moving back home.

MadisonAvenue · 05/08/2019 10:27

@thecatsthecats That was exactly how we found the people too.

@atomicnotsoblonde DH's fave is The Flint. theflintbelfast.com/

We keep meaning to go for a weekend away and haven't managed it yet but I had on my list: trip out to Giants Causeway, seeing the Belfast Giants ice hockey team (not a sports person but looks like a fun night out), and the 'troubles' walking tour. My great grandfather was in the IRA Blush but at the turn of the century and in ROI, and I know so little about it.

The hop on hop off bus looks fab value for seeing things like the peace wall and parliament buildings.

I'm looking at stopping at malmaisson or the AC by the harbour. Which area us best to stop? Ideally we'd like to be able to walk around the city/use taxis but we won't have a car.

Thanks for the restaurant reccs!
