To think I’m probably dying (or at least have IBS)?

Might be a little melodramatic but I’ve just had an ‘episode’ and I get one of these around once a month/once every couple of months that cause me utter agony so thought I’d ask if anyone’s experienced it - or if it’s something like IBS? Doctor Google always tells me I’m dying so here we are.

Basically, I get these ‘episodes’ that wake me up - usually anywhere between 2-4 hours after eating where I’m in unbearable pain and my stomach looks like I’m 9 months pregnant. Now comes the TMI bit...

I basically have to sit on the toilet for a good half an hour before everything moves at once - both ends. I’m violently sick and have the worst (ahem) bowels ever. Before this happens my stomach is as hard as a rock and I feel like I’m so so bunged up that everything just needs to come out. Which it does; with aplomb!

It’s been going on for about 3 years now, but it’s so inconsistent that whenever I think I’ll see a doctor about it I’m back to my usual self (literally as soon as I’ve been to the toilet I’m fine again)!

I’ve tried matching it to the food I eat but there doesn’t seem to be any pattern.

So, am I dying?

My ibs is stress related and I have been sick with it . Sounds exactly like mine but I would get it checked out

BuildingQuote · 31/07/2019 22:33

Oh poor you!! I hope someone more medical will advise but I would say it definitely needs sorting for your sake as sounds awful for you.
It sounds like you’ve seen a doctor about it? Did they not have any suggestions even if it wasn’t going on when you saw them? They must presumably know what it might be?
I would want it urgently sorted but wouldn’t assume it was anything sinister .

BuildingQuote · 31/07/2019 22:34

Also i know you’ve looked for a link in diet but can you also look up typical IbS irritants and give those up for a bit - for me coffee is one

PinkGlitter123 · 31/07/2019 22:36

Does sound like IBS but I would ask for a calprotectin test. It's a stool sample you do which measures if there is any inflammation in the intestines which may suggest crohns/colitis. Not saying you have that but if the levels are high (Above 50)it usually means further investigations need to be done.

Janiiiiiiice · 31/07/2019 22:39

Sounds just like my IBS symptoms save that I've never vomited, and mine is more frequent.

It could also be an allergy to something you haven't identified yet.

For both IBS and food allergies it's well worth keeping a food diary for a while to see if you can spot a pattern. I know you tried that already but might be worth another shot of recording everything in a very detailed way?

Jupiter13 · 31/07/2019 22:42

Wouldn't fancy using the bathroom after you.😬😬😬😬😬

NeverOwnAHouse · 31/07/2019 22:43

Thanks all. I always thought IBS was something that happened like every day, which is why I thought it couldn’t be that. I don’t really know much about it though to be fair.

I’ve been to the doctor about it a couple of times in the past and they took a stool sample like a week after it happened but didn’t see anything. My doctor is very much a shrug it off kinda guy which is helpful for a GP haha.

I think I’m going to keep a more detailed food diary and definitely march back in there with more proof.

I have IBS and an IBD. You need to have a chat with your doctor, and a bloodbtest just to rule out anything nasty, especially as vomiting isn't a typical symptom. I've had ibs for over 30 years, and run several online. Support groups. Feel. Better soon.

Loveglee · 31/07/2019 22:46

Do you eat quorn? It seems to cause a reaction like that in some people.

Jupiter13 · 31/07/2019 22:48

I'm glad you can laugh..😂...my son gets it but not as bad as you. He doesn't eat pastry or drink alcohol.

Twitney · 31/07/2019 22:50

Really sounds like something to discuss with your GP? If you’re not happy with how yours has handled your concerns then find another.

ohmydaysagain · 31/07/2019 22:51

I have been like this and thought Ibs then I looked at my cycle and it's always just a couple of days before my period. I've never had it while pregnant except during labour. I found mine is hormone related. Is it happening around your monthly cycle? Some months were ok for me others were not. That's why I think it took me so long to make the connection.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 31/07/2019 22:54

Are you menstrual and does it tie in with a certain point in your cycle?

I have crohns disease but the rise in progesterone in the second half of a cycle made it the crohns symptoms worse. Once my progesterone dropped the crohns settled back down again.

PinkGlitter123 · 31/07/2019 22:58

I also have ibd and find you have to be a bit pushy with doctors to get answers.
Again, not saying you have crohns /colitis but for peace of mind you want to rule them out x

MollyHuaCha · 31/07/2019 23:05

Question for you OP, have you ever had abdominal surgery such as a C-section, ovarian cyst removed, appendix taken out, gall bladder etc, anything where you were cut open and sewn up again?

user1486131602 · 31/07/2019 23:22

Need to speak to your Dr, could be chrome disease, or ins or you have an allergy ie: coeliac?
Either way you will need to discuss diet and meds with your Dr.
Good luck 😉

Spermysextowel · 31/07/2019 23:28

Don’t play fast & loose with your bowels. The vomiting sounds particularly unusual. I’d get another opinion from a less dismissive GP.

kateandme · 31/07/2019 23:49

yes you can vomit with it
yes it can go quiet for months and then come back like a shitstorm(literally)
yes yes yes all your symtoms can be ibs.of course get more info if you need it but all you mentioned can be ibs
and it doesnt have to be diet related.
stress is a huge one.

FartnissEverbeans · 31/07/2019 23:57

Definitely could be IBS. I don’t have issues everyday, but have flare ups every now and again. I haven’t had any really bad ones since I got pregnant three years ago but it used to be really painful, to the point I cried to my GP. I wished it was appendicitis so they could just cut it out.

I didn’t have poo issues so much as just horrendous pain, but the poo was sometimes a problem too. I also once threw up on myself in the bath at my MIL’s house Blush . It was grim. Luckily she’s a nurse...

There are things that can be done. I monitor my food and fasting helps a lot. I have mebeverine hydrochloride tablets for when I have a flare up and I find that peppermint oil capsules also help (maybe placebo but I don’t care). I sit in a hot bath until it passes (record is 8+ hours in the bath. I read Atonement) and sip hot water.

Isittheend · 01/08/2019 00:05

I have diverticular episodes. They are horrific, like labour pain cramping. I usually need antibiotics.

ImTheDamnFoolThatShotHim · 01/08/2019 00:14

I had similar symptoms and I've been diagnosed with diverticular disease

Oriunda · 01/08/2019 00:28

This was me last year. The pains were crippling and you could literally see my stomach distending. The only way to relieve the pain was to vomit.

I'd sort of diagnosed myself with IBS, but I didn't have the poo issues.

I've private health insurance so my GP sent me for various tests. Ruled out IBS. Considered gallstones. I had a colonoscopy, MRI scans and so on to rule out everything.

My consultant finally diagnosed me as 'FFF' (fair/fat/fifty) and, other than a minor kidney stone, could only suggest I consult a dietician.

A year on, my stomach is still enlarged, particularly after eating, but the vomiting has practically stopped.

It wasn't until I was talking to a friend that we realised we had both sufferered and we were both menopausal. So it could be related to that (not sure how old you are?).

If you can, do get your GP to test because there could be different explanations other than IBS.

Interestingly to the PP who mentioned TOTM, that’s something I might keep an eye on as it’s that time now. I’ve never correlated the two before!

@MollyHuaCha I have had a salpingectomy (sp?) through a laparoscopy. The issues started before that, though, so not sure if it’s related.
