Husband broke my vacuum!

Not really a big problem but for some reason it’s reduced me to tears!

2 years ago I brought myself a Miele blizzard cat and dog. It cost nearly £300 but for me an essential as we have 2 labradors, 2 cats (one long haired) and dd(6). Yesterday, DH broke (as in snapped) the handle off!! It’s irreparable!! It’s a fantastic Hoover and I can do the whole house, 4 bedrooms, mixture of carpet and hard floors in less than an hour!! It gets everything!

So today DH suggests a Henry. He sells them at work and we can have it for £70 (a bargain in comparison to my treasured Miele). I went to pick it up to try it out this morning (as it’s like someone has shaved the dogs this week) as it’s a desperate situation, there’s dog hair everywhere. So anyway, I’ve put henry together and had a go and omg he’s a good vacuum but only if you have NO PETS!! He will not lift the dog hair!! I’ve been trying to vacuum the living room for 25 minutes (I could have done the whole of the downstairs in this time) and I’m still not done. My arm has died and it’s reduced me to tears (goodness knows why 😩).

I guess my AIBU is, as a full time mum, full time at work, AIBU in needing a vacuum that performs well, at a price (my husband thinks it’s excessive to spend this on a vacuum, my new Miele would be £220), that doesn’t mean I’ll need to be vacuuming for 3 hours (as it’s taking me 3-4 times longer to do it!!)????

I probably should also add, that this is DH attempt to replace my Miele since he accepts he’s a fault when he broke it 😩

My Henry deals with labrador hair brilliantly. But your dh should replace your Miele if he broke it imo.

Sparklfairy · 27/07/2019 11:57

It's a false economy to have a cheap vacuum that doesn't do the job. If he doesn't want to shell out fora decent vacuum that he broke, he can do the hoovering from now on with the henry. And make sure he does it properly and it takes him ages. He clearly thinks his time is worth more than yours.

Mummytowooter · 27/07/2019 11:57

Thanks both! That’s exactly what I said. If Henry stays I won’t be vacuuming from this day forth!!!

CruellaFeinberg · 27/07/2019 11:58

why is it your hoover? if you are full time at work, don't you share chores etc?

(but he should replace it if it makes housework easier)

QueenEnid · 27/07/2019 11:58

If your husband thinks the Miele is too expensive then he should do all of the hoovering with the Henry.

I'd have just replaced the Miele and not given him the option to suggest anything else.

CruellaFeinberg · 27/07/2019 11:58

( I was trying to say that in a non cuntish way but not sure I succeeded)

Lovelydovey · 27/07/2019 11:58

You can get a pet hair attachment for a Henry which works better - though I feel your pain. Hoovering with a crap hoover is painful and time consuming.

DerbyRacer · 27/07/2019 12:00

Yanbu I have a Miele and would cry if someone broke it. It makes hoovering so much easier.

Mummytowooter · 27/07/2019 12:01

I guess it’s kind of my little toy 😁. DH will usually do the stairs for me as I hate doing them but I don’t mind the rest usually. When my Dyson broke I insisted them on the Miele so I don’t know why I’ve even entered into this with DH to be honest. I should have just ordered online like I did before.

He breaks a Miele he replaces withva Miele. You don't give someone a Reliant Robin when you've crashed their Jag.

Also he does all the hoovering with the Henry and picks up the dog hair with a roll of sticky tape until the Miele appears.

(Maybe I am harsh - because I too had my nice vacuum broken by an XH when he 'lent' it to his boss who broke it and refused to replace it with anything at all !!)

He's a cheeky fecker trying to palm you of with a Henry.

burritofan · 27/07/2019 12:02

Why is it your hoover and why isn't your DH wrestling with the Henry vs dog hair chore?

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2019 12:02

Well the Henry is his vacuum cleaner so he's going to be doing the vacuuming from now on then, isn't he?

Mummytowooter · 27/07/2019 12:02

Honestly derby you’ve made me feel better. I feel like a total twat having a sob over it 😂😂

I have the same Miele and I hate the thing passionately! The plastic on it is flimsy so no surprise that your handle broke. The bits that hook into the cradle on both my heads have snapped so it no longer clicks in.

I have bought a Henry’s cordless to replace it and my life is so much happier Grin I have a golden retriever and two cats. And a long haired son. I loved henry. I’m also a cleaner and clean for families with the dogs. Henry makes easy work of it all.

Mummytowooter · 27/07/2019 12:04

I feel a bit sad for Henry. Minus the dog hair issue he’s ok. Just not what I need for the job at hand. If I could have managed with a Henry before now I would have had one rather than fork out nearly £300 a pop on a Hoover! I shall remind DH of this when he gets home 😁

MaisyMary77 · 27/07/2019 12:04

Can you get it repaired? Sorry, I know you said it was irreparable, but thought I’d just suggest this anyway...when my DH broke our Miele vacuum, I called up Miele. They sent a box for it and within 2 weeks it was back, with a years warranty on the repair. All for £100.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 27/07/2019 12:06

I 100% get it! DP is not allowed to touch my hoover or my Mop! He doesn't want to either! If he broke them I think I would cry! I don't touch his oven or his washing machine!

I think your DP should by you your £220 hoover.

Mummytowooter · 27/07/2019 12:07

Looked at buying a new Miele handle. Bloody £76!!! I’d rather have a new one than pay that for a shitty price of moulded plastic

OP posts:
avalanching · 27/07/2019 12:09

Well I suppose it wasn't worth £300 if it broke in such a small space of time. It's a bit cringeworthy that it's "your" vacuum, I suppose if it's your toy you buy a new one to play with, or let DH choose one and ensure he does more of the vacuuming and I'm sure he will upgrade if it's inefficient.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2019 12:11

There are some Miele handles on eBay for a lot less than £76. They might be fake, but it just looks like a piece of plastic, so it might be worth trying one of those?

Villanellesproudmum · 27/07/2019 12:13

You want a Harry, it’s great on pet hair.

slowco4ch · 27/07/2019 12:17

Go on eBay or Amazon. Copy parts available or 2nd hand handle. Silly to throw a £300 for the sake of the handle.

flumpybear · 27/07/2019 12:17

@Mummytowooter - for goodness sake next time get on MN to sense check for hoovers first!! I've only ever heard that Miele and Shark hoovers are good for pets

But to cheer you up my lucky to still be married to me husband hoovered up our DD's SICK with our brand new Dyson about 8 years ago - I was apoplectic - he had to pull the whole lot to bits and clean it all the way through but still honked of baby puke for a while 🤢🤢🤮

Wellmet · 27/07/2019 12:17

I've clicked YABU simply because of the 'my vaccuum' and 'he does the stairs for me'.

Unless you're going to dripfeed that he doesn't live with you then he's very much vaccuuming the stairs for himself, not you.
