AIBU To not force my DS to go out

DS currently 18 and awaiting A-level results is currently in his room gaming and not going out. He is very shy and naturally reclusive. He does have friends but doesn't often see them outside College. My parents are applying pressure on me to force him to go out. I feel that he is entitled to choose how he spends his leisure time. I'm not sure you can force someone into being sociable. It's just who he is. AIBU?

I wouldn't be happy if my 18 year old didn't ever go out and was gaming all day. I'd expect them to have a job too at this stage and help with chores (ie shopping).

I think that DS thinks that retakes for his A Levels are almost inevitable so it will most likely be another year at College sprucing up grades. He has also applied to do another AS Level at College this coming academic year to improve his chances of getting on the course he wants to do.

RachelEllenR I'm not overjoyed that he won't go out. I would do much rather he did. I wouldn't be happy leading his lifestyle but he is s totally different character to me.

He is at the stage when he will be able to decide what he does and when and at Uni would have freedom to game all night!!!!. Does he join you for meals, movie nights etc? The gym is a good suggestion and doing some cooking and lifeskills training! Climbing if there is a local climbing centre seems to appeal to more introverted young people as well as extroverts.

I’d insist that he gets out of the house at least once a day, even if it’s just to pop to the shops and get a pint of milk, and to get a summer job. Otherwise, he’s an adult and if it’s his nature to be solitary, that’s his own business.
