The political right, everything from the Tories to Tommy Robinson supporters, generally seem to regard themselves as patriotic.

Why?

They object to the BBC, the NHS, most of the public sector, saving the environment (as in the country itself)....

These are to me, some of the pillars of the UK.

It just seems like a bit of a double-think.

Tommy Robinson objects to anyone who isn't white.

The Tories haven't a clue what they do and don't object to as long as their pockets are lined and they're in a position of power.

Farage? Hell I don't think he knows what he wants. Apart from Brexit.

TanMateix · 03/08/2019 15:52

Race, just race. But they will make exceptions when there is money involved (or sex, if we get to count how many open racists are not meant to be racists because they married an immigrant)

InTheHeatofLisbon · 03/08/2019 16:07

Incidentally I'm not right leaning at all (been called a lefty loony more than once on here) and I object to the BBC for a few reasons.

Their partisan lies after Indy ref about yes voters rioting when it was, in fact, No supporting football hooligans (rather than actual No voters). The lies with regards to Indy in general pissed me off.

The treatment of Scotland, NI and Wales as an irrelevance as standard. Sport especially it's England England England even when the other countries are involved

The forced payment of £100+ a year, whether you use the service or not.

The gender pay gap.

Oh and the not insignificant matter of covering up prolific paedophilia within their own organisation for a generation and refusal to accept responsibility for it.

Chloemol · 03/08/2019 17:20

And what do the political left bring to the table/ are proud off. In my opinion they are as bad as each other

gobbyone · 03/08/2019 18:00

The NHS, funding the public sector, saving the environment...

BogglesGoggles · 03/08/2019 18:02

Well the NHS andthe BBC seem to be among the worst elements of British society but the Tories and alt right Brits seem to have drunk the kool aid along with the rest of the population.

BogglesGoggles · 03/08/2019 18:05

@InTheHeatofLisbon Farage seems to be pro NHS at least - he threw someone out of UKIP over it back in the day if I remember correctly.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 03/08/2019 18:11

BogglesGoggles a quick Google says different I'm afraid. He's flip flopped from one extreme to the other over the last 15 years. Seems to say what will get him support in any given situation.b

TemporaryPermanent · 03/08/2019 18:18

I'm not politically right wing but have some right wing instincts (the two go together; I don't want the country governed according to my instincts).

Right wingers of my acquaintance are potentially proud of -
The armed forces
The Queen and to some extent the royal family as symbols of peaceful continuity
Parliamentary democracy, as long as this doesn't result in left wing decisions
Victoria sponge
Queuing, as long as they're not behind someone who speaks another language
Being from an island

Justanotherlurker · 03/08/2019 18:44

Proof that the astroturfing is being done by interns.

It is currently the "left" who have a problem with the BBC as they are allowing Bannon to be aired, apparently are pro brexit and have a problem with Farage being on question time more than the green party to name a few.

It is also not the "right" who are generally trying to pretend everyone other than British have no culture, it's not the right quoting Orwell when it suits and selectively quoting him.

But to address your weak points, the BBC should face criticism it is a monolith and public body, it doesn't make it a right wing process to attack it, see my previous point.

As for the NHS, it has cross party support that it needs some kind of reform, the issue is that it is used as political football so nothing will get done, which is exactly what you are doing and will ultimately help in its demise.

"Most of the public sector" bit of a broad brush and shows you are not really making a statement in good faith or actual knowledge

saving the environment (as in the country itself)....

There has been a massive uptick in windfarms because of the tory goverment subsidies, it isn't the "right" generally speaking who are against nuclear power, which is considered the most effective green energy to sustain our current lifestyles

Bloke23 · 03/08/2019 19:01

I suppose I am right wing, I don't vote tho, bar the BBC in your original post I dont object to any of the things you mention, I love the NHS, it has been fantastic for me and my family, my partner also works for the NHS so know many of the struggles that face frontline staff!

We try and do anything we can to help the environment, for instance we swapped from buying milk from stores in plastic bottles to going to the milkman for glass bottles! We have reduced our use of palm oil by about 50% (its bloody hard as it's in shitloads of stuff)

gobbyone · 03/08/2019 20:06

@Bloke23

Genuine question; how can you consider yourself to be right wing and support the NHS? Surely it's the most lefty thing we have? Literally, socialism in action?

@Justanotherlurker

I think we have very different perceptions of what constitutes left and right. I actually think that the BBC is pretty balanced- it shows a lot of different views. Fine by me.

And the left pretending that the British have no culture? Go to any university, museum, art gallery, library, theatre, music venue, community centre (the places where British culture is preserved, studied and renewed) and see how the staff lean politically... it's generally not to the right.

Nuclear power is great- until it isn't.

I take issue with the comment on energy.

The Tories destroyed onshore wind. Because of objections from Tory voters and wealthy landowners. Onshore wind was the most cost effective renewable. Hardly any development in recent years because of Tory policy.

Offshore wind is thriving despite the Tories.

Nobody who understands the cost of electricity sees nuclear as a cost effective option. It's supported by the right because it props up military nuclear and follows a more conventional solution. Plus if it's not renewable energy (see onshore wind above).
