To be sobbing over a birthday cake

meepmoop · 26/07/2019 19:32

DS is having a birthday party on Sunday so I'm making him a car cake. 2 tiers and everything.

I've spent ages making it as only have space in the oven for one cake. I've just gone to cut the base cake in half and it's not cooked so I've got to do it all again and still need to buttercream and ice it.

I'm literally crying over cake,

Just go out and buy one. Its not worth crying over, and he won't pay more than a minutes attention

PhilOmenon · 26/07/2019 19:34

How old is he? TBH I'd just buy a supermarket cake rather than stress yourself out.

recall · 26/07/2019 19:34

Step away from the cake !
You have another day ...deep breaths ..
Console yourself that you are an awesome mum making a fucking car cake !!!! Shock

recall · 26/07/2019 19:36

Could you go and buy two plainish cakes ? And just decorate them ??

SavoyCabbage · 26/07/2019 19:36

Don't panic, you can fix anything with icing.

I've made 27 cakes for my dc now and what you have to remember is
A) you are doing it fir your own child, not anybody else.
B) kids only care about the icing. Unless it's got smarties on and then they on,y care about the smarties.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 26/07/2019 19:37

Can't you just chuck it back in the oven for a bit? It's a birthday cake and it's going to be iced, you can scrape off any bits that get too dark on the top.

Always check cakes with a metal skewer before deciding their cooked in future. If it comes out clean the cake is done.

PhilOmenon · 26/07/2019 19:38

Or buy plain cakes and decorate them.

growlingbear · 26/07/2019 19:39

I agree. Buy a cake. Or at least buy some Sainsbury value madeira cakes that are rectangular in shape, so you can easily cut them into car shapes, cover them in ready rolled coloured icing and use Oreos for wheels etc

meepmoop · 26/07/2019 19:40

He's erm only 2,
mostly Ive told everyone I'm making it and I've wasted a day so need something to show for it. (I'm also very pregnant so probably being a tad dramatic.)

My mum has now gone to the shops to get more supplies for me.

Annoyingly I did put a skewer in and it did come out clean so not entirely sure what happened

cestlavielife · 26/07/2019 19:41

He is two
He won't care
Buy one
Supermarkets have loads

LoafOfSellotape · 26/07/2019 19:43

Scoop out the under cooked bit and fill it with icing.

SheldonSaysSo · 26/07/2019 19:45

Or scoop out the undercooked middle and fill it with sweets? Then when you cut into it the sweets pour out (think its call a piñata cake)

WisestIsShe · 26/07/2019 19:46

Agree with PPS, make it a pinata cake. It'll be lovely.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 26/07/2019 19:47

Microwave it

YouJustDoYou · 26/07/2019 19:47

B) kids only care about the icing. Unless it's got smarties on and then they on,y care about the smarties

Hahaha, yes, this!!! Honestly, try not to worry. I used to handmade the sponge (and cry over it) too, but since discovering the Aldi mix for chocolate sponge I've never looked back. I'm sure he'll love whatever cake you make:)

Duck90 · 26/07/2019 19:47

Oh no! I’m sorry, feel your pain. You will laugh one day, but today have a wee sob. Then go out and buy one.

Sunnydays999 · 26/07/2019 19:50

Go buy one

Waveysnail · 26/07/2019 19:51

Go to supermarket and buy plain Madeira sponge then shape - no one will know! That's what I did. Tesco's do some in loaf shape. So cut and ice

ControversialFerret · 26/07/2019 19:52

Buy a couple of plain sponge cakes and cut and decorate them. Please don't cry over cake!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/07/2019 19:55

I was going to suggest what LoadsofSellotape said but instead of icing, fill the hollow with ice-cream!

I'm sure your son will have a lovely day - and so will you.

42isthemeaning · 26/07/2019 19:57

Oh op I feel your pain. Similar has happened to me more than once. I used to spend many hours creating the perfect cakes for my dc (they were far from perfect!) On one notoriously stressful dc birthday occasion, my rather artistic BIL who was visiting, stayed up until 2am trying to design a Thomas the tank engine face for one of my failed cakes. I eventually realised that buying the plain cake and decorating it was so much easier than making it all from scratch. It was also easier to drink Ginand / or Winewhilst undertaking the whole task. Make sure you don't wear yourself out tonight. Your dc will love it no matter what!

FlamedToACrisp · 26/07/2019 19:57

You should use my father's method for testing a cake: put in a knife, and if it comes out clean... put all the other knives in and clean them as well!

Seriously, don't worry about a cake.

Howdidido · 26/07/2019 19:57

Another saying get some plain cake from the shop and ice it yourself. No one will know.
He's 2. He doesn't care. You're putting too much pressure on yourself Cake

Tartyflette · 26/07/2019 19:57

I'd try and rescue it by scooping out the uncooked stuff and then putting in a 'stuffing' (cream, fruit, sweets, chocolate) then reassembling.
It will look and taste lovely and people will be amazed at your skill and ingenuity. Go for it!
