to think secondary school goes so fast

DD is about to do into Y11. Feels like yesterday she was a tiny Y7 with a massive blazer. It’s gone so much quicker than primary school did and it’s quite said to be fair. I mean it’s almost been half a decade and she only has one year left!?

Oh dont say that! Shock My youngest is just about to start Y7 and my eldest is going into Y9 and I need to feel that I have lots of years of their childhood left.

kitk · 27/07/2019 21:33

Every year seems to go faster than the one before so I suppose it's just that

macbooksticker · 27/07/2019 21:36

@BarbariansMum Don’t worry, Y7 feels like forever to finish! You’ll be happy by summer. Y9 is fairly tedious too with picking options etc. Y8 went quite fast oddly though

My brother is already going into year 9. Year 7 took ages to finish and year 8 was quite quick for him and he picked options in year 8.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 27/07/2019 21:46

Yep, I have a 'little girl' going into Year 11 in September as well. This week she had her ears pierced and ten inches of long blonde hair cut off. With her hipster glasses she could pass for 18 easily. It's terrifying how quickly the time passes.

Starlight456 · 27/07/2019 21:51

Mine has just finished year 7 . How I have loved not going out on school run twice a day.

gubbsywubbsy · 27/07/2019 21:56

Same .. it's only 4 and a half years compared to 7 isn't it so I guess it's obvious it goes quicker . .. dd goes into year 11 too 😬😬

pickme · 27/07/2019 21:56

Omg! I said the very same thing to a few friends yesterday who have children going into year 7. Primary took forever just dragged on and on, mine go into year 10 in sept I the blink of an eye.

Lellikelly26 · 27/07/2019 21:57

It really does go fast, and seems faster as they grow up so much in that time

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/07/2019 21:58

They are both 7 years?

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/07/2019 21:59

R-6
7-13
both the same.

macbooksticker · 27/07/2019 22:01

@mydcaremarvel
Reception to Y6 = 7 years
Y7-Easter Y11 = 4.5/almost 5 years
Y12 and 13 aren’t secondary school, that’s sixth form even if it’s at the same school as the secondary or college

hadthesnip2 · 27/07/2019 22:02

I bloody wish it did. Youngest dc has just finished y7 so at least another 4 years until he can leave....very most likely will be 6 years. !! Want all 3 off my hands asap.

DickieDonkey · 27/07/2019 22:08

Nearly 8 years between my youngest and oldest, feels like I will be doing the primary school run forever. Will be so happy when the youngest gets to secondary.

bwydda · 27/07/2019 22:16

When I was in secondary it was the longest most painful uncomfortable and horrible time of my life.

My children in secondary- endless, previous , beautiful years that bound by without pausing HmmShockConfused

Rockbird · 27/07/2019 22:25

Another one with a newbie year 7 in September. Primary has flown by, please don't tell me secondary does too!

macbooksticker · 27/07/2019 22:31

@rockbird

Don’t worry just yet. Y7 is painfully slow!

Er no it’s all high school /secondary school.
Sixth form is just a throw back to when the others high school years were one to five.

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/07/2019 00:00

“The year groups at Secondary School level are:

Year 7 (age 11 - 12)
Year 8 (age 12 - 13)
Year 9 (age 13 - 14) SATs testing takes place (end of Key Stage 3)
Year 10 (age 14 - 15)
Year 11 (age 15 - 16) The year most students take their GCSE exams (end of Key Stage 4)
Year 12 (age 16 - 17) AS level exams taken in this year (also known as the Lower Sixth)
Year 13 (age 17 - 18) A-Level exams taken in this year (also known as the Upper Sixth)”

What you are referring too is simply lower secondary rather than upper secondary . All seven years are secondary school.

Sparklingbrook · 28/07/2019 00:04

In these parts-

First School YR-Y4
Middle School Y5-Y7
High School Y8-Y11
Sixth Form Y12-Y13

No, Year 12/13 isn’t secondary education. It’s Further Education. 90 % of schools where I live don’t have 6th forms so it’s college anyway.

BackforGood · 28/07/2019 00:04

Depends on your locality.

In some areas Yrs 12 and 13 just carry on through at school, and in others the majority of folk leave and go to 6th form colleges.

I'd say secondary is normally 7 yrs, myself.

gubbsywubbsy · 28/07/2019 00:05

My dd will go to a completely different place for sixth form and it's very different . Much more relaxed etc.. to us secondary is up to GCSE's. Then college, then uni .

Sparklingbrook · 28/07/2019 00:08

Both of mine stayed on got 6th Form at their schools. But there is a Sixth Form College too. Depends what you want to study really.

lakeswimmer · 28/07/2019 00:09

OP I agree with you. My eldest has just finished year 11 and it's sped by compared to primary.

It is only five years if your DC leaves at the end of year 11 to spend years 12 and 13 at another institution which is what DS1 has chosen to do and is also what my younger children will do as they're at a school which doesn't have a sixth form.
