Just starting a nosy thread as I'm in pain and can't sleep...

Just been reading a story about a woman who was discriminated against because of her pregnancy was awarded £25k in compensation!

Curious to know if you've ever sued anyone and won? What was it for and how much? It's a very personal question I know, if you don't like it, don't answer.

I once had the opportunity to sue a former landlord but never did. Regret it now!

Yep. For sex discrimination, breach of contract and constructive dismissal following maternity leave. I won 14K about 20 years ago. Best/most difficult thing I have ever done

I was “made redundant” first morning back after maternity leave. I went to a solicitor, and we took them to a tribunal, but they paid out the week before the tribunal date. 1year’s salary, the first chunk of which was tax free.
They were trying to sell the business at the time and didn’t want any outstanding law suits or bad publicity.
It took almost a year & was very stressful.

Yes someone had their dog off a lead that suddenly with no warning ran in front of my car writing it off - sent them several pages of all the laws broken having the dog off the lead in a public place and then sued for cost of car

Sibling had a life threatening mis-diagnosis on the NHS. This went on for many previous months despite their repeated attempts to get it investigated properly. After eventual diagnosis surgery was scheduled within 24hrs. They looked into legal advice (to prevent future bad practise), and were assured of a min potential 100k+ payout. They didn't take it further than an apology, as the NHS is already financially crippled and they were glad the issue had been resolved. I know two other people who were falsely diagnosed as short lived terminal diseases. One got a big pay out and the other was just happy to have the extra time given back.

25K for victimisation (as per the law) in a case involving disability discrimination due to ill health from bullying.

They paid out to avoid going to a full hearing due to the victimisation as the victimisation was pointed out by the judge in a preliminary hearing.

Unite, who I hadn't long joined, and a few other random people helped in preparing the case and coming to meetings.

Oh and it was nearly 20 years ago.

In my family it's happened a few times.

I didnt sue but got a lot of money from a shoe chain. My dd tried on a pair of boots that came half way up her calf. There was a sharp nail on the inside of the boot. She zipped up the boot and started screaming. In zipped it and the nail was in her leg. Bled everywhere. Hospital visit and a few stitches later they contacted me.

My uncle was involved in an accident at work that nearly cost him his sight.

I got back part of what I paid for my house when I moved on and there were lots of things wrong with the house that they hadnt declared. Like the front door wasnt secure. The windows let in water and cold air. The boiler was checked by a friend and given the all clear and had a severe problem. It took my solicitor threatening to sue the gas engineer friend before I got it back. Enough for new boiler and new windows and doors and a bit left over.

I did as part of an accident I was involved in. I was the only one injured despite being on public transport (broke a bone) because some bellend jumped a very clear set of red lights and caused our vehicle to emergency brake causing broken bone.
Was off work for about 2months because of it, it caused permanent nerve damage too.

My main priority was ensuring cctv caught him, and having the police prosecute him for it. It did and they did.
I didn’t get a lot, but was very happy that he got done for driving without due care and handed a massive fine and points on his license.
My work also claimed for money they’d paid me whilst off sick because had they not jumped the reds I’d not have had all that time off on full pay!

Cotswoldcapers · 03/08/2019 08:52

Yes - but they settled before we got too far. It was actually disability and gender discrimination. Large settlement but that was almost secondary - organisations should not get away with discrimination or act complicity by allowing managers to discriminate.

Friends baby passed away at 4 days old due to hospital negligence. The husbands company paid solicitors as he was in a type of union. Don’t know how much they received but three bought 3 large detatched houses that they rent out. Different friend years ago tripped over a cat and broke his back. Hospital didn’t find break and he kept collapsing. He then collapsed down the stairs and broke his back in a few more places. Ended up in wheelchair and despite suing NHS for years got nothing. He couldn’t even pick up his own child

fleshmarketclose · 03/08/2019 10:19

Local Authority offered £3k for failing to make provision for my child who was unable to attend school due to ill health. I have taken complaint to LGO instead not because I expect to receive more (in fact I will most likely receive less) but because I want our Local Authority's failings exposed.
Currently pursuing second complaint regarding failure to hold Annual Review, again I expect LA to make an offer and again I will pursue to LGO instead because LGO ruling will mean more than the money would.
When the second complaint is with LGO i will make a third complaint knowing that OFSTED will be interested in the complaints that get to LGO and having LA under scrutiny will be my reward.

My Dad got £80k for a work accident. The company knew of the issue but didn't fix it. It took about 5 years. He was disabled for life. They originally offered £10k but eventually offered the £80k the day before the court hearing.

My SIL claimed for her DS. The hospital made mistakes when he was born causing brain damage. They got £170k. He will need lifelong care.

A neighbour got £5k for breaking her arm. She fell over a broken paving slab. The council should have fixed it.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 03/08/2019 11:17

I got several thousands of pounds after an accident which left me permanent facial scarring.
