I did this 5 quid of petrol then filled with diesel didn't cause a problem. Partner did it with a van but filled it with petrol, no diesel, didn't realise. Had to have it drained

I once went in a Diesel car with a colleague (his car) who accidentally put petrol in it. It was about 1/3 Diesel and 2/3 petrol. The car was fine for over 100km, then slowed down and was stuttering. We made it to the next rest place and stopped there. I noticed an odd smell and opened the door. The flames shot up from beneath the car. It fully burned out but we were luckily unharmed.

Mia184 😱😱😱. That's terrible. Glad you were both ok.

I did this about 3 months ago. £7 of petrol and then filled the tank with diesel. It had already got about a quarter of a tank of diesel so was a petrol sandwich. Drove 30 mins home without a splutter. Started the next day and the garage told me to get some special stuff to add to the tank from Halfords. I kept diesel topped up and all has been fine until the last few weeks. My engine malfunction light has come on and it's something to do with the exhaust. It needs a new valve....I don't know if it's anything to do with the petrol incident, however I'm glad the garage are doing it under its warranty as it would have cost me £1500.

Gertie it was very scary. The rest place was filled with trucks and no one had a functioning fire extinguisher.

Ive done this. Put £30 in petrol and realised my mistake when engine ran rough. £200 to have it drained by AA.

Diesel in a petrol is far worse and much more expensive to fix as it clogs the injectors amongst other nasties - which is why in england you cant put a diesel nossle in a petrol car unless said car is ancient!

Thanks all - it's a 2012 Vauxhall Astra - I phone my mechanic soon after I put petrol in and he said the full up with Diesel 🤔
