Drawing a blank here can anyone help? Want to buy some ready made snacks to go in DS 4 lunchbox but can't think. So far have pom bears and Yeo valley framage frais but what would a healthier alternative be? I sometimes mix natural yogurt with a small amount of jam instead. Any other ideas? Must be very lazy! Thanks!!

Just to clarify, by healthy I mean low in salt and sugar. Thanks!

Chopped strawberries, cucumber, slices of cheese, mini breadsticks.

user1493413286 · 26/07/2019 13:52

I know it’s not the cheapest way but I often get the 3 bits of fruit for a £1 from the supermarket as then DD can have watermelon, melon and something else in her lunch in a week without trying to make our way through a massive melon.

ANiceLuxury · 26/07/2019 13:52

Following as there is so much lunch box rubbish out there!

tealandteal · 26/07/2019 13:52

Are there any allergen limitations imposed by the school? Carrot sticks, apple slices with peanut butter, popcorn (not with sugar/salt obv), egg "muffins" are all popular here but DS is younger.

MT2017 · 26/07/2019 13:53

Ok, depending on his taste and your idea of healthy:

Mini breadsticks
Raisins / dried fruit (mango etc)
Apple/grape fruit bags
Babybel cheese

Teddybear45 · 26/07/2019 13:55

Vegetarian sushi supplemented with fruit / veg / hummus is really popular at my DN school. Parents usually buy the M&S or Waitrose packets when they get reduced and stock up for the week.

NannyR · 26/07/2019 13:57

I got a bag of frozen falafel from Morrison's (I think the brand was Me Too). They were really tasty and didn't need cooking, I just put them in my lunch box and they were defrosted by lunchtime.

DontFundHate · 26/07/2019 14:06

Ooh yes he loves bread sticks! Can I buy plain popcorn?! He would.love dried fruit too. Often has raisins but never thought to vary it. Thanks!

An apple.

user1471539385 · 26/07/2019 14:25

We have a popcorn machine that pops the kernels using hot air, so no oil, salt or sugar. It takes seconds, and you can pop the amount you need for the lunchbox.

user1471539385 · 26/07/2019 14:26

Dried chopped dates and cranberries are popular with DS, although they are higher in sugar than fresh fruit, so limited in quantity.

PooWillyBumBum · 26/07/2019 14:30

Lidl do mini veg like tiny cucumbers. Dollop of hummus, cucumbers, few cherry toms, mini breadsticks, some cubes of cheese and some fruit. Falafels are popular with my DD. I believe you can also buy ready chopped carrot sticks.

PopWentTheWeasel · 26/07/2019 14:34

malt loaf bars, sesame snaps (I know they have sugar on them but better than chocolate).

borisisbonkers · 26/07/2019 14:34

Yes was popping into say Lidl do all sorts of snack sized peppers, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. Plastic heavy though.

thaegumathteth · 26/07/2019 14:38

My kids have

Rice cakes / crackers / breadsticks
Cottage cheese / dairy Lea
Chopped up cucumber / carrot or whole cherry tomatoes
Babybel
Melon / mango / apple
Almonds or Brazil nuts
Tortilla wraps with ham / cheese / dairy Lea / chicken etc (also egg and tuna but not at school)
The fruit purée sachet things meant for babies and toddlers - not low in sugar obviously.

I used to take cold roast and new potatoes in my packed lunch but neither of my kids will eat them.

Leeds2 · 26/07/2019 14:48

Banana, satsuma.
Pot of low sugar jelly.
Chicken drumstick.
Cocktail sausages.

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 26/07/2019 14:55

Babybel always a hit here
Asda do mini pitta breads which you can do with a dip and veg sticks. Or with tinned tuna, tinned sweet corn and just enough mayonnaise to mix it. Mine love the tuna mix with crushed up tortilla chips but it’d probably go soggy in a lunchbox.

I think sugar is worse than fat when they’re young so I wouldn’t stress about using cocktail sausages or some nice mini sausage rolls. If I do sausages for tea i always cook a couple extra for them to have in their lunchbox the next day

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 26/07/2019 15:00

Oh and ham or grated cheese wrap is really quick to do, with some quickly sliced cucumber, baby tomatoes and pre done carrot sticks, babybel and Pom bears / mini cheddars, then grapes or box of raisins for dessert. It’s my standard lunch box and I find the kids prefer the routine of the same things which is fine as it makes it easier on me!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 26/07/2019 15:05

Tesco Meditarranean cous cous. Costs 50p, and all you do is add water to it, fork it about a bit, plonk in a plastic tub. A lot less faff than pasta/sandwiches/wraps, plus it's enough for about three or four servings.
Cheese straws
Biltong
Granola/cereal bars
Yoghurt in tubes - you can freeze them so they're still relatively cool.
Dried fruit is always a winner for my DC. For some reason they won't eat the fresh fruit in a lunchbox, but will always eat the dried stuff.

Pretty much agree with most of the other PPs on other suggestions, but just wanted to mention I don't know where you are OP, but all three schools my DC have attended have an absolute blanket ban on any kinds of nuts at all, so might be an idea to check.

cricketmum84 · 26/07/2019 15:11

DD (10) loves those I do ideally wrapped packs of 5 wholewheat crackers with a little pot of chopped chicken or ham and some veg.

Yoghurt tubes are great frozen, keeps the lunch cool and usually defrosted by the time they come to eat them.

cricketmum84 · 26/07/2019 15:12

I do ideally = individually. New nails making it difficult to type lol!

DontFundHate · 26/07/2019 19:03

Thanks everyone some fab ideas!

Cherry tomatoes, cucumber wheels, carrot sticks with hummus, cheese cubes, grapes, little tub of pasta salad, chicken drumstick, sushi, mango with greek honey yoghurt. . .

OhFuckingLisaMorgan · 26/07/2019 19:08

This week our's have had:
A tomato
A pear or apple
A banana
A yogurt
A carrot
A cheese string
A popcorn
A croissant
And water

That's lasts them all day until pick up a 4.30pm. They often have a biscuit or something in the car on the way home as we don't get in till 6pm.

I'm normally good with school lunches but I honestly can't be arsed now they are in holiday club!
