We will be in Scotland during the holidays and we’re now thinking of travelling by ferry to Belfast
What is the best company and route to go from your experience Thanks ...

You can get very cheap day returns (£5pp) if travelling as a foot passenger Tuesday to Thursday on the 7.30am crossing.

frenchknitting · 01/08/2019 21:24

(As cheap as a tub of goose fat).

Crocodilesoup · 01/08/2019 21:36

I miss the Troon crossing

Glasgowgin · 01/08/2019 21:56

If you plan driving down from Glasgow to Cairnryan leave plenty of time and check ahead for roadworks etc. Not uncommon to have roadworks planned esp over weekends, and there's only one main road down.

PierreBezukov · 01/08/2019 22:05

Yes the road to Cairnryan is pretty bad. The ferry is fine though and the crossing flies by.

sonjadog · 01/08/2019 22:12

How about a wakeboard as a compromise?

Lovethissun · 01/08/2019 22:12

That foot passenger fare is very cheap- we could even do a little day trip there and back!
I wonder if a day trip would be too tiring...
Anyone know if there’s car hire right at the Belfast port?

Not sure about car hire - we drove Cairnryan to Belfast today. Ferry was v busy, glad we had our camping chairs & could sit in the sun for the 40 min delay. A 10 ish year old girl was going up & down the family/games area on a scooter 🙄 but it's ok-they usually have 10-20% sales so get a discount...

Lovethissun · 02/08/2019 00:31

Thanks buckeejit 👍 Still wondering if a day trip there and back would be too tiring ( in a day )

How far are you from Cairnryan?

HarrietSchulenberg · 02/08/2019 01:18

If you get to Cairnryan too early, park up in the big layby a mile or so up the coast and while away the time watching the oystercatchers swooping over the loch. I spent a very happy afternoon that way a few years back.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 02/08/2019 01:49

I'd fly. I hate that boat, the crossing is always choppy. And I certainly wouldn't attempt that crossing in a fifty quid dinghy! Grin.

Mind you, its been 20 years since I did that crossing regularly, maybe its better now, although I can't imagine the sea is any smoother.

I know a few people in and around Glasgow who’ve had a day in Belfast, but they flew rather than get the ferry. I think they went with EasyJet.

Only car hire is at the airports - you'd have to get a taxi to the city airport to hire a car. But do come over, it's great here!
