Where can I live - Nottinghamshire?

I've posted on here a couple of times and found the advice to be the first-rate compared to many other forums. I've been through the local boards etc and the lack of traffic means that the replies are a bit dated.

I'm looking at moving back to England (hopefully, in about 3 months) and need to be near Nottinghamshire for work. The problem is that I have never been there and have no idea about the cities, towns or villages.

I'd prefer somewhere quiet, 3-4 bed, garden with about £280k budget and with easy transport links to a city centre. I know it's a bit of an ask but any advice on area would be greatly appreciated.

Which part do you need to be near, its huge...

ZeroToleranceLeft · 02/08/2019 10:09

Anywhere to be fair, there's going to be a lot of working from home and minimal daily travelling. Ideally somewhere within 30 minutes of Nottingham.

Rather depends where you will be working as the city is large and congested unless you can use trams. What other local features are you after? Maybe look in the area of A52 towards Grantham and A46 to Southwell/Newark or towards Derby if not in the city itself.,

Hi OP, native Notts girl here.

Ruddington is very nice, has a villagey vibe and you can drive to the city centre in about 20 minutes, regular quick transport links too. Good schools if you need them and houses are within your budget.

Bingham and Radcliffe on Trent are a little further out but buses get to town in 30 mins or so, Bingham is a bit more expensive but you should get a house in your budget, more likely a 3 bed. Was voted best place to raise a family a few years ago, again it has OFSTED outstanding schools, but it is growing quickly so school places are getting difficult to come by.

North of the river there’s Beeston, Chilwell and Mapperly which will get you more house for your money.

Hope this helps Smile

Sherwood is ten minutes from the city and a great community within itself. There are regular buses and decent schools too.

There are some beautiful villages but you'll get far less for your money and fewer transport options. Linby, Papplewick, Lambley, Burton Joyce and Lowdham are worth a look.

WombatStewForTea · 02/08/2019 10:19

I moved out a while ago but I'd go Wollaston or Bramcote

Emotionalfuckwittake2 · 02/08/2019 10:29

I live in gedling which is about 20 minutes from town which is nice. Lambley, Mapperely, Burton Joyce are all nice. Wolloton and west bridgford are also nice parts of town

NoBaggyPants · 02/08/2019 10:29

Wollaton, not Wollaston!

The villages I suggested are all too high for your budget I'm afraid, prices have risen far more than I realised. Sherwood is still a good option though.

Most of the areas suggested neighbour on to not do nice areas, so best to post up anything of interest and people can suggest if it's really in the area, or the estate agent's generous interpretation of it!

ZeroToleranceLeft · 02/08/2019 10:37

Thanks for all the replies, I'll spend the morning on Right Move and post some properties in a bit.

I think I’d look for somewhere on the tram line.

www.thetram.net/

I do live in Nottinghamshire which is why I clicked on the thread but I’ve also moved to a city that I’ve never been to and had no knowledge of whatsoever. It’s really difficult to narrow down even an area and of course people always suggest the best areas. The equivalent of saying ‘move to Chelsea ‘ if you wanted to move to london.

What we did is looked at how we were going to get to our job, as you have to start somewhere, and looked at places on the transport links.

The traffic into Nottingham itself is awful and I’d rather get the tram than the bus. There are big park and rides too.

Where I live, you can get to a park and ride in ten minutes in the car and then it’s 20 minutes to Market Square. You can get a 3-4 bedroom house where I am in your budget.

katewhinesalot · 02/08/2019 10:41

Second wollaton, beeston areas

Cloudtree · 02/08/2019 10:41

You can't go very far out if you want to be in Nottingham in half an hour. The routes into the city are limited and the traffic is bad.

footchewer · 02/08/2019 10:47

I'm reading between the lines of the OP and my impression is that you're after somewhere 'quiet', ie. rural but not remote? If so then the Southwell + surrounding villages area is lovely.

Personally I'd say Beeston wouldn't spring to mind if you're looking for somewhere quiet, but it's great for students. Chilwell and Mapperly are suburbs of Nottingham, not towns if that's relevant.

The places everyone in Nottingham city would live if they could afford it are The Park and West Bridgford (actually Ruddington is a sort-of Outer West Bridgford Overflow on the very outskirts of the city).

footchewer · 02/08/2019 10:51

"The places everyone in Nottingham city would live if they could afford it a"

Ahem, I meant something like 'where I would live if I could afford it' !!

decisionsindecisions · 02/08/2019 10:57

I would look at Toton or Attenborough

decisionsindecisions · 02/08/2019 10:58

Or even Sawley. Sawley is technically in Derbyshire but has a train station and regular buses into Nottingham

Cloudtree · 02/08/2019 11:00

PIL have just had their house valued in Chilwell standard 4 bed (although 4th bed is very small) link detached 1960s/early70s build valued at £295k

Cloudtree · 02/08/2019 11:03

But the road from sawley through long eaton to nottingham is dreadful meaning you would need to leave the house before 7.30 to get into nottingham for 8.30 in the mornings.

WombatStewForTea · 02/08/2019 11:41

Oops I meant Wollaton! Phone autocorrected clearly been living up north where there is a Wollaston!

I second Attenborough as well and agree with @footchewer that The Park is lovely. I grew up in Chilwell I can't believe house prices have gone up that much!

Toton, Long Eaton, Sherwood are all good options as PP have mentioned.

Mapperley top is quite nice too.

I live in Clifton and love it here, I’ve recently discovered it has a bit of a bad reputation though I don’t understand why. Excellent travel/shopping amenities. Large but rural enough. Can usually get to the city centre by tram in 40 minutes maximum. Clifton Village has a more ‘upmarket’ vibe but not sure about the house prices there.
