To ask what could possibly be causing this bruising?

I have always bruised easily but it seems at the moment I am getting lots of small bruises on my arms, legs and hips. I first noticed them in Feb. I had a blood test in the middle of last month and my results were ok. The doctor suggested I get some over the counter iron as my ferritin is 22. My tsh was 4 so I have asked him to up my thyroxine which he has done. But what else could be causing these bruises? I am getting very concerned by them.

Do you take any other medicines? Do you have any hobbies?
And arms, legs, hips are the sort of places I would bang from walking into things etc, are you a clumsy sort of person?

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 17:13

I only take the mini pill other than the thyroxine. My hobbies are fairly sedentary other than walking. I am a bit clumsy and have always had a number of bruises. It just seems to be a fair bit more than normal. I did wonder if it could be from having both a toddler and a baby climbing on me but then I'm not sure whether that would cause bruising.

I suffer from the random toddler bruises.

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 17:51

Hmmm so the children causing them could be a possibility then. If that's the case they wont be stopping anytime soon.

What was your platelet count? It could be low platelets.

QuestionableMouse · 25/07/2019 18:27

I'm generally covered in bruises from my nephews. Those little hands and feet seem perfect for making bruises! Also a bit anemic which isn't helping.

If they're normal bruises I wouldn't worry too mugh but if they get massive or start looking different for you then go back and get checked again.

PaperFlowers4 · 25/07/2019 18:29

I had this exact thing last year. Bruising all over my legs but blood results normal. I took vitamin c and iron and they went away within a few weeks.

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 18:37

Hi my platelets were 273. It says the reference range is 140-400. So ok I think.
That's interesting paperflowers4 I have been taking vitamin C and floradix but I don't think the floradix is helping. I've been taking it for quite some time now. Unsure about the vitamin C as I only recently started taking it

Could be B12 deficiency/pernicious anaemia? If your thyroid problem is due to autoimmune disease then you are more likely to have another autoimmune condition.

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 19:10

Hi I requested the doctor checked my B12 but he has refused. My thyroid condition is due to hashimotos and thyroid uk suggests I may not be able to absorb B12. I'm not sure what to do about that though if the doctor wont check my levels.

Allfednonedead · 25/07/2019 19:31

I had random bruises all over my legs for about six months. At the time I had undiagnosed Hashimoto’s, so that may be related.
After six months, they just went away.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 25/07/2019 19:47

i have hashimotos, and bruise like a peach ....always have even before diagnosis

dh has left finger marks on me from ordinary larking about, I recently brushed/scraped my leg down the side of a wooden bed and had a purple bruise the size of my palm appear. Also had a cracker all down my inside fore arm after having a go with a child's bow and arrow, that took weeks to go !
It is inconsistent though, sometimes I'll take a bash and nothing at all! Even though it feels bruised.

I keep meaning to look into B vitamins, but I don't.

yunalis · 25/07/2019 19:55

Mine are because I'm lupus anticoagulant positive. I can bruise anything 🤣

MyNameIsArthur · 25/07/2019 19:57

Hi OP

Could be lots of reasons for excessive bruising. Is good news your blood counts are normal though.

I don't know if this link us any help to you:

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 20:03

Oh they all look like very serious conditions in that link. I hope its not anything like that. Although I am concerned it could be.
Its reassuring to read of others with hashimotos bruising easily as perhaps it could just be that. I think my TSH being 4 is not great.
Does that mean you have lupus yunalis?

OP posts:
yunalis · 25/07/2019 20:09

No, it's really badly named. It doesn't mean you have lupus and it's prothombotic (so the opposite of an anticoagulant). They tested me for it because I was always covered in bruises when they saw me apparently.

Lellochip · 25/07/2019 20:18

Did you have any other symptoms/reasons to suspect b12? You can get at home tests if your GP is being difficult

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 20:19

How strange they should name it that. I was curious because my mum has lupus but has never mentioned that condition to me. If it is unrelated then chances are she dowsnt have it and that's why. I'm certain they have not tested me for that.

OP posts:
HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 20:23

I initially suspected anaemia as I was breathless, tired, hair falling out and weak limbs. Joint pains etc. However the blood tests suggested not that and everything but the hair falling out and bruising has improved since upping my thyroxine. I am no longer getting the horrible breathless sensation at all. Still tired but I'm up in the night with two little ones. I don't think I'm excessively tired considering. I wonder if a home test could be worth a try. I suppose it would rule a deficiency out at least.

OP posts:
Lellochip · 25/07/2019 20:42

The ferritin level is probably low enough to give anaemia symptoms, so if you're taking iron you might perk up pretty quickly?

I do the at home blood tests because I've found the docs quite dismissive, even if I have shown a deficiency. So I keep an eye on iron, B12, folate etc myself 🙄 You just prick a finger and post it off, I use Thriva but there's a few companies that offer them.

HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 21:17

I think I will have a look into the home tests. Its possible they could prove useful.

OP posts:
HarryPotterFan436 · 25/07/2019 22:26

Ok I've ordered a home B12 test so it will be interesting to see what the outcome of that is.
