to wish people wouldn't squeeze the bloody bread?

Why, oh why, do people have to squeeze 6 loaves of bread in the supermarket before deciding that the first one was appropriately squishy?!

I'm well aware about 50% of posters on here will have a very 'valid' reason for doing so (they'll pretend they're testing the freshness) but realistically we all know there's no real logic to it 😂

Erghh I agree
I'm not a clean freak but I never buy the loose bakery stuff after watching people maul it in the past

abitoflight · 02/08/2019 12:39

Oh sorry - you meant stuff in bags??

7sunnysundays · 02/08/2019 12:39

When I worked on the checkouts as a student and a customer was rude I used to squeeze their bread really hard as I packed their shopping 😂

7sunnysundays · 02/08/2019 12:40

I'd also pack their eggs under heavy tins 😁

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2019 12:42

Yes, i have always wondered what the bread squishing was about. It's all the same in terms of squishiness surely?

But saying that DH has been known to sniff a melon so what do I know? Grin

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 02/08/2019 12:42

I can't buy loose stuff because people sneeze and cough and flob all over the place... but I'm not too fussed about bread squeezing. Although I don't do it because I don't know what I'm feeling for Grin

Esssa · 02/08/2019 12:43

Because I'm not buying the one that already feels like a brick and half stale? Though I agree it should be kept to a minimum and done gently to not damage the loaf you don't want. I do try to go on use by dates but have found bread 2 days old that feels fresher than newer stuff. So sorry yabu.

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2019 12:44

I went into Lidl for some loose morning rolls. I wanted two but they seem to be stuck together in lumps of 6. I didn't know the etiquette for separation using just some tongs so I bought all 6. Blush

Picklypickles · 02/08/2019 12:45

I've never squeezed a loaf of bread but I do have a quick poke of the fresh bakery loaves to see if any are still warm!

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 12:46

You can tell how fresh it is by giving it a little squeeze.

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2019 12:48

Tell us about the levels of squishiness, someone who does the bread squishing/squeezing.
I have never had a problem with pre packed bread.

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 12:49

If the loaf gives a lot it’s fresh if it doesn’t I root about at the back for one that is.

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2019 12:51

So it's all to do with the 'give' even though it's not a big enough squeeze to damage the loaf.
It sounds quite technical.

StoatofDisarray · 02/08/2019 12:54

I squeeze bread I haven't seen before in the hope that it's a solid, properly proved loaf, not artificially proved by the Chorleywood process as the majority of breads are. I'm looking for the opposite of squish. Maybe some of the squeezers are like me.

Sparklingbrook · 02/08/2019 12:54

But only packaged bread-right? Not unwrapped stuff?

Allthef3els1 · 02/08/2019 12:59

@Sparklingbrook tell your do you need to tap that melon lol 😂

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 13:11

Yep! There’s a knack to it, I’ve perfected it to a tee.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/08/2019 13:12

I look at the little bit of tape on the bread to see the date, and do not buy unwrapped bread as I prefer mine snot free.

I knock melons with my knuckles, you need to have it near your ear so get some odd looks.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 02/08/2019 13:14

Tell the supermarket to stop selling us half stake loaves that could build walls and then I'll stop gently squeezing the bread.

Cohle · 02/08/2019 13:14

It's wildly selfish.

I had not realised until this moment how passionately I feel about this Grin

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 02/08/2019 13:15

Stale not stake obviously

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 13:18

It's wildly selfish

Grin

Honestly you wouldn’t know I’ve squeezed it I promise.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 02/08/2019 13:21

How is it selfish? It's responsible shopping Wink
If all customers left the stale shit on the shelves then supermarkets would stop selling it and provide proper fresh bread!
If I've squeezed a loaf and rejected it, trust me, you don't want to be buying it either!

campion · 02/08/2019 13:28

Totally mouldy bread will still feel soft in a sealed plastic packaging.

Sniffing melons isn't so daft - ripe melons smell like cats pee. Fortunately they don't taste that way,as far as I know,

Cohle · 02/08/2019 13:30

You don't realise your bread has been squished by some bastard until you unwrap it at home and it's got their sweaty little hand prints squashing half the loaf into hideous cement glue.
