Potty training and diarrhea

Hi, we are at the early stages of trying to potty train our 3 year old ds.

Its not exactly going great, he will happily sit on the toilet but hasn't done anything in there yet, he just says he is finished and gets down.

He is just doing everything in his pants as if he were wearing a nappy. Sigh.

But were staying strong and calm and trying to push through it.

Yeaterday he has been a bit off and his stools have been very loose, very unpleasant to be cleaning up, for him and me. I'm not sure if he has a tummy bug.

So AIBU to just put nappies on him today, or until he is well just to make it less stressful for everyone.

I don't want to send him mixed signals about the nappies though, I really wanted to go cold turkey (apart from night time) and get him using the toilet .

Any advice here very much appreciated. Xx

Tricky one. I think I would put him back in nappies and tell him it's because he is poorly. I would do this with my 2.5 year old if she had diarrhoea even though shes been potty trained for months.

Pullups will be fine.

I would say all bets are off if he has diahorrea and stop just stop the potty training if he is ill. It’s just not the same as ‘normal’ potty training.
I’d completely stop it, not mention it and start again in 7-10 days when he’s better.

NuffingChora · 02/08/2019 08:54

Agree let this illness pass, but then when it comes to starting again - no pants! Completely bare bottom half for at least the first day or two, then loose trousers, then finally pants when he’s showing awareness and control. Pants give a similar sensation to having a nappy on so reduce the impetus to use the potty.

NoSauce · 02/08/2019 08:56

Definitely keep the nappy on till he’s better.

Laiste · 02/08/2019 08:56

Yep, nappies back on till he's better. Potty training needs to be done under the best circs possible. ie: summer time if poss, and child happy and well.

Go back to it in a couple of weeks.

If it's any help we have the potty on a disposable changing mat in the middle of the living room for the first week of potty training. Devote your day week? to catching a wee in the potty and go WILD with stupidly over the top praise with dancing about and singing and clapping and perhaps a treat :) They'll want to repeat it. That's my best tip. Got 4 DCs. I've always waited till 3 as well.

Let the illness pass and then when you go back to it remove pants completely. Have a look at Oh Crap potty training.

Laiste · 02/08/2019 08:57

Oh and yes to nude bottom half around the house and take the potty to every room with you.

That's why i do it in the summer.

lizzlebizzle33 · 02/08/2019 09:23

Thank you everyone, yep the nappies went back on this morning, and oh boy am I glad i did that!! I woukd be scrubbing about 6 pairs of pants and my living room carpet right now if I hadn't 😐

I never thought about going bottomless at home, I guess the underpants must be confusing for him, maybe he feels safe in them like a nappy. So thank you for that, will give it a try next week.x
