to be going loopy trying to choose a new washing machine?

My washing machine has just died and won't spin and the repairman says it's not worth fixing it. It was an 8 year old Hoover with a great 1400 spin on all the cycles I used.

So I've been looking through a million different machines and just getting confused.

I want something 6-10kg capacity, minimum 1400 spin (that is on as many programmes as possible) where the 30/40 degree cycle doesn't take 4 hours.

Any recommendations? I have to dry things indoors without a tumble drier (live in a flat) so having a high spin is really important to me so that I don't have to have the heated airer on for too long.

Any recommendations? I have a budget of up to £400.

Another vote for Bosch here.

My Indesit is in its seventh year and still going strong. Miraculous really because it was cheap as chips.

Whatever you choose, buy it from ao.com. Their customer service is as good as it can possibly be. And, no, I don’t work for them.

JangledBat · 04/08/2019 16:01

@Theinebriati can you not just buy one with with a built in timer?

sammi0805 · 04/08/2019 16:03

If you look on the AO website you can filter to just look at those with 1400+ spin cycles I think. We got ours from their and filtered to look for a large drum.

Miele spin is excellent and very fast wash times the bonus is they last for about 15 years so you won’t be replacing anytime soon.

iloveredwine · 04/08/2019 16:05

I wouldn't get a Samsung either. mine went wrong 3 times in first 3 months. I replaced it with an LG direct drive and it's amazing.

Lots of votes for Bosch!

Thanks for your recommendations. You've all been very helpful. Really helps cut through all of the models and reviews just to get a personal recommendation from people.

I’ve only had three washing machines in 40 years of home ownership. The latest one, 3 years ago! Lasting 8 years is awful! My previous ones were AEG and Siemens. Current one is a Miele. I would always buy a decent make and expect it to last 15 years. I’m sure my Miele will manage that! It’s very solid! For your money, Bosch would be the way to go though.

I have a Hotpoint 9kg one and find it works really well. It has a 30 minute quick wash at 30 degrees, a fast wash 1 hour where you can change the temp and the normal wash is 2h55m long with various different options. This is my second Hotpoint and the last one lasted over 10 years.

I subscribe to Which for this very reason. If you tell me what you "need" in a washing machine, I can give you their Best Buys in your price range. Smile

I am very happy with my Samsung eco bubble. I use pods, not had any problems. I also love the jaunty tune at the end, I may have made up lyrics which I sing when I hear it....

I have recently been whiling away my life by reading the instructions for my new washer dryer, in huge letters under General Safety it says

CAUTION: The appliance must not be supplied through an external switching device, such as a timer,or connected to a circuit that is regularly switched on and off by a utility.

I don't know what the second bit means (does anyone?) but the first part is clear.

Many machines I looked at seem to have an optional delay function so you load it up and let it switch on when you want. It, like a timer........

My machine died this morning. Well shall we say even if it's not dead it needs putting down. It was making the most terrible and alarming noises on the spin cycle and flinging itself around the utility so when it stopped I decided never to use it again.

I had a new one ordered within about 20 minutes. I have bought one of these [[https://ao.com/product/wmfug1063p-hotpoint-washing-machine-white-65437-1.aspx Hotpoint]

TBH the only research I did was go to the ao site, filter on free standing and large and chose the one ranked most popular. Sounds alright and it's 1600rpm. £299 plus another £45 for them to disconnect and take away the old one and fit the new one. AO delivering it next week.

We bought a Bosch one a few months back and I’m happy with it. You can halve the wash time for a smaller load which I like.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/08/2019 17:24

I bought this AEG machine a month or two ago and am very happy with it.

It weighs the load and shortens the cycle if not full. Standard 40 wash says about 3 hours but if it's half full this comes down to less than 1.5 hours.

TheInebriati · 04/08/2019 18:09

Thanks viques, apparently washing machines are a massive fire hazard and shouldn't be left on when you are out or asleep.

Jarstastic · 04/08/2019 18:19

"I'm looking for a washing machine with a manual switch not an electronic switch, so I can use it with a timer. This feature isn't listed on any of the specs and no one knows what I am talking about."

Just start it, then immediately click the clicky thing on the timer.

userxx · 04/08/2019 18:29

I've got a Beko, it's a 1600 spin and the everyday 30 degree wash takes 39 minutes. It's got time delay which is really useful too.

TheInebriati · 04/08/2019 18:40

Jarstastic If I do that on mine it won't restart. It just drains and stops the program.

VictoriaBun · 04/08/2019 18:45

I've had my Siemens one for at least 12/14 years, we've moved twice in that time as well, so it's well travelled I hope I haven't jinxed it

alittlebitdemented · 04/08/2019 19:11

@MindDisco

My apologies. I should have read your initial post in more detail.

This is Which's Best Buys up to £400 with a capacity of 6/7/8/9kg and a spin of 1400/1600.
