To get my FREE Waitrose Coffee BEFORE I pay for my shopping & BEFORE I leave the shop?

RighteousSista · 31/07/2019 09:24

Often of a morning i like to fill up my refillable Waitrose cup with the free coffee which I drink when wandering around the shop and picking up shopping that qualifies said free drink.
It has recently been raised by the veh naice security guard that I need to prove i have paid for it before getting it. I always thought that so long as I had paid for my shopping (ergo accounting for free coffee which would also be in the receipt) & I had not left premises without paying nor intentionally depriving them. first world problem i know! but AIBU?

This is why I shop at Sainsbury's . Hmm.

onedayiwillmissthis · 01/08/2019 08:00

Very unreasonable to dick about with a flipping coffee whilst pushing a trolley round store!

When I pay the lovely assistants always ask me 'would you like a drink'? My response...no, thank you. Had one ask me 'oh, don't you like coffee? To which I replied...yes, love coffee. Which is why I will go home and make some (that stuff from their machines....urghh)Grin

EveshamMum · 01/08/2019 08:01

@Butiwantto I do 👋🏻

OtraCosaMariposa · 01/08/2019 08:07

I always forget to add the coffee to my bill as I usually go to the self service tills. Would never get it on the way in though, juggling a mug of coffee and doing shopping isn't easy.

0blio · 01/08/2019 08:15

YABVVU to "wander" around with a coffee. This is why I shop in Aldi, can't stand supermarket ditherers.

indianbackground · 01/08/2019 08:17

Be grateful, it’s free and follow the rules.
Wandering with a coffee is dangerous, including to yourself. I’m partially sighted, do my best not to bang into people, but do sometimes.

lazymare · 01/08/2019 08:20

But you're actually having 2 free coffees if you're filling it before and after

I have 1.5 free coffees as I add a half shot of black coffee to my free latte. To fill up the cup I spent £3 on because I always forget mine 😂

EdithWeston · 01/08/2019 08:25

It used to be normal to see people in Waitrose with a coffee in hand.

Because before they changed the T&Cs you could have your coffee free at the start of your shop.

But because of the pisstakers (came in for the coffee only) they changed the system, and you now get one only after you have made a purchase.

The store staff are correct to reprimand.

MarthasGinYard · 01/08/2019 08:28

I was delighted when Waitrose changed their policy.

Yabu

I couldn't stand the shopping with free coffee brigade.

HeronLanyon · 01/08/2019 08:33

I’ve never used my Waitrose free coffee offer. It’s one of those things which gives me unreasonable rage ! Why does anyone need to sip coffee when ‘browsing’ the aisles ? Why do the queues always get in the way of the exact bit of beg I wanted to get to?

Anyway that rage aside - is always assumed you could get a coffee ‘browse and sip’ and then pay at the end. Does this mean you are supposed to shop and pay first and take the coffee away ?

lachenalia · 01/08/2019 09:02

This free coffee lark doesn't just piss off the customers , it totally infuriates the poor staff (oops sorry - partners)who have to spend hours cleaning and refilling the bloody machines ,time that could be better spent filling the empty shelves with food for customers to buy because guess what, the coffee machine tasks were added to the role of the already stressed and overworked staff on the welcome desk . Things have improved slightly now customers have to provide their own cups but it still costs the company a fortune to do and hours to look after and is a right pain in the arse for all the staff concerned but it was the chairman's great idea so we are stuck with it for a while yet As for the idea that it isn't abused , just watch the veh naice customers fill up two cups from the machine for their days supply or the ones who walk in off the street ,fill up then walk out again or even fill up with coffee before paying for their shopping , so yes it is !

Sparklingbrook · 01/08/2019 09:10

The rules surrounding this are pretty straightforward. Make purchase-get coffee. The end.

HeronLanyon · 01/08/2019 09:45

sparkling that is clear. I was so annoyed when first introduced and bods were aimlessly sipping in aisles that I’ve not ever paid attention to how/why it works now.

MarthasGinYard · 01/08/2019 09:45

I remember when they moved the free coffee to the deli counter for a while.

I complained to manager as I stood in queue for about 15 mins whilst the grabbers were just getting their free coffee and I actually wanted to purchase.

The poor staff had enough as they were having to refill the machine which took a while too,

SmileEachDay · 01/08/2019 09:58

This thread has made me realise I hate the word “sip”

I’m adding it to the list.

AuntyMarysBigRedPants · 01/08/2019 10:06

You get a coffee after you have paid to prevent idiots walking through the shop with a scolding drink

70sWitch · 01/08/2019 10:26

Why the hell do people who can afford Waitrose, need a FREE anything? Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/08/2019 10:26

yy. And the idea of "browsing the aisles" in a supermarket.

Butterymuffin · 01/08/2019 10:31

They'll just get rid of the offer in time due to customers like you. Not enough to have something for free, it has to be in the specific way you demand it..

HeronLanyon · 01/08/2019 10:35

Yes the need to see ‘sipping’ and ‘browsing’ combined furthered my quiet despair.

MarthasGinYard · 01/08/2019 10:43

'Sip'

Angry'

SmileEachDay · 01/08/2019 10:49

Sipping coffee whilst browsing the aisles for a picky tea to nibble.

PantsyMcPantsface · 01/08/2019 10:53

Our most local Waitrose is about to be turned into a Lidl. The horror among the Waitrose demographic is hilarious to watch.

People were completely taking the piss with the free coffee - hence the crackdown. If they hadn't taken the piss it wouldn't have been an issue.

RitaMills · 01/08/2019 10:53
