To think that I may never be able to drive?

I have had 132 hours of lessons over just under 2 years now. I have never been a lesson without the dual controls being used. At what point do I need to accept that I may never pass a test? Aibu to think that I may never drive? It is sooo frustrating!

Do you feel that you've improved over that time? Or is your instructor telling you you're not ready for a test?

If I'd been at it that long and didn't feel it was clicking I'd probably try a new instructor to be honest.

Mrsducky88 · 30/07/2019 15:46

Have you thought about trying in an automatic instead. Much less to think about. I passed 3rd time in a manual but hated every second of it. Got myself an automatic and find driving much more of a pleasure now.

TabbyMumz · 30/07/2019 15:47

Is there no one who can take you out to practice between lessons? My child has a lesson a week, but we go out most nights to get extra practice.

ThandieNewtongirlcrush · 30/07/2019 15:48

@Funnyface1 I’ve improved dramatically since when I first started but haven’t made much progress since about last October. My instructor is really encouraging and supportive but is realistic in that if I take a test and need the dual controls I will fail

Have you thought about changing instructor?

Jaz994 · 30/07/2019 15:48

Have you spoken to your driving instructor about how you feel or have you tried changing instructors? Think it's wrong for an instructor to keep taking your money for this many lessons if you do not seem to be getting anywhere Sad.. I changed instructors and got on so much better with the 2nd one, was more relaxed which made it easier to learn.

rickandmorts · 30/07/2019 15:49

Have you had the same instructor for 132 hours?? Definitely need to change or try automatic.

Celebelly · 30/07/2019 15:49

What kind of situation does he need to use the controls in?

ThandieNewtongirlcrush · 30/07/2019 15:49

@IKnowPlaces I have but I’m not sure what the point would be- she’s very patient and encouraging and her style of teaching suits me- I have learnt a lot it’s just like I’ve plateaued though

She, sorry. I think a change might be good. That's a lot of hours to be in a situation where the dual controls are still being used every lesson Sad

Expressedways · 30/07/2019 15:51

-Get a new instructor; if they need to use the dual controls after that many hours then encouraging as they may be, they’re not doing a very good job of teaching you
-Strongly consider automatic only
-Find someone to practice with outside of lessons

You can do this, good luck!

newmomof1 · 30/07/2019 15:53

What is it exactly that you struggle with?

LadyRannaldini · 30/07/2019 15:53

Why do we assume that everyone will be able to drive, maybe it's one of those things you'll never be able to do, a bit like me and brain surgery?
I find it worrying that people can learn for years, fail to pass umpteen times, get lucky once and be deemed capable of driving anything! I would like to see some restriction on new drivers, gradually lifted after periods of problem free driving.

SimonJT · 30/07/2019 15:53

Why does the instructor need to use the dual controls?

Lots of automatic instructors specialise in lost causes - mine did. I passed third time but I’m a pretty safe driver, haven’t had an accident for 20 years. I think you should try the automatic route.

OpenYourEyes · 30/07/2019 15:59

I had tons of lessons and got nowhere with one instructor, passed when I finally switched.

I can't even imagine what situations your instructor would be using the dual controls. Mine literally only used them to break if I did something dangerous.

Have you passed your theory and hazard perception?

KnifeAngel · 30/07/2019 15:59

Something is not right there. I would see another instructor. I have never had the instructor use the dual controls ever when I was learning.

Pinkout · 30/07/2019 16:03

I would find a new instructor. Have you never even taken a test in that time? She’s wasting your time imo. The average is 40 hours of lessons before taking a test and most people pass second time.

Try automatic only too, a colleague of my DH’s recently passed in his fifties doing automatic. He thought he’d never drive either, some people struggle with the clutch (it is hard).

danni0509 · 30/07/2019 16:11

Change instructors and go automatic.

I had 13 years and years worth of on and off lessons.

I changed instructor and went auto and passed last year first time.
