So people are saying on social media that the chihuahua "plucked" from a garden down south wasn't actually taken by a seagull at all.

Searches have been called off. I've read people saying that the dog had actually been sold and this was a worst ever cover story Shock

So what does everyone think really happened? Could a seagull take a 2kg dog?

PS, I did look for other posts about this and couldn't find any. Apols if this is a TAAT or anything's been deleted for any reason.

this!

We have kebabs bigger than your forearm.

I think the story is fake but... We also have seagulls that eat rabbits whole. Flying thugs.

PerfectPenquins · 26/07/2019 15:52

I could absolutely believe it, we have the buggers beating on our roof! They are huge and pretty strong. I also have a chihuahua and she is so tiny and light. The search was called off because people decided to harass the volunteers, horrible things said online, following them in the streets while looking etc nasty cowardly people.

Stressedout10 · 26/07/2019 15:52

Could be true I saw a bird of prey take a cat from the local high school playing field

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 26/07/2019 15:52

You're not BU to wonder. I'm in exactly the same state of mind: contemplating. To be honest, I have my doubts about the story Shock

heronontoast · 26/07/2019 15:53

The rabbit in the youtube clip is dead when the seagull is swallowing it - what killed it?
The seagull didn't carry it away in it's beak.

Completely off topic but where on earth do you live I think I need to move Grin

IntoValhalla · 26/07/2019 15:53

I’ve seen seagulls swallow stolen ice cream cones etc whole, but that YouTube video above of the seagull swallowing the rabbit whole is something else Confused

mrswx · 26/07/2019 15:54

I've seen a seagull swoop down and take a duckling once - still much smaller than a chihuahua though.

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 15:54

I’ve seen a seagull swoop and grab and swallow an entire chicken leg, but I highly doubt it could pick up a small dog.

Owls on the other hand definitely. My friends little dog got picked off in California.

herculepoirot2 · 26/07/2019 15:54

A small chihuahua, probably. But in its beak, not its talons.

mumwon · 26/07/2019 15:57

gross story (thank you dh who witnessed this) - dh came out of corner shop & observed large seagull (I am sure they are mixed with pterodactyls here) attempting to swallow large dead rat - not sure that it killed it (wouldn't be surprised their beaks are nasty!
I rang local council to ask if someone can come out to check "Oh contact shops owners so they can call in local company!"

Heckythump1 · 26/07/2019 15:57

I once had a massive seagull stand on my head and steal my ice cream that I hadn't even take a lick of yet! They are bloody massive and have huge gobs, so I wouldn't be surprised!

JaneJeffer · 26/07/2019 15:57

It could have grabbed it by the collar with its beak and dropped it somewhere?

Nesssie · 26/07/2019 15:59

heronontoast They usually drop them from a height to either kill/stun and then shake them to finish them off.

SerendipityJane · 26/07/2019 16:00

Given some posters here seem to think seagulls have webbed feet, I would be inclined to take a lot of discussion here with a truckload of salt ....

Weren't eagles supposed to be able to carry off lambs and small children ? At least when farmers wanted them killed ....

elQuintoConyo · 26/07/2019 16:01

One stole my toffee apple right out of my hand on Brighton pier. I was 36 hysterical.

But I doubt one would take a chihuahua.

Spinnaret · 26/07/2019 16:02

I can believe it. Swoops down, scoops up in beak and flies not very far. Drops/smashes small dog from height and scoffs it down. Even if it didn't manage to eat it whole, a 2kg dog is pretty small so no guarantee anyone would find any remains, which would be liable to being eaten by foxes anyway.

Seagulls do have webbed feet though Hmm

CrocodilesCry · 26/07/2019 16:04

@IceIceCoffee

The boyfriend who was the one home with the dog has remained silent. To me that speaks volumes

Yes I've read stuff about that too Hmm

Just realised I had never thought about seagull feet, but then googled it...

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 16:05

Heron gulls have got webbed feet

fraxion · 26/07/2019 16:05

The seagulls here are absolute monsters but I can't imagine them snatching a small dog, a sausage roll definitely and anything that looks remotely like food in your hand, it's gone.

RubbingHimSourly · 26/07/2019 16:06

One stole and tried to eat a kitten in my neck of the woods. If it wasn't for a fast acting neighbour it would have been seagull poop a few days later.

Kitten was 12 weeks or so too so not tiny.
