To think playing a song can bring you bad luck?

Is this a type of magical thinking, or do you think playing a certain song can bring "bad luck" or cause something awful to happen?

I associate a certain song with the death of my cat, another with losing my job, and yet another with someone assaulting my mum. I'm terrified of an increasingly large number of songs, but recently started to question whether it's just me associating one with the other.

No it’s just associating one thing with another. However if it was the one song always playing when each bad things happen you may be on to something...

Unfortunately this sounds like obsessive thinking or anxiety and may be worth a chat with your GP about 💛 I get it - songs are very emotive, and having quite severe OCD and anxiety myself I understand the severity and 'realness' of the feelings, but to be terrified of hearing them is definitely something to tackle. Give yourself the freedom to turn the radio on without fear! Good luck xx

Of course there’s no correlation. You’re just anxious and trying to impose an artificial logic on events to give yourself a sense of control. Which is understandable but clearly not helping you at the moment. CBT might help you recognise the pattern of thinking.

If it was the same song every time then you might have half a point. What about all the songs you listened to when good things happened?

I tried some DIY graded exposure, playing a song from one of those times - I had a "bad news" letter issued on the date I played the song. I'm frightened to tell my psychologist just how bad it is, just in case I end up sectioned, or worse they give me a Hmm look about my taste in music.

If you already have access to a psychologist, then I would definitely discuss it with them. I can't promise they won't secretly judge your taste in music Wink but they certainly won't judge your thoughts. What you are describing are incredibly common intrusive anxiety thoughts. Lots and lots of people have them, from those of us with a few superstitions to intense OCD experiences. And they are receptive to psychological interventions. Don't suffer in silence Smile

PS There is no way on earth sectioning would even cross someone's mind for this sort of thing. Inpatient beds are a scarce and very expensive option reserved for when people are in acute crisis and a high risk to themself or others.

I agree with PP that it’s not the songs which bring bad luck just what you associate with them.

I’m the same about certain jewellery, I have kept but not worn many pieces from bad times in my life, and religiously worn the necklace from when I became pregnant with my rainbow DC. I’ve not taken it off once in the 3 1/2 years since falling pregnant and being pregnant again I refuse to do so now. It’s probably not the most normal thing, but it’s not doing any harm to anyone.

That's anxiety-sounding. Talk to someone. You don't have to tell them the actual song if it's something terrible. Smile
