To ask who packs nicely?

I’ve been away with some family this week.
Oh my god!
Packing goals or what!?
I chuck everything back in my suitcase but in theirs they have packing cubes.
Some could write a dissertation on the art of folding.
They have bought so much more than me but my suitcase is bulging and theirs has space.
Aibu to ask who else packs well and has anyone any tips?

My sister and best mate....both long term air crew-their packing is like a work of art I shared a case with my friend on my last holiday (to save £50.00! ) and she managed to fit in our combined stuff so neatly, including two sets of snorkelling gear... I was so impressed with her skills 😍

Michaelbaubles · 27/07/2019 16:13

I use packing cubes - don’t find them wasteful at all, they’ve done a good half a dozen trips already and are still going strong. And they help you decide what to pack better too, because you’re not just whacking things in.

Thequaffle · 27/07/2019 16:16

I loveeee me a packing cube! So convenient and keeps all your stuff nice!

DorothyParkersCat · 27/07/2019 16:20

The packing by outfit groups (pants/skirts + various tops that go with them) into one cube that Sonia uses in that video I linked works very well for short trips. It's just so easy having all the things that go together in one place rather thn hunting deep in the case.

PestoCaffeinisto · 27/07/2019 16:26

Another packing cubes fiend here. We have a different coloured set each. We usually split stuff between suitcases in case they get mislaid by the airline and this makes it super easy to find everything when we arrive.

Aragog · 27/07/2019 20:37

I don't find packing cubes wasteful either. I've used the same ones many many tines over.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 27/07/2019 21:07

I am a rolling fanatic! I tried packing cubes but reckon I can fit more in just by rolling. I may try again though as I love the idea of similar things being together!

CMOTDibbler · 27/07/2019 21:15

I travel a lot for work. I love packing cubes, and use small ones to have underwear in one, gym stuff in another and so on. I cram them full to get maximum compression. T shirts/skorts get rolled into another, but when travelling long haul my 'going home' outfit goes into a plastic bag separately so I can just grab that as I'll often be changing in a loo out of my business outfit to my plane one.
All my 'hanging up' clothes go in the separate compartment of my suitcase. I lay them on the lid, and then fold it all together which reduces creasing massively.
My washbag is a hanging up one, so that goes in last unfolded. Jewellery is in a little plastic divided craft box.

Oysterbabe · 27/07/2019 21:27

I'd never heard of packing cubes until today and now I feel like I must have them. We rarely go anywhere so I really don't need them do I? Blush

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 27/07/2019 21:27

Sorry, my mind was on other things when I read the title!

One of the batman actors had a nice package!

I like rolling up items, choosing clothes carefully - so light and crease resistant.

If you are bring clean clothes home then you are over packing. I like to plan out what I'm wearing everyday. I take essentials only and thin out make up bag, hair stuff and jewellery. I have a thin fast drying towel.

24hourhomeedderandcarer · 27/07/2019 21:53

we go away every 4-6 weeks, its not abroad(uk holidays) but still take 4 suit cases as im packing for 4 adults(kids are 8 and 14 but 5ft 2 and 6ft 2)and we do fill the boot up

i roll everything as that takes up less space than folded

i also have size mens 13 feet(yes i am a woman)and J cup breasts so i put socks and rolled up knickers in my empty shoes and bra cups

my 14 y old is a size mens 12 and i do the same with his shoes as well

dirty washing gets put in to a black bag then rolled nicely in the middle then i pack the clean around it

we do have the advantage or the car though and we have a big boot so i dont know if the suitcases would pass airplane standards

Likethebattle · 27/07/2019 22:54

On holiday the first plastic bag we get at a spar etc become ‘dirty bag’ all dirty clothes go in there. So one case becomes dirty bag and half used toiletries, other bag is cleaner stuff, shoes, books and souvenirs. I fold but it gets messed up with you case getting rolled in different directions as you travel. My mum used to stand for hours ironing and packing..,,screw that. Folded and into the case is as good as it gets in Chateau Battle. I think my mum took way too much stuff. I do like the idea of cubes.

S1naidSucks · 27/07/2019 23:05

I’m an awesome packer. (Large headed emoji) I use techniques picked up from YouTube. I couldn’t be bothered with cubes, as I’d have to plan my packing around them. I roll clothes, can fold jeans in such a way, that they look like kid’s jeans, fold hoodies so that I can use the hood to hold them and fold knickers and pair socks so they are flat, so easier to pack. I use plastic food bags for electrical wires and toiletries, so they can easier be examined if I have to open my case.

Yay! I have finally found something to boast about on Mumsnet. 😁

funmummy48 · 28/07/2019 08:49

I'm a roller. 😊

LibbyJeffries · 28/07/2019 10:01

Can anyone recommend me their packing cubes? I think I'm convinced!

CMOTDibbler · 28/07/2019 13:19

My packing cubes are Amazon basics - cheap and cheerful, but seem to be lasting well and I abuse my luggage

bellinisurge · 28/07/2019 13:26

I'll join you @S1naidSucks - my dh just gave me a huge pile of stuff and a bag to pack them in - we tag team and deploy the best man for the job in our house. It was a piece of piss with loads of room to spare. I asked him to bring down more.

Nautiloid · 28/07/2019 13:38

Yes. I'm not very organised at home but am super organised on holiday. I think it's partly my mum's influence, and partly that I find because there's a limited amount to do I don't feel overwhelmed by it. I'm the same in hospital, everything very tidy and sorted all the time. I've been showered with proper clothes on the moment the catheter came out after all 3 surgeries I've had and two were fairly major.
I don't even pack dirty clothes to bring home from holiday, wash the lot.
Then I come back to my house which is probably a shit tip by many people's standards.
I'm strange.

My husband was in the army and he taught me how to pack. I roll everything and then slot pants, socks in the spaces. I always put a binliner in to put dirty clothes in too.
My daughter has gone to South Africa for 2 weeks and I managed to get 2 weeks worth of clothes/hiking shoes etc in a cabin size case.

7yo7yo · 30/07/2019 17:48

I saw this today!

S1naidSucks · 31/07/2019 13:06

It’s wrongly packed, OP. The minute you try to remove anything, the whole lot will end up a mess.

7yo7yo · 31/07/2019 17:28

@S1naidSucks but it looks so nice! Grin
