I remember it too.

Try youtube, I've found loads of brilliant stuff from the 60s and 70s there.

Hepzibar · 01/08/2019 22:16

I remember this vividly, I was a young teen and was glued.

Think it was one of the first 'mega-series', The Thorn Birds being another.

My favourite was Testimony of Two Men, I loved this, read the book countless times afterwards. Jonathan Ferrier "Hell, tell them my heart breaks for them", will never forget that.

Hepzibar I still have my copy of the novel of "Testimony of Two Men". I loved the tv show, and also "Captains and the Kings". I was a huge fan of Taylor Caldwell's novels. Now largely forgotten I think and out of print. A real shame.

There are so many terrific things from the 60s and 70s on youtube.

Starbucks Captains and Kings! Just checked and it's available on Kindle for £10! Testimony of Two men same £10.

I regret getting rid if my dog- eared copy, read over and again in my teens

Oh I loved this. Made a huge impact on me at an impressionable age, but it’s not until just now that I realised that Hugo Weaving, who I always think of as Aussie, plays our hero Jardine.

murasaki · 02/08/2019 22:49

I took DP to Trent Bridge last year, and the guys at the bar all assumed that he was the cricket fan, as I am but a simple woman - that got nixed when they said we should meet at the Larwood and Voce at lunchtime the next day, and I said 'ah the 32 bodyline bowlers'. Got more respect after that. Himself couldn't tell a doosra from a yorker.

Great series of cricket din't realise there was a filmed version.

Apollo440 · 02/08/2019 23:07

Ah yes Hugo Weaving played the English captain Douglas Jardine and everytime Larwood hit an aussie batsman he'd say (in a plummy English accent) 'Well bowled Harold'. The aussies do like a good English villain. To any aussies reading this.. tough luck. We beat you. Stop whinging 😄. However, the worst historical inaccuracy was the portrayal of Bradman. The handsome chap who played him couldn't look any less like him. The Don was undoubtedly the greatest batsman ever but he wouldn't win any beauty pageants.

Yes, I remember the series; really good though cricket bored me to tears and merely something that my dad had on in the afternoon when the rest of the family would retreat to the kitchen, including my mother, the only English person.

Having a quick look at that first episode a PP posted, the opening titles seem awfully Chariots of Fire-ish. I really should remember which came out first but very 80s.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 03/08/2019 00:02

FrancisCrawford oh I loved them both too! And I had both the books.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 03/08/2019 00:03

I've got the collection of cigarette cards from the series, not sure whether the notoriety makes them worth anything or not but they are a talking point (I am from York's so cricket is a lifeblood)

themmatricc · 03/08/2019 00:29

yes the series that the australians started moaning and haven't stopped since the cable they sent was disgrace as far as im concerned jardine the best england captain in any sport ever

RodGallowglass · 03/08/2019 00:48

LadyRannaldini Me too. Took a few posts to realise posters were talking about a TV programme.

elliollie · 03/08/2019 01:14

Ahhh I remember watching this in my Nan's back room. I loved Gary Sweet! I think I'm going to have to rewatch it now.

Skinidin · 03/08/2019 01:22

Hell yes!

It's all on Youtube.

It's important to realise that they were not playing illegally, the Aussies just didn't like being beaten.

Nothing in the attack then was anything like as threatening as that of, say, the West Indies in the 80's.

JassyRadlett · 03/08/2019 20:29

You sound about as lovely as Jardine.

BitOfFun · 03/08/2019 23:42

I remember this so, so well! I loved it. And it's come in handy many a time in pub quizzes, when people boggle at my ability to apparently recall obscure cricket trivia Grin.
