Mummy Daddy

I've been reading a thread where the poster calls her Mum/Dad Mammy and Daddy. My Irish friend also (adult) does this.

My own children (teens) call me and their father Mummy and Daddy but refer to us as Mum/Dad when speaking to others.
AIBU to think this is ok?
Is it a bit odd for adult DC to say Mummy/Daddy?

I call mine Mother Dearest when I’m after something. I get Darling Daughter when she wants something from me

AquaPris · 25/07/2019 20:39

And I am not posh

PolkadotLollipop · 25/07/2019 20:41

It used to make me cringe too, OP and then my youngest child grew up and never ‘grew out’ of the ‘Mummy’ stage, it just stuck. She’s 17 now, so I don’t see it changing.

omafiet · 25/07/2019 20:44

Mum and mummy are considered to be posh here, I cringe when I hear it

"Mum" is considered posh? Where do you live, in a Catherine Cookson book? 😄

RingtheBells · 25/07/2019 20:57

To me it seems stranger starting with mummy and daddy then changing to mum and dad than just keeping with mummy and daddy, I think this is why we were always mum and dad

SongforSal · 25/07/2019 20:58

I'm 'Mother' to DD19 and MUMMMMMMM to the shouty teenage DS!

underneaththeash · 25/07/2019 21:02

We’re not posh and I call my mum mummy too. As do my 2 brothers. My 13,11 and 8 yo call me mummy as well. I’m 44.

WhiteDust · 25/07/2019 21:17

I'm really happy to read these replies! If we're out they'll address me as Mum and it sounds awkward. Straight back to Mummy when we're out of (other people's) earshot though! 👍🏻

Mine use Mummy mostly at home but the 11yr old now refers to me as Mum to other people. Youngest calls me ‘Mumma’ and DH gets ‘Dadda’ but that’s just her playing on being the baby!

I really don’t mind, as long as it’s a variation of Mother! There are only 4 people in the whole world who can call me that, anyone can call me by my first name....

CherryPavlova · 25/07/2019 21:40

My mother in laws children (youngest is 48) call her mummy. My adult children call us mummy and daddy but refer to us as their mother and father.
Most of our friends are called mummy and daddy by their young adult children.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 25/07/2019 21:45

Oh I don't refer to them as Mummy and Daddy in conversation with anyone outside of the family, just if I'm talking to them directly or with my siblings.

MaryShelley1818 · 25/07/2019 21:56

I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone past the age of about 5yrs old saying mammy and daddy. I’m not sure if it’s regional, it would be very embarrassing round here to hear a grown adult say it.

Billythecat · 25/07/2019 22:10

I've always called my parents Mummy and Daddy and I'm now 29! I have no plans to stop as it would feel weird to call them anything else and that's what my mum always called her parents. My DH does the same for his parents, as do all of his siblings. I do refer to them as my 'mum and dad' when talking about them to other people.
