I moved to a lovely area around 4 years ago, my garden other then a little road backs on to a beer garden.

The pub when I moved in was a “locals only” pub really - garden never used and at most 20 people in there on a weekend.

Since I’ve moved in it’s been renovated and is now a “trendy” pub - not a problem - however at weekends they have music blaring all day until closing and now the summers her all week...

If I’m in my garden I cannot hear my partner...

The question is AIBU to complain?

My partner keeps saying he pub was here before us...but we cannot even sit in the garden when we get home because the music and bass is too loud?

I would talk to the pub landlord to try to get it resolved. I believe it’s irrelevant in law as to whether the pub was there before you moved in or not - they shouldn’t be creating such a din that you can’t hear what someone else is saying in your garden, in my opinion.

BackforGood · 24/07/2019 23:01

I would try talking to the pub landlord too.
tbh, I like a pub garden, but would avoid one like the plague if it had loud music blaring out - that isn't what a pub garden is IMO.

Might help if you were able to speak to your neighbours first, and garner their opinions.

I'm afraid I'm no legal expert but we had similar with the pub on the corner and we managed to get the council to put serious limitations on the music.

Our argument was that the pub had been there for over a century but the music was new and that's what we were complaining about. We got it sorted without too much ill feeling.

I think you need to speak to your neighbours and possibly to your local councillor.

Thanks for your replies, I know other neighbours have complained and didn’t want to be that person(it seems busy so don’t want to ruin people’s fun!) but as I say it’s getting louder and I’d rather nip it in the bud now.
We love where we live and don’t really want this souring what we have.

What kind of response did the neighbours get? Absolutely complain and then go for some kind of group action.

msmith501 · 25/07/2019 05:48

Our local had to cut back on music and also the volume of the music in very similar circumstances. Yes, the pub is the oldest in the village and has been around for way longer than the neatest houses but that's not the point. Irrespective, people are allowed to enjoy a reasonable quality of life and that includes sitting in their garden being able to hear each other. The household in question contacted environmental health who set up decibel meters and a few recorders and a couple of weeks later, the pub had to comply or die. Sounds drastic but the landlord could equally have been more neighbourly and considered those around him. On a personal note, I think noise is fast becoming one of the biggest pollutants of personal space and sanity.

bellabasset · 25/07/2019 05:53

I think you need to get together with your neighbours and make a joint complaint. Music all day is unreasonable, not something I would want to listen to either in a pub garden.

TheSerenDipitY · 25/07/2019 08:52

was the pub there when you viewed the house prior to buying?
cause if it was then tough shit, dont buy a house next to a pub/racetrack/music venue/airport if you want quiet

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 25/07/2019 10:11

It always helps to read the OP, TheSerenDipitY. She's not objecting to the pub. She's objecting to the noise, which is a recent phenomenon.

I and other posters have been able to set limits to the volume of pub music. The council will do this if the noise is considered unreasonable.

LawnsLT · 25/07/2019 16:39

The neighbours are more annoyed about it then we are!
The pub used to be a run down, badly run shack..we heard it was getting turned into a Tesco express so was happy when we got told it was staying as a pub...
Maybe not so much now, thanks for all your replies - I’ve told the elderly guys next door I’ll speak to the pub and then environmental heath if nothing changes.
