To try for a scholarship as skint ?

Posting here for traffic... DD going into year 5 at local independent prep. Due to our work circumstances changing soon / DP's ongoing health issues, sadly won't be able to continue an independent education for secondary. Her year 4 teacher has advised us she definitely has potential to get into grammar. The local grammar is single sex. DD wont entertain the prospect of an all girls school as tends to get on better with boys than girls. Although she'd do fine academically, I agree that a single sex environment wouldn't work for her. Local state secondaries don't have the best of reputations, so I'd like to try and get her into one of the local independents on a scholarship or part scholarship (which we might just about manage if 50%). Has your DD or DS gained entrance under a scholarship to an independent secondary? What special talent/s of theirs helped ? DD plays trumpet at grade 2 level and speaks fluent French. All 1s or 2s at school subject wise. So although we are totally happy with her progress, not sure if it's enough to clinch a scholarship. Do you think we have a chance or should I just start looking at the local state schools?

50% scholarships are extremely rare. And Grade 2 is nowhere near the standard needed for a Music scholarship. I'd start looking at the state options if I were you

As mentioned above Grade 2 Level (has she even passed the exam?!) is nowhere near the right standard. DD1 is also going into Year 5 in September and is taking Gd 5 cello in the Autumn - others are already ahead of that. They'd need to have a second instrument at at least Gd 3 as well.

Start looking at state

Have responded on your other thread.

(But two threads is one too many ...)

Most secondary schools have their own scholarship categories, depending in part on what money has been donated to the school from past pupils. Often they’ll have an all rounder type, so if your dd is good at lots of things, but not outstanding at one thing, this might be an option. Scholarships are often just a small percentage of the fees, however if you are on a low income many schools will combine a bursary with a scholarship. IMO it’s worth getting in touch with the schools and having a chat.

Grade 8 would get a scholarship not 2! Typically scholarships are 10% start looking at state options
