Bag of old thongs

insideoutsider · 27/07/2019 09:29

I have about 40 pairs of used thongs that I no longer need. Yes, I used to only wear thongs and I accumulated a number over the years, with different colours, different designs, for different times.

The problem now is they have been in a bag ready for disposal for about 6 months and I don't know where to put them.
My other clothes and DCs clothes went to charity during that cull so this bag of thongs is driving me crazy just sitting there.
It has to go this weekend!

I hate the thought of disposing fabric in landfill; I recycle everything that I can recycle. However, surely I can't recycle thongs?

AIBU to just close my eyes and put it in the trash?

Label the bag as rags and take to charity shop as they can get money per so much weight of rags. The rags themselves are recycled and used as stuffing etc

balonzz · 27/07/2019 09:32

I understand that there is a section on Ebay for certain customers who buy used underwear.

PoptartPoptart · 27/07/2019 09:33

Take it to a clothes recycling bank. Items that cannot be passed on to charities or worn again can have the fabric recycled.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/07/2019 09:34

Clothes recycling bank, anything that can't be used as clothing is recycled for scraps etc.

underthebridgedowntown · 27/07/2019 09:34

The IKEA nearest me has a fabric recycling bin at the entrance, but there often are ones at big supermarkets too

Greyworm · 27/07/2019 09:34

Can you take it to the tip and put it in the clothes section? Or does that end up in landfill?

alittlerayofsunshine · 27/07/2019 09:34

@insideoutsider

Just take it to the council skips - and put it in the clothes recycling.

They all have these.

StripeySocks29 · 27/07/2019 09:35

I don’t think a charity shop (or anyone else for that matter) will want to sort through your used underwear Confused

amawaster · 27/07/2019 09:49

Luckily people that work in the waste industry are a bit less prissy than PP. I agree a clothes bank or council recycling centre is the best place to anonymously recycle your old pants!

Cheby · 27/07/2019 09:56

Sell them on eBay. You’ll make money from weirdos.

user1493494961 · 27/07/2019 10:00

Clothes Bank, they sell for rags. We have a Salvation Army one near us.

TwistyTop · 27/07/2019 10:07

There should be a clothes bank somewhere near you. They sort through stuff and will have some sort of use for them.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/07/2019 10:13

I put stuff thats unsuitable for a charity shop into a bag clearly marked 'rags' and put then into a clothing bank

Shelbybear · 27/07/2019 10:14

I think both these charities take underwear, certainly bras can't remember if they take pants too, look them up. You do have to pay for postage to send to them though but a great cause.

Label the bag as rags and take to charity shop

As a volunteer we will love you forever if you do this. Happy to take old socks, bras and knickers for recycling. SO much nicer when it's labelled as rags or recycling and we can just tip it straight into the sack.

TheNightof1000Fans · 27/07/2019 10:17

Just put it in the bin!!!

DontCallMeShitley · 27/07/2019 10:20

I agree with labelling as rags for the charity shop (but check they take rags first, most do).

Don't try to sell them on Ebay unless you want to be banned, it is against the rules.

recrudescence · 27/07/2019 10:22

Keep until Christmas and then loop together to make a festive garland.

CecilyP · 27/07/2019 10:36

I think Cheby's suggestion might be the best one! Scrap value of clothes is about 4p per lb. Don't even know if 40 thongs would even weigh a lb. I saw a program about a massive Oxfam warehouse where clothes not fit for sale were sold on to be used for wadding, but I doubt if thongs would be suitable with their mix of fabrics and elastic. The unsuitable items went into an incinerator used for heating; don't know how much warmth you'd get out of 40 thongs. If you do donate, please label your bag 'recycling only'.

TheSerenDipitY · 27/07/2019 10:52

there used to be a charity in some of the African countries, they wanted knickers and bra's as if a woman is wearing underwear it lessens her chances of rape, apparently it means her parents will kick up a fuss and they will be caught... just an idea... not sure if it is still going

Nautiloid · 27/07/2019 10:53

I'd sell them on eBay to fetishists with no shame.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2019 11:04

Thanks OP, and others with the rags suggestion. I also have a load of old thongs and crappy worn out socks, cluttering up my underwear drawer but it felt a bit weird putting them in the fabric recycling bin, I never thought to label the bag as rags.

Will do this today, a perfect job for a rainy Saturday why does it always do this when it's been hot and sunny in the week when I've been at work.

Mumminmum · 27/07/2019 11:06

H&M will give you a £5 voucher for a bag of clothes.

sandgrown · 27/07/2019 11:09

I know that Oxfam recycle everything they can't sell so its a good idea to donate for rags. If you just put them in the bin as suggested by a PP they will end up.in landfill .
