To think I should be allowed to access my road 24/7?

Cycle event. Road closures. I mean why is this s thing? People have lives. What if my holiday return flight booked a year ago before cycle events were published flew me in on this day! What if my pet needed the vet? What if I was pregnant and needed to get to an antenatal appointment ? What if I had a shift job that required me to leave home or I finished smack in the middle of the event? Hospital appointment? Dialysis appointment? Chemotherapy session? It's endless. People have lives that require them to be able to come and go. How is it ok to hold people hostage?

A young woman cyclist near us lost her life , hit by a car. Surely it’s best to separate them. Don’t be selfish.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/07/2019 18:54

My vote goes to those who say be a bit less car dependent for the day! It is possible to leave your house on foot. I've done it myself. Embrace the noveltyGrin

Lindy2 · 28/07/2019 18:55

"Participants in this year's PrudentialRideLondoneventshave raisedmore than £13 million forcharity, setting a European record for a one-day cycling event.19 Dec 2018"

You still haven't said the event. Ride London is next Sunday and for those moaning about the half a day of a bit of inconvenience, please consider the above statement from last year's race. Do you still feel that your car driving rights are more important than £13 million for charities?

I am blocked in so we make sure we don't make plans for that morning other than to enjoy the race.

Orangeballon · 28/07/2019 18:55

Absolutely, you do need access at all times.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/07/2019 18:55

@Chocolatelover45
@lampygirl
How do you propose people like me do that? I have a disabled badge precisely because I can’t just leave my car and walk.

Do you both realise the criterion for being assessed as needing a badge is the inability to walk more than 200 metres?

@FiddlesticksAkimbo
Would love to “embrace the novelty”. Could you order me a new body please?

SoupDragon · 28/07/2019 18:58

If you are blocked in stay home and enjoy watching the race.

I can't imagine anything more boring!

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/07/2019 18:59

Not cycling but another male dominated fast vehicle sport

Ahhhh, it's a feminist issue GrinGrin

You don’t know you are born OP. Move to Brighton where roads are closed constantly, I swear there are more days with parades, sports events, demos etc etc than normal working days. It’s GREAT! I bloody love Brighton.

PhilOmenon · 28/07/2019 19:03

We didn't get nearly so much information when our roads closed for a cycle race. No steward information. No alternative options. No months old notice. It caused major issues for carers and support workers trying to get to clients.

ilovepixie · 28/07/2019 19:04

I live in a town that holds a motorcycle event every year it's basically a road Race and the roads are closed the public on three separate days during the week. It's an annual event so everybody knows about it and make plans accordingly. We recently hosted The British open golf championship here and There were road closures and carparks closed throughout the town. This was published months in advance so people could make plans. It can be annoying but it brings a lot of business to the area so you just have to work with it.

PhilOmenon · 28/07/2019 19:05

Months of notice.

ragged · 28/07/2019 19:06

I couldn't park in town centre today due to (occasional Sunday market).
I never go to the market. It doesn't offer anything I want. I didn't know in advance.
It was fine. I figured out somewhere else to park.
I wasn't offended by an event I don't appreciate using space I wanted.

VeloHostage · 28/07/2019 19:08

I think the answer is just suck it up. Anyway, you won't get a sympathetic hearing here ... the last thread about the Birmingham Velo was a revelation about how unreasonable you are being ...

tobypercy · 28/07/2019 19:08

@redredrobins
You're missing the point about advance notice.

If I knew there was an event and I couldn't get my car away from the house on Monday... yes that would be ok. Inconvenient but so is life.

welshweasel · 28/07/2019 19:10

We have quite a few of these. I work at the local hospital - we get emailed well in advance and if we’re due to be working we get a pass that enables us to drive on the course (obviously under the guidance of marshals). They make plans for any patients that will need to get treatment e.g. dialysis too. Emergency vehicles obviously allowed also. I really don’t see what the issue is. These events promote healthy living, raise money for charity, are generally fun to watch and only last a few hours!

SquirmOfEels · 28/07/2019 19:11

One of the Adidas City Runs doesn't seem to be happening again, and I was wondering if that was in response to resident's complaints (the Clapham one). Anyone know?

People don't always read the info (straight in to the recycling as junk, without checking if anything it says matters to them).

The big events do have the right work-around in place and they nearly always go smoothly. People need to complain like crazy in the odd occasion they don't, to make sure it never slips down the organiser's priorities list.

Disabled access is covered by welfare assistance.

I don't know if return from absence is. OP: did you call the access team as soon as the info came out? (Dates were published before you booked, so presumably you were looking out for the admin info) And what did they say?

Myshoesarenew · 28/07/2019 19:13

I’m with you OP - the end of our road gets closed a couple of times a year and we are effectively on an island for that time. Our road ends up being a rat run because people think they will be able to get down it but they can’t, and the rest of the roads have traffic stood still. I’ve made two urgent trips to a&e with my child this week, they would have been disastrous during one of these events!

mathanxiety · 28/07/2019 19:14

If you have a condition that rules out walking to your parked car or a bus that picks you up for dialysis, etc., can you contact the organisers so that they can work with you to help you get out?

Or contact the LA that issues permits for the closure to request no road closure if there are individuals on certain streets whose health might be jeopardised if vehicular access is not permitted?

UrsulaPandress · 28/07/2019 19:14

So if I need to leave my home twice a day to provide care, what am I supposed to do?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/07/2019 19:14

If nothing else it does help to reinforce the fact that you do not own the road outside your house. And it makes no odds whether you're pregnant, on chemo, disabled or your house is on fire! Other people have the right to use the road, and occasionally you may find it very inconvenient.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/07/2019 19:15

So if I need to leave my home twice a day to provide care, what am I supposed to do?
You'd have to walk.

SquirmOfEels · 28/07/2019 19:16

"So if I need to leave my home twice a day to provide care, what am I supposed to do?"

Contact the Welfare Assistance team as soon as the current year's info is published, ot the organisers main help desk at any time.
