to blinking hate doing the food shop?

Fed up of going to do 'the big shop'. Why does it need doing every week???
I've come to two options: stop eating or online shopping. Seeing as DP and DD probably want to keep eating, I might have to resort to online.
Any recommendations on which supermarket to use? Currently shop in Morrisons but only for convenience as it's closest, will try anywhere.

Online all the way.

I like Sainsbury. They're reliable. Ocado's fresh stuff was very dodgy, especially for the price.
Once you've set up a shopping list of weekly essentials that you get on repeat then it really speeds up. Sit late at night with a glass of wine and do the shop. Very relaxed and easy.

didireallysaythat · 26/07/2019 19:55

Ocado fan here. I get the same slot every fortnight automatically (but can change it) and I've chosen items I want every 2 weeks, every month, every two months etc which automatically loads into my basket when it's time. They price match on brands so you get vouchers off the next shop. The app is great - you can barcode scan the item you're reordering too (maybe they all do this now).

I hate food shopping too. About ten years ago I bought an upright, nine drawer, freezer. It changed the game! Combined with my regular fridge freezer I do one shop a month at Tesco, another at Aldi. I cook a lot of things in bulk and freeze them. We just buy milk, yoghurt and the odd top up bit of veg. It saves us money too, we alway went a little "monkey see, monkey wants" and ended up buying more when we went weekly. I didn't like supermarket deliveries as I like to pick the best choice of veg, and I think what they brought was rubbish veg!

Waveysnail · 26/07/2019 19:57

Click and collect (we only have asda or tescos). Can do it the night before usually on app on phone, pick up next day - perfect.

gabsdot45 · 26/07/2019 20:09

I too hate the "Food" shop. Particularly bringing everything in from the car and putting it away.
I've recently started training DD to put the shopping away and she enjoys it so hopefully someday soon she'll take over that horrible job completely.
I got very excited recently as our local Lidl, where I do all my shopping started a delivery service. However when I placed my order and went to pay they added 18Euro to the price for delivery and admin costs. I couldn't justify that so I went myself.

checkeredredshorts · 26/07/2019 20:12

I've only ever used ASDA so can't compare with other stores. They do sub often but always better than what you've ordered for the same price. Very reasonable about refunds when products are damaged or short dated (you keep the product if you didn't realise till later and log it online).

I pay a fiver a month for unlimited deliveries and would never ever go back to doing the shop myself.

You pick the hour slot you want and they literally bring it to your door in crates. Job done.

Gracie300 · 26/07/2019 20:15

Ocado is brilliant, and if you could have got the same products cheaper elsewhere you get a voucher for that amount to use in next shop. Really quick, very very rarely substitutions, and drivers always much more helpful/friendly than other supermarkets.

Limer · 26/07/2019 20:16

Meal plan so you know what you'll need on each given day of the week. Then definitely go online for the big/heavy/storecupboard/frozen/cleaning stuff. If you're in the habit of doing a top-up shop for bread/milk etc., you can pick up fresh meat/veg/fruit at the same time.

PuppyMonkey · 26/07/2019 20:26

Instead of spending half an hour doing an online order and then having to wait in for it to be delivered, I spend half an hour doing a full weekly shop in Aldi.

Gazelda · 26/07/2019 20:34

I'm a huge Tesco online fan. Takes a few mins to do. Weekly order. I get the midweek delivery pass. And it makes the Big Christmas Shop far less traumatic - order your delivery slot weeks ahead and add to the order over time.

HeronLanyon · 26/07/2019 20:35

I do a ‘big shop’ once a month by delivery - all heavy/household stuff. Other than that I shop for day to day fruit veg etc when needed. But I am surrounded by good supermarkets local/walkable/on way home from work etc.
I too hated when I used to do a big weekly shop. Took forever then putting it away took forever and bought loads of things I didn’t really need.

Flupibass · 26/07/2019 20:44

Tesco online shop for years. Always on time, easy to get delivery slots even if you order the night before, very good giving refunds if you decide something is not quite right. I didn’t know about the year delivery pass, I do the monthly one. Will look into it.

MidsomerBurgers · 26/07/2019 20:45

Ocado. It's not expensive. If the big brands have an offer in Tesco, it'll be on offer in every supermarket, including Ocado.

user87382294757 · 26/07/2019 20:48

I alternate between Waitrose and Iceland...as both have free delivery...Iceland for freezer (free over £35) and then Waitrose for other things! (free over £60) then I just top up with milk etc at local Co-op.

Did Ocado for awhile but they started charging for delivery again...although they are trying to give me offers to come back.

user87382294757 · 26/07/2019 20:49

Ocado is looking to replace its Waitrose food with M and S..but not sure when.

ysmaem · 26/07/2019 20:49

Best thing I ever did was switch to online grocery shopping. I now do it lying in bed, with a glass of wine and watching rubbish on netflix.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 26/07/2019 20:51

We have done our weekly shop online for years so if we go to a supermarket its just for a couple of things. We used to use Tescos but we use Morrisons now. I like that all their meat is British and they substitute less than Tesco. Morrisons website seems really fast in comparison to Tesco so I can do a weekly shop in 20 minutes.

Choice4567 · 26/07/2019 21:27

See now I used Morrison's online shop once. They individually wrapped each apple in a box, in weird tissue and then in plastic. There just seemed an awful lot of excess packaging in the whole delivery and I couldn't face using them again. Do they still do this?

Bottledate · 26/07/2019 21:42

Sainsbury's online shopper here: Always used to shop there as it was nearest until we moved, by which time I was 'used' to their stuff. Get staples regularly delivered and great for heavy things (I don't drive). They email in the morning to warn of anything that's not coming (I opt for no subs) and have been great with any refunds.

I go to local shops for bread/milk/fruit/meat generally and then we'll sometimes do a family shop elsewhere - has novelty value and toddler copes because it's not a boring routine necessity!
